Wouldn't you know, the first day I have her back together...
« on: January 16, 2017, 11:48:31 AM »
For those of you who haven't seen my build log post, I've been modernizing a ZG1000 for a little bit. I've meant to post more on it and it should have been finished, but she got damaged.

I got her running, and holding fluids, so I had to go get her hot and make sure there were no leaks at temperature. Typical motor repair practice right? I rode her for about 100 miles, checking every 10-15 minutes for signs of coolant or oil. Not a drop, I'm thrilled! I take her to Wal-Mart to pick up some more truck bed liner to finish up her lower fairings. Well, on the way out, I'm stopped at a stop sign in the parking lot waiting for traffic, and this lady turns into me. She hits my left leg, pushing it up against the clutch slave breaking the skin (no broken bones). Needless to say, the bike falls to the right. Right side front peg bracket is totally busted ($50). Right side mirror has some superficial scratches on the housing (they're not standard concours mirrors $~25). Clutch cover has a single scratch, but that's okay because I'll be replacing the clutch and painting the cover later on. Just looking at the fairings, you can't tell it was laid over. I'm super impressed with the truck bed liner.

Needless to say, I was pretty p***ed off. I went off on the lady for being on her phone, and griped about how hard it is to find used parts for these aging bikes. After about a minute of being an adrenaline infused meat sack of frustration, I thought to myself I'm glad we're both okay, the bike still runs and isn't leaking, and the damage is actually pretty insignificant. I cut her a deal, and she pulled cash from an atm to replace all the damaged parts, and a bit for my injured leg.

So I'm looking forward to getting these new adjustable foot pegs, and seeing how hard it will be to make them fit. I've got an excuse to paint my mirrors now too.

Final thoughts: Don't use your d**n cell phone while driving, even in a parking lot. Truck bed lining is awesome. This bike is ridiculously heavy to pick up by yourself.

Glad to hear you are ok. Even those parking lot prangs can be serious

@ gPink: She was pretty scared of me until I took my helmet and face shield off. The bike was upright before then.

@ Hooligan: Thanks man. You're absolutely right, parking lots are where most motorcycle spills happen.

I really think cell phones are as bad as drunk driving. Certainly think texting while driving is worse than DUI. But glad your ok. Will it leave a scar? If so, at least you got that going for you  ;D

The scab looked kind of like a radioactive symbol, I honestly think it would have made a badass scar. The scab has been coming off, and it doesn't look noticeable anymore. I'm so white scars don't show barely though.
