F1 error after replacing cam sensor O Ring
« on: January 20, 2018, 11:53:08 AM »
Today I replaced the cam sensor o ring (bought an oversized o ring from Murph.  Afterwards I tried to start the bike and it would not start and I got an F1 error on the dash.  Any ideas of what I should do next?  Seemed pretty simple so I can't imagine what could have gone wrong.  The new ring made it harder to push the sensor in but it went in.

Bike ran fine before the replacement o ring was installed.

FYI:  I did not disconnect the battery or any connectors.

thanks for your thoughts.

First step is retrieve the error code:
Self-Diagnosis
•Push and turn the key knob to ON. •Push the upper button [A] and lower button for more
than two seconds. •The service code [C] is displayed on the LCD by the number
of two digits.
○When pushing and holding the upper button while the
warning massage and warning symbol are displayed alternately
on the LCD, the display on the LCD is shifted to
the previous display with the warning indicator light (LED)
goes on.
○After switching to the previous display, the service code
can not be displayed even if pushing the upper button and
lower button for more than two seconds

"23 - CamshaftPositionSensor -Camshaft position sensor cannot send the signal to the ECU during crankings."

Either the sensor wire is not properly reconnected or broken, the sensor is not properly seated or the sensor got damaged.

Good luck, hope it is an easy fix and not a damaged sensor..

I uninstalled the sensor and put the old o ring on just to see.  Checking it over and same issue.
Wires look fine as well.

I guess I will need to buy a new sensor because that must the the problem.  Hopefully the connector comes with the new sensor and I can trace where it plugs in.

Thanks for the help.

Is there no diagnostic procedure in the FSM for the sensor?

messing with the sensor, you probably created a compromised connection in that wire where the plug is.. unplug it and replug it back in a couple times, and reinstall the sensor, with the new O-ring...( a can't fathom why you would think putting the old o-ring back in, would have any curing effect..)

This happened to me when I did the same procedure last year, along with checking the valves while I was in there.  If my memory serves me correct, but I have a terrible memory, I traced it down to having to do with my PC V.  Do you happen to have one?  I wish I could remember better, but I think I ended up bypassing it by connecting that big plug back to the way it was stock.  It then fired up.  I then hooked it back up with the PC V and it worked.  So I may have not had a good connection when I put everything back together.  Maybe you can disconnect that and give it a shot?

Thanks for your responses.  I will give those suggestions a shot tomorrow and hopefully get it resolved.  I will also read over that thread link (thanks Man of Blues).

I put the old O-ring back on just to eliminate the possibility of it not seating correctly.  Stupid idea most likely but it only took a second to try it.

This morning I removed the battery and sanded down all the leads and also where the ground connects to the bike.  Then I removed the sensor and replaced the ring with the larger one.

I then unplugged the Cam Sensor connection to the bike and then plugged it in again.

No luck. Same error.  I tried unplugging the sensor and plugged it in several times to no avail.

I am not certain I understand how to do what klb1122 did.  I don't have a spare PC V or anything like that.

I guess my next step is to try a new sensor and see if that does the trick.

I think he was referring to the tendency o a PCV to have a bad ground.

Sorry for the confusion.  I was just saying to bypass the PC V, so basically put it back to stock.  When I did that, it fired up.  So then I figured it had something to do with the PC V, and as lather said above, it was the way I had the PC V grounded.  Once I hooked the PC V back up with a solid ground, I was back in business.

Ok, thanks.

My replacement sensor from EBay showed up today when I got back from lunch.  I installed it and now it works.

Paid $35 bucks shipped and it came off a 09 with less than 1k miles.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
