I was having a hard time getting an accurate way to measure the front preload until I tried using an old stick type tire pressure gauge. If you have any question refer to the manual (page 225 I believe) and the drawing of what to measure. I extend the stick holding pressure on it with my index finger and place it against the barrel that has the lines on it. The stick contacts the top of the bolt at the base. I move the stick gauge down until it rests against the top of the adjusting bolt. I hold pressure on the stick with my finger untal away from the bike and place it against a MM scale ruler. Easy peasy!
