Title: Concours - GTR 1400 Fender Extender
Post by: Blue One on May 12, 2011, 11:47:16 AM
Still the  best looking and most effective fender extender you can buy for your Concours - GTR. Very OEM in appearance.

I designed  these and mold them using 1/8" thick ABS plastic.  The color as you can see is black and they have a textured surface that goes well with the rest of the bikes black trim.

The purpose of the fender extender is to protect your radiator from  damage and also protect the lower bodywork as well as the area where the pipes and oil filter are.

The Stock fender is ABS plastic, so installation involves removing the fender and gluing the extender in place using ABS glue.  No screws or rivets needed for a clean look.

The extender will stay in place and do it's job.  Installation instructions are included.

The price is $45 US which includes mailing to your address.  There are now hundreds of these in service all over the world.

Send me a private message or an e-mail and you can order using paypal.

Overseas shipping can be arranged.

I also do a rear fender extender for the Concours.

The price is $60 US   Installation involves removing the rear fender and riveting the extender in place as the rear fender is polypropylene and you can't glue to it.

After riviting a small bead of black RTV on the inside seam seals it nicely.

The rear extender helps a great deal in keeping the back of the bike clean and drier in the rain.

I would defenitely be interested in a rear tire hugger.

I decided not to do a rear hugger as they (huggers) actually do very little in the functionality department.  They may look cool, but only direct things in a different direction and don't actually solve a problem.

My rear fender extender on the other hand has proven to be effective.

Still have plenty of front fender extenders molded and ready to go.  A quick PM and a payment to paypal is all it takes to get one.  :)

I have to say this is probably the best extender out there.  It hangs much lower than those offered by others and I also want to say that it's wider as well.  Only a few minutes to install and it looks great.

I got my new fender extender from Larry and after reading all I could about removing the front fender, I got all of the tools and some silicone spray out in preparation for what was likely going to be a difficult task.

After realizing the worst that could happen would be that I would break a brake line clip, I grabbed the needle nose pliers and I sprayed some silicone spray on the clip. I then grabbed the circular part of the clip that the brake line goes through at the 3:00 position and gave a pull. The clip popped right out. Then the left side slipped right out. It was not a big deal and nothing was damaged. Thanks to all for their words of advice.

It seems Home Depot and the local hardware stores only carry a glue that works with ABS, PVC, and CPVC. I hope it works. I sanded and scored the mating parts and they are now clamped together. Hope to ride tomorrow.  :D

If you have any problems getting the glue to stick you can also go to an auto parts store and buy some of that 3M  body tape.  It works just as good and less messy.

Thanks, but it is glued and clamped already. Discrete mechanical fasteners might be a last resort. I'm guessing there is no getting it off now  ::)

I bought mine from Murph and just used the cement.  It ain't coming off.  Did the same thing with my C10...it never came off either.  If it's glued correctly it won't come off.

Too bad it (Murphs extender) is only about 1/2 the extender mine is in both  appearance and function  :)

You are correct in the statement that once they (ABS plastic fender extenders) are glued on using the proper glue that they are not coming off. No mechanical fastening required.

ABS glue bonds using a solvent cement type bond which is a chemical bond where the solvent slightly melts the plastic and joins it almost like welding.

That's why it is important to use the proper glue. Any other type of glue will not give the proper bond and it could fall off at any time.

As long as the glue you used is rated or specified as being good for ABS plastic (among others) then you will be fine. No mechanical screws ,rivets etc needed.

The problems come when ABS plastic is NOT mentioned  on the list of a bonding agents (glues) uses. Just seeing "May be used on plastics" is NOT good enough.

I don't usually run anything in way of a sale. I make these in my garage and get pretty busy around this time. I do have stock on hand if you want to order one up.

Besides my normal price is way way cheaper than a new radiator  ;)

If you have any problems getting the glue to stick you can also go to an auto parts store and buy some of that 3M  body tape.  It works just as good and less messy.

I have commented on the other posts regarding installation of my fender extenders however somehow I missed this one.

What I have to say about this is ABSOLUTELY NOT.  :)  I don't know if I can be any clearer. DO NOT attempt to install my fender extenders in this fashion using trim tape.

It sticks well but will not last and be effective  over the long term. The extender will fall off and be gone if you try this.

Gluing with proper ABS glue is the only way to go as per my instructions.

And again, no screws or rivets needed on the front fender extenders.

Larry.

Yes, still available, I'll send you a PM.  Front is usually $45 and rear $60.  Both sent in one box is $95. Includes cost of mailing the package. (price increase on the package deal reflects an increase in the cost of shipping)

I would have to disagree that the huggers don't do anything...the rear spinning tire acts like a big air pump and pushes air forward and hinders the flow of hot air off the rear of the engine, so adding a hugger actually improves the flow of hot air and keeps the engine a few degrees cooler.

The subject of this thread is not huggers and I will disagree with you there. What you have said would be true if the rear of the engine was open to and exposed to the rear tire, which it is not.

Given that the rear tire spinning will have little effect on cooling.

My rear fender extender also has nothing to do with cooling rather it aids in keeping the road spray down and helps keep the back of the bike cleaner.

Iirc, it can be installed without removing the oem, if you use a dremel to drill the holes. I was going to install one but decided to fab one on my own because I did my trailer hitch, whick makes a perfect frame for my home made version. I do like the way his looks tho, just make sure you use fasteners that allow removal on the road, in case you have to pull the wheel off away from the homefront.

Didn't think about tire removal.  Guess it is time to get a lift with the rear wheel door.  I don't pull the wheel on the road.  If I can't plug it, it gets towed.

Good to hear.
I hear you on why the bikes aren't built with real fenders. It's just a styling thing, but it is beyond me that the factory designers and engineers can't see that the radiator will be vulnerable to road damage when the bottom 2 inches of it is exposed to a spinning tire as the front fender is so short.

Then the rear fender is just a pathetic little triangle of plastic that does nothing to keep the rear of the bike (or a passenger) clean.

But, it's all good for me as I have the solution in a nice OEM appearing package.  :)

Hello
Looking for some help as to why this fender extender is rubbing my tire. I have already cut it down twice, it is now less than a quarter of original size  and is still rubbing. It "looks" to be installed according to instructions and pictures. I believe the bike is bone stock- forks at top of clamps.. tires are 120/70 mich PR3.. any advise on what to do..

I will add that it was bought a couple years ago and been sitting on a shelf waiting to be installed. But it does not looked warped- though installing it was no picnic as it did not line up perfectly.

PS. while im a nuub on forums, i am a somewhat experienced mechanic ( mostly auto)

any positive input appreciated.

Seems like my response wasn't really needed.  So with that in mind I removed it.

Improper installation will cause a number of problems, rubbing is one of them.

so, as we had no info as to remedied... was it in fact installed incorrectly?

I believe so. That's the only possible explanation.
I posted my previous response and asked for clear close up pictures of the installation and got nothing.

The guy asking has basically disappeared and given no further follow up.

In my past experience installation screw ups are the only cause for any issues.

I installed both fender extenders a month ago. I finally "had the chance" to ride in some decent rain yesterday on the way home, 10+ miles in the rain. The front one works like all front extenders thou it is longer than others so has more protection. As far as I know Larry's rear extender is the only one out there. Previously after riding in the rain the back of the bike was covered in dirty crap thrown up by the tire, especially the top case and its lock. With the rear extender the back of the bike was wet, of course, but very little evidence of dirt and other road crap on the back. It didn't look any worse than the rest of the bike's upper parts. I'm extremely happy with its performance.

Excellent product, Larry! Thanks!

Leo

Thanks Leo, good to hear it's working out great for you.
Yes, my rear fender extender is the only one available and they do work well.

Ride safe.
Larry.
