I got a new BMW S1000R
« on: November 05, 2015, 06:53:36 PM »
I am 67 years old and my very world wise 24 year old daughter informed me that I had purchased a "very age inappropriate motorcycle" I told her to go suck eggs. That little 500 pound bike puts 160 HP right to the asphalt. You can rock the throttle to the firewall from a dead stop and it won't pull a wheelie or spin a tire (in the right ride mode - it has four modes). I have never ridden a motorcycle that is accurate as that BMW. I don't know a better way to describe it than accurate. It goes exactly where you point it. That BMW makes me feel like a genius! I am a LONG way from being even an adequate rider but the S1000R seems to just KNOW what you want it to do. I put the tallest wind screen on it that I could find (I really am not a naked bike rider). It doesn't go but about 130 miles on a tank so it really is not a touring bike. It has a very comfortable seat and the riding position treats my rickety old backbone with some kindness.

I really do love fast bikes. I also have a 2008 ZX14 (my smart ass daughter didn't say a WORD about the 14!!). I have a little "play" bike - a Ninja 650R and, of course a Concours. Four bikes is plenty and it's all my garage AND my wife will accept. I ride the BMW (it really in not a true BMW - it's kinda loud and the whole sport bike concept sorta pisses off REAL BMW owners) on day rides. It is wonderful on western Oregon twisty back roads. That's it. My new bike  -  I love it!

Congratulations on an outstanding purchase!

I occasionally get the "age appropriate" comment from coworkers.  Started when I hit 40 and continues to this day (solidly in my 50 now); I guess they think sport bikes are only for the young and when you hit 40 you should be on a cruiser.   Tried the cruiser thing, I have nothing against them but they just doesn't work for me.
Current 2 wheel rides:
2014 Councours 14, 2003 ZRX1200r, 2001 ZRX1200r, 1994 KLR 650, 1985 Eliminator 900 (will sell in the spring)

Now I'm jealous. Jealous of your new rocket ship and jealous that you can ride it for more than 5 minutes before getting a neck ache. I'm a few years younger than you and folding my self onto a full on sport bike like that is uncomfortable after a few minutes. Anyway, congrats and enjoy!

I believe he got the S1000R ... not the S1000RR. Higher bars. Possibly lower pegs?

... not the S1000RR ... Ouch:

I really should have posted a picture. This is the bike the very hour (the day after Christmas last year. The rear fender is now gone and a fender eliminater installed, the rear foot pegs off (my wife: "Who the hell has a butt that small!!!???") and the taller wind screen. I took my magnetic tank bag with me to carry all the docs and owners manuals etc. Plastic tank.

That S1000R is a kick-butt lookin' bike

Now let's see newer pics with that windscreen ... and the fender gone.

So you're kind of a badass. COOL! I have 4 bikes and I can't find enough time to ride them all! Frustrating really.
