how many co2's cart. for a flat?
« on: May 27, 2011, 12:00:33 PM »
Decided not to take my pump on the trip to calif. sun. How co2 cartridges would be good to carry for a flat. I won't be able to get them til I hit calif. but would be nice to know. I already have plugs as well as the fiber strips? that I like . I just don't want to carry more than necessary, thanks

I would like to know that as well. I carry four 16 gram ones. I figure that should be good for at least one flat.

Don't know, but if it's something like 4 to fill the back tire, I'd rather have a mini 12-volt pump. Takes up no more space and no worries about running outta C02.

Maybe you just need a smaller compressor?

I would think something like this : http://www.slime.com/product/111/Power-Sport-Tire-Inflator-%28%2340001%29.html?utm_source=Slime.com&utm_medium=PDF&utm_term=Power%2BSport&utm_campaign=Compressor%2BComparison would take up less room than the CO2 cylinders.  Plus, you can use it more than once (or even twice if you're careful).

I've seen these at Wally World, and a few other big box retailers, for not much more than a box of the CO2 cartridges.

Just a thought.

I have that slime pump and have used it. The difference is that it could take 10 minutes or so to get a tire full. The 4 co2 carts are about the size of a cigarette pack (a shade bigger) but will fill a tire in seconds. Nice option on the side of a highway in the rain.

I think they are good for about 10 psi each in a rear tire.

Be sure and wear your gloves when you screw those things on.

I wasted the first one I ever used because I was bare handed.

They get really cold, really fast, and I dropped it.

BS
if the seal was broken during a repair.
go out and empty 4 into a completly flat tire. and ride it.

2 cartridges won't inflate my puny mountain bike tire, let along doubling that, and expecting it to fill a tire 6 times the size/volume.

giving information like this without doing it is BS.
you won't be able to ride a bike anywheres with 4  cartridges .
get a Campbell-Hausfield 12v pump from wall mart.
3 minutes total to fill a tire to 40 psi.

The Slime Powersport Pump is on sale at Northern Tool for $24.99 and shipping is free if you have it sent to a store near you. I also had a $5 off coupon.

My CH from Wallmart sure won't fill my back tire 3 minutes.  I just came in from deflating my tire and re-airing it up.  Took 7 mins, 46 seconds.

How many watt- seconds of energy did the pump use in that amount of time?  ;D

Really though, thanks for testing that and posting the results. Is the pump you used the same as the flat Slime type? The Slime pump seems OK but the fitting that goes on the tire stem is so tight and cranky that it seems removing it loses about 1/2 of the air volume you just pumped into it.

I've got one of the Wally World CH pumps, it's worked great for years, just take the screws out of the plastic case, remove the pump, discard the case, I keep mine in a stuff sack.

I have to disagree.

I ran over a fence staple in New Mexico,

repaired two punctures with the stop and go mushroom heads everyone hates,

wasted my first cylinder (see above)

and got 30 psi in the rear with the last three in the kit.

Maybe there are different charged cylinders?
I was using the stop n go ones.

Those Slime pumps call for a 20 amp power source. I wired mine to my Gerbings plug-in. 8)
