Cool story! #0007 must be one of the original models. I wonder if they upgraded it to an H model because I thought thats all they were flying these days. I was at the University of Arizona in the 70's and in AFROTC. We could sign up to ride in the back of AF helicopter training flights at Davis Monthan. Flying over the bone yard was interesting. All manner of aircraft including lots of BUFF's even then. My favorite was seeing some B-58's. It was before they created the Pima Air Museum and we got to see from the air lots of cool airplanes from the 50's and 60's. Although no B-36's, I always looked for one but I guess they never had them in that bone yard.

B/RB-36s were processed immediately for the metal.  The only thing they may have kept were the Wasp Major 4360 radial engines and J47 turbojets as some parts may have been interchangeable with other aircraft of that time.  My dad's aircraft was one of the last ones processed in FY59 by the Bone Yard.

It must be an H model. Tail # 61-1007 means it was out of the contract for H models in 61 IIRC. The story says it was delivered new in 62, which further proves it being an H model.

Oh I only saw 0007 thinking this was the 7th airframe built. That makes more sense.

The AF only has H models in the active inventory.  0007 was an H when it was built.  0001-0040 were all H's.  There has been talk of a J model but that hasn't amounted to anything as yet that I know of.

I would have used that term but I've heard that used to describe Gold Wing riders and y'all have WAY more class than that. :)

If I would have seen it leave the Bone Yard I think I would have cried for joy.  It's not often the inmates get to leave...in one piece.

In doing some research on 0007, I found the list of '52s that were lost over Vietnam...  None were H's, the majority were D's, tall tails.  One from the 99th brought a tear as that was from Westover, Dad's last CONUS assignment as he was First Sergeant for the 99th OMS, our last SAC assignment.  From then on he was TAC.
