rear swingarm bearing maint
« on: January 29, 2012, 04:28:04 PM »
Tony or the other veteran pros, or novices like me HA,  I read in the manual about servicing the swing arm bearings doesnt look to be hard to do. My only question is what tool can we use as a suitable sub for holding the inner colllar to be able to undue the lock bolt in the shaft that you remove to get to the bearings.  Also do you need to have new bearing seals or if your careful can you reuse the exsisting ones. Also should you pull one side at a time simply bracing up the swing arm with a jack.  Just looking for maybe a little tutorial from somebodywhos done it.  Any particulars I need to know about appreciate it.  Thx Steve

From my notes when I did this. It's the kind of thing you do once, 'cause there's not much grease in there from Ma Kawasaki. Haven't touched it since.

Misty rain today in Ottawa - time to grease the swing arm bearings.

Pretty much followed the manual, made a small press to pull out the swing arm shafts consisting of a circular metal plate about 2" in diameter, a 6 mm bolt 40 mm long and a 6 mm nut.

Back out the 3 retaining bolts about 1/8", turn in the 6 mm bolt until it bottoms, push the plate against the bolt heads. Tighten the 6 mm nut and the shaft pulls out 'til it hits the bolt heads. For the left side, see http://www.ncf.ca/~ag136/swingArmPress.jpg

Once it's moved a bit, you don't need this press any longer, you can remove the retaining bolts and just pull on the 6 mm bolt. For the right side, you need 3 longer bolts, 8 mm x 45 mm to replace the existing retaining bolts.

There was a posting here awhile back on an easier way to accomplish basically the same thing without removing the swingarrm, I think Leo posted it, I got a hard copy somewhere. Anybody remember this? I know, I know, its not really THE way to do it just like using a suction tube to replace the fork oil instead of removing the forks.
