Title: Gold wheels...
Post by: ZG on April 26, 2013, 05:30:51 PM
Has anyone ever anodized a set of wheels??

I picked up another set of wheels off ebay and would like to have them done in the same gold color as my Ohlins forks.  8)

I talked to my powder coater and he said that would be a hard color to match with powder coat..  :(

I talked to my painter and they said that would be a hard color to match with paint...  :(

It seems like my next option is to have them anodized gold...  :-\

I want to change this color...

I was going to have some pieces for a luggage system I made anodized; never got around to it, although I have connections through work.  I know there is something called "hard" anodizing that is supposed to be more durable.  The colour selection was impressive; you should be able to almost perfectly match the anodizing on the ohlins.  Sounds expensive...but it would probably look great.
Good luck!

I think I'm gonna go meet with these guys next week to discuss, they are local to me and from their website it looks like they do some pretty cool custom anodizing so I'd think they could probably handle it, not sure about the cost though...  :-\

You could always send them to Ohlins.  They could retool the factory to accomodate your wheels and you would get an exact match.  Nothing that money can't buy. ;D

A candy paint should be able to come fairly close to that IMO.  A fine silver base with a gold candy would give the depth and vibrance the forks have.

To this color...

I can't imagine why  ::)

Anodizing is a fairly simple process. Prep the base metal to the finish you want, then have it anodized :) The process is basically an electrolytic acid dip, followed by a dip in a dye. Final result can be most any color of the rainbow. Hard Anodize is a different animal, but the process is similar. And a clear anodize (not like you want this) is a 'clear' dye. Raw anodize is VERY receptive to colorings... even a blue non permanent marker (ask me how I know this)

Since it's not a coating, like paint or powder coating, prep of the base metal is quite important. Any defects will show in the final product.

May be a stretch, but alodine *may* work. The final product is a spiffy golden patina, but the patina depends on the aluminum composition (2024, 6061, etc.), and it may not be that durable if subjected to physical abuse (road crap).

Alodine is readily available at most auto-body jobbers. Can be applied with no major investment in equipment (cotton swabs or a dip tank), but it's poisonous. It's a chromium (or cadmium?) solution. Rubber gloves mandatory (it'll stain your skin a most golden yellow). If you pour it down the drain, do so from Gumby's  house.

So I went out to a local anodizing shop today and discussed with them some options...

We looked at some of the gold samples they'd done and found one pretty close, what do ya'll think??  :-\

I also dropped the wheels off today at another shop to be soda-blasted. The anodize shop said all the paint needed to be removed prior to anodizing and that soda blasting would be the best option to not affect the texture. So after a quick search I found a guy in town that does it, $150 and he should be done on Wednesday so that I can pick them back up and get em over to the anodize shop...

Why is it that nothing is ever easy with my ideas...  :-\

I've been thinking of trying that just to see what they'd look like AZ, but the vision for these wheels is for the matte black bodywork.  ;) 8)

I think it is just too much work to be swapping wheels and plastic. You seem to have the ebay search feature down pat so I say you start looking for a bike with wrecked plastic and just have 2 of them.  :)

That is a great ide!!  He could get his suspension done by racetech, anodize the tubes the same flat black as the bike will be, get the DLC coating on the shafts, same for the rear with a black spring.  Do the full on turbo and keep the bike as sleek as possible.

Well, the anodizing path is a fail...  :(

Luckily they ran a sample of a "cast" aluminum part (which is what the wheels are) before doing my wheels, it turned out more of a crap brown than gold with a very dull finish...  :'(

Back to the drawing board...

So I went to the plating shop that did the black nickel plating on my upper triple clamp and asked them about options that would work for a gold color. They said I could do them in real gold... (yes I was intrigued) but the cost was gonna be about $1200, so I opted not to go that route.

The other option they mentioned is doing them in an electroless nickel and then a yellow zinc plate.

Hmmmm... Ok, let's try it! The cost will only be about $150 for the set, it will be more like the gold of the inner fork tube of my Ohlins forks, a little more "blingy" than I was originally thinking but I'm gonna give it a shot. It wont damage the wheels and I could always paint or powder coat over top of it, so I thought why not!

Here's an example of some parts they had there with the yellow zinc to give you a feel for the color.

Wish me luck, round 2!  ;D

I just picked the wheels up from the plating shop...  :)

This color is just wow IMO!  8)

Due to the process for plating the electroless nickel and then the yellow zinc over top of that it has a total pearl effect to it, as you walk around them or the light or sun hits them at different angles they show signs/hints of blue, green, red, etc...

Well I think I'm probably the only one that's done this, so at least it's unique eh.  ;)

What do you guys think?

I picked em up from the plating shop and dropped them off at my painter, they're gonna hit em with clear coat, so they should hold up well hopefully...  :-\

But then again I am cutting new trail on this, so I guess I'll just find out at some point, but I'm hopeful it works and lasts cause I really like the color...  :-\

Make sure your painter COMPLETELY covers every inch of surface with that clearcoat... at least 2x...
I just tuned into this saga and could have warned you about the anodizing of castings...or the bad news about trying it...(btdt).. :'(

As for the nickle/zinc chrmate conversion thing, have a lot of experience with it also, lots of the stuff I design in industry gets that finish.

The problem is tho, most of that stuff never sees water, or elements that your rims will see...acids picked up on wet roads caused by car emissions, and other things similar.
The aluminum in this state now is very much like a battery, with the coatings, and any moisture will set the galvanic action in process...

I've always liked that color shift and look, but when it's applied to polished metal it's more dramatic.
 8)

be very careful mounting tires now, if that coating and the paint finish is compromized/nicked; any damaged area will begin to decompose..turning into a fuzzy powder....and pitting.

shoulda went powdercoat... there are many compositions, and I've seen some that do mimic your Ohlins, they just take 3 layers...siler base + candy gold clear + clear topcoat.
http://www.tiger-coatings.us/index.php?id=1295&tx_pressdownload_pi2%5BshowUid% (http://www.tiger-coatings.us/index.php?id=1295&tx_pressdownload_pi2%5BshowUid%)

they are called "dormant" coatings, and they even have flip/flop chemeleon stuff now...

my current coaters use this:
http://www.tiger-coatings.us/index.php?id=1295 (http://www.tiger-coatings.us/index.php?id=1295)

this, with a clear/gold top coat might do it....and the powder is reletivly cheap, could do those rims with less than 2 lbs...

Those suggestions from MoB just gave me the idea off having the rims of my black C14 liquid power coated in Kawasaki green. That should look amazing... just not with Öhlins suspension. Those look amazing by themselves.

it really is not "liquid powder coating", it's all dry electrostatic deposited, then baked to melt on and cure
That is the name the company chose, I suppose it was because their stuff looks like "liquid" uber shiney stuff they do.... 8)

Is powder coat resistant to brake fluid?   :-\

Could make future caliper rebuilds expensive.

ZG, your projects have me doing mock ups with green painter's tape.  ::)

On a black 09 it doesn't take much tape, roughly applied, to start looking squidly.  :D

That's the advantage of the multiple sets of bodywork and wheels, I don't need to stop riding her while I play with options, when they're all done the only down time is install.  :)

As for shows, haven't thought too much about it, I would like to see it in some more magazines though, just don't know how to go about that and who to contact...   :-\

Just buy rags relevant to your bike, look up the masthead for all the contacts, flick them a short email with two pictures and see what happens.

Jay.... I want the black/green!  I went to the ebay link but since it is not in English, can you help me out? How did you specify the color and is the auction for a pair?

I just messaged them through ebay in English and they replied back in English confirming they had the gold in stock, then when I paid with paypal I added in the notes section I wanted gold. Transit wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, took about 10 days to deliver from the day I ordered.  :)

Yes, the auction is for one pair. FWIW I just did the minimum bid and then somebody outbid so I let it go, then when the auction ended I got a 2nd chance op from the seller and hit buy it now, maybe that's just how they role...  :-\
