Where do you keep your passive FOB?
« on: April 04, 2017, 04:14:11 PM »
I only have one Fob and a passive one. I am thinking of securing the passive one on the bike somewhere. Any suggestions? Thinking under the panel on the tank.

I only have one Fob and a passive one.

So you have two Fobs... a [large] passive [only] fob and a [small] active [actually dual active/passive] fob.  This is the standard inclusion with the 2nd Gen C14.  The first gen came with two active and no passive.

I do personally do not recommend keeping any fob (which is also the key to the bike) on the bike itself, for obvious security reasons.  But if you were to keep one on the bike, the passive one is what you would want to use.  Hide it well, and make sure it is as least a few inches from the ignition lock and obviously not in a locked area :)

I keep my active fob in an inner zippered pocket of my riding jacket.   This means I never have to look for or take out a key, because I never ride without my jacket (of course).  Losing my huge riding jacket is extremely improbable.  I then keep the passive at home as the emergency spare.

If you have a spare key, highly recommended, then you have more options.  How about under the seat in the toolbox?  I have two passive FOBs and will only take one of them with me when I'm on an extended trip.  I always leave the 2nd one at home as an emergency backup.  But when I have the passive FOB with me, I usually keep it in one of the zippered pockets in my jacket.

Under the seat is a locked area.... so if you lose your fob, how will you unlock the seat to get to the spare fob/key?

If you put it in your jacket, secure your jacket. Some scumbag took mine off my bike in Johnson City TN. That jacket also had the keys to my travel trailer in the pocket. Bastid...

If you put it under the seat, have a generic key made for your normal keyring that is likely in your pants pocket to unlock the seat (and gas tank and bags). That'll lock up your fob and make it convenient to unlock the rest. I have a generic key and a Givi key on a ring in my left jacket sleeve.

I own an 08

I have 2 active fobs, with keys,
one lives in the pocket of my Stich, for use when fueling up, I use that Key... also for the side bags... stove knob lives in it's happy place, and is NOT ever removed.

the other one lives in my pants pocket, when riding.

a fob at home isn't an option, when you are 500 miles from home.

I also replace both fob's batteries when I find one that gives a warning...  because I always carry both, at all times.. so if one ain't working, I know the other one ain't far from the same...

Very true.  Most of the time when I am riding, I have the jacket with me when I get off the bike.  If not, the "store it in the jacket and forget it" concept doesn't work well.  If I have room in a pannier, I will lock it there and use a spare regular plain-old-metal key I made.  If not, I will lock the jacket through the zipper pulls to the extra helmet locks AND REMOVE THE FOB and put it in my pants or fanny pack or whatever I have with me.

Ok, yeah, I have a spare metal key for exactly that purpose too!

Not a bad practice, but you can always use the active fob as a passive device if the active fob battery fails, so that isn't too much concern.

Certainly no bike has more key drama than the C14, since it has so many options and possibilities :)  (See how I turned a negative into a positive?)

strange you mention that, where were you when you left your jacket unattended???
I make a point of removing everything from my Stich that is "stealable" and stuff it in a small fanny pack when I leave my stich on the bike... and I only leave it on the bike when in sight, at a COG function...( because everyone knows better, and doesn't want to test this old man's "punch Powah" (which excedes the Mad Powah of KiPass by 3000x)... 8)
If I leave my Stich on the bike anywheres else, I run a very stout Master Cable lock thru the sleeves, and leg on the stich, and over the seat and thru the rear rim on the bike, for secure storage... if they want to cut the stich apart to steal it, i guess i get a new one...

I also keep the keys for my rear trunk, and my locking Garmin mount, and even my trailer locks, attached to both fobs, which are never left to someones pilfering hands.

I missed your meaning originally... thought you meant the key was the spare fob.  As I posted earlier, I, too, keep a spare metal key on my normal ring for the bike.  So that would be an option.  A good option too, since getting a metal key cut is pretty easy and cheap (and I do highly recommend it).

I still do NOT understand all the drama of the FOB. I have had one on every car since '90. Never had any problems with losing one. I have an '09 with two active FOBS.  I used a zip tie like MOB to secure my keys to it, and that's it. I don' t carry a spare. I don't use a lanyard to secure it to my person. It stays at home with my spare car keys. Do you carry a spare FOB for your car? If you loose the car FOB its cheaper to replace but you're still SOL if far from home. Why is it so different on a motorbike? It's the same as a car with a FOB except it's a keyed lock for the gas tank. Just asking not trying to start any trouble...

The reason people worry about their fobs is because of wild animals.

Not all that long ago, humans were very at- risk of being attacked and killed by large carnivores. So we started hanging around perpetual fires, hid in caves and eventually built buildings strong enough to keep those pesky critters away from us. Today it is very rare to hear about a mastodon or saber- tooth tiger attacking anyone but we really have not evolved any appreciable amount since it was a real problem, so the fear lives on. But now we transfer that fear to other things such as: what if the toilet clogs (horror!)? Is my microwave really reducing my sperm count? And, of course, what if I lose my fob (shiver me timbers). The sad truth is that people have a fixed amount of worry and fewer things to expend it on so.... we waste it on relatively silly things. Mostly KiPass I think (remember, NEVER, EVER tease a saber- tooth tiger or take the key out of the ignition on a C-14).

I don't worry about it much, myself, but it is a very expensive/complex mistake to lose both!

I keep the passive fob stored under the seat.  Extra metal keys can be fabricated cheaply at a locksmith, and I have several of these.  One stays on my keyring, another is hidden on the bike, and on longer trips, I give a third one to a fellow rider.  If my fob is misplaced or doesn't work, the metal key unlocks the seat and I can pull out the passive fob.

I keep my passive fob tucked right in my bra. They are the handiest things for storing items. Spare money, house key, fobs, cell phones, and sometimes even some left over food. That comes in especially handy on the long days on the road when hunger sets in!   ;D

Well, I think this thread has been trumped. There is only one place more impressive than that that one could store 'things' in and I seriously doubt anyone who does this would admit it in a public forum.

Years ago, we had a puppy that absolutely loved my mother. My mother always brought the dog Milkbones whenever she visited and of course the dog went nuts trying to find them (in her pocket? in her jacket pocket?). One day in the summer, she was not wearing anything but a blouse and slacks, and nothing had any pockets. So the Milkbones went in her bra. She sad down on the couch and the pup was all of 5 seconds finding them and retreving them..... to the utter amazement of all the other guests at the party.....
