Title: Starting Over
Post by: Sea Level on May 11, 2011, 01:05:58 PM
Wow, I don't know what happened or how much work will be involved to regain all that lost content, but let me be the first to sympathize and encourage the resurrection!

Umm, I know this is a poor question to ask at such a hectic time, but...

No offline backups?

This is just sad....  I really hope we can get all the knowledge back that was contained within the previous life.  There was a lot of information contained therein.

Rick, hopefully you're able to recover the data

Rick,

Thanks for all of the effort you have put into giving us an incredible forum. It has been invaluable to so many Connie owners.

It was a major crash, as far as crashes go. A partition on the server RAID simplistically went poof. Yes, I do have a database backup locally, and weekly database backups on the server. Guess what partition they were on?

The database is dynamic, updated at every new post, page view, profile update, ... Files (like avatars and attachements) are static, and can be 'old'. The database 'links' them together. I had a dream last night... It became apparent I couldn't recreate the forum 'as it was'. Not without a lot of down time. Even then I felt it'd be a crap shoot.

I do have most [all] of Elvin't FAQ/Wiki content though.

Yes, I'm bummed too. But there's good members here, info will be recreated.

Rick

Anybody notice it's  zggtr.org now?

Rick, we are all with you in sprit as you rebuild.  Thanks for your efforts!

Upside is that I seem to be be getting more done at work in the last few days ;D

Good luck resurrecting what you can (if anything) from the old forum.

We have a pretty good Guru on another Kaw site that's an IT type, want to touch bases with him?
I'm just offering some help, not doubting your capability's in any way.
He did a great job migrating servers for us and even resurrected the old photo files that had been lost to the ether.
Lemme know,I'll keep tabbed...

Wow. Just read your last post while pre-viewing mine.
Anyway. Offer still stands.

By my last post before the crash, I had spent 4 days/12 hours learning a bunch of stuff about my 2009 Connie (the faster red one). I debated if I wanted to re-register and burn another few days of my life on the forum but the people and the posts brought me back :D Sorry that you had such a catastrophic crash. Astrobob

Rick, keep up the good work, this stuff happens!

I've only been a Connie owner and forum member for less than 2 weeks yet already this site has steered me in the right directions for what tires and windshield to buy - probably saving me hundreds in purchases I wouldn't be happy with.

I'm a newbie to these forums and a new C14 owner, but I work in IT and truly sympathize on the server crash. Even with backups, when databases are involved and message forums are involved, it's very complicated to even attempt any sort of restoration.

On the bight side and as a true newbie here, I'll actually be able to read everything that's been posted here so far!  :)

I MIGHT make that board by invite only. (I still need to play with the new features of this forum software)

What is "WYSIWYG editor" in the profile settings? Is that a new feature or I just didn't see that listed before as an option to enable or not??
I kinda think it's new? I think it's a glorified "quick reply" box at the end of every thread. Instead of a 'blank' box, you get the full WYSIWYG interface for posting.
I like that with this new version I can even see all the pics in the thread on my blackberry! Is that a new feature or was I just an idiot before...  :-\
Perhaps it's a better version of the old forum software. Dunnow  :-\

I am just devastated by the loss of the forums.  I had only been using it for several months and a member for much less than that, but had it not been for the forums, I would never have purchased my Concours.

I spent hundreds of hours reading thousands of posts, composing new ones, and replying to others- hoping to learn as much as possible, while sharing what I learned with others.  I was in the middle of tons of research for things to do... lots of bookmarks... lots of followed threads.

I am praying that the information can be restored... the loss to the Concours community is incalculable.  Meanwhile, I won't be posting much here, hoping that this is all just temporary.

I will share the new pic I just took of my bike, since I had to select a new Avatar, anyway:

Not to be a smart ass, but isn't the point of a RAID system is to have redundant data on multiple drives?  I think that to start from scratch is an unbelieveable task.  Is this a COG curse?

Rick, your task is immense, good luck!

No.  A RAID offers *zero* protection from OS errors, application errors, user errors, controller failures, or total system destruction.  It only offers protection from single (and sometimes dual) hard drive failures.  It is not a form of backup of any kind.  Backups must always be on separate physical media, minimally... and ideally on removable, off-site storage.  (Yes, you can probably tell I am a 22+ year I.T. On the prior forum it would leave a thread title bolded until I went into it, which helped me keep track of what I've looked at vs not. Is this a setting in my profile I need to do for in the new forum, all threads look the same wether I've viewed them or not??

Not all is entirely lost.

You can still use google search to search the old forum:

In a google box, type "site:forum.concours.org {search key}"

For example, to find posts about kipass:

site:forum.concours.org kipass

You can also use the "Show search tools" in the left margin to limit the date range.

This is not an ideal solution, but at least gives access to some of the old content... at least until google purges it.

My solution does work.. Sort of.  Once you've found the link, look for the cache button.  This will show the entire page that google had cached.

Here's the first link that showed up in Rick's search for coil sticks.

To see the next page, you copy the link to clipboard, then use cache:{paste} in a google box.

Again.. It's far from ideal, but at least gives a clumsy way of accessing old data.

I've already said it, but I'll say it again, thank you Rick!

I'm curious though, who pays ($) for the hardware etc to support this site??

I'm very active on gixxer.com as well but they have a membership fee, it's not alot of $ but at least with the many members it covers some expense's I guess like this...

How does that work on this forum and who has to pull the $ to rebuild the servers etc??

I'm sure many on here would be more than willing to pay a yearly or lifetime membership fee, it's a a great forum IMO and worth it...

I've only been a Connie owner for about three weeks and, based on how many times I checked to see if the forum was back up, I must be totally hooked on this forum. A fantastic resource! Based on all the great folks here, I'm sure it won't be long before there's a lot of useful info.

Yer talking to him.

It's a barter arraignment. I offer IT (Internet end, not really desktop support) services in exchange for the feed. The server (2U, two slot, w/ one dual core (I need to upgrade to 2 quad cores)) is at a financial institution. They also have a couple other financial domains hosted on the server 'for free'. Been doing so for 10 some odd years at the current host. Hardware costs are always a challenge, but it gets taken care of.

This may explain the spartan look to the forum(s), lo graphics, no large file storage. If I had more resources (see CPU upgrade above, and most importantly additional bandwidth), I might install more crap. Like a real photo album. For now, everyone appears happy, and it remains free (my choice). The members and Mods make this what it is, I only provide the sand box... and it is limited.

My solution does work.. Sort of.  ...

I've local copies of most of Elvin and VAJim's "most excellent" FAQ/Wiki posts (I clicked "save as" to my local machine). When I have time I'll re-upload. For now...

Well thank you Rick!

I'm sure if it was a $25 anual fee and a $50 lifetime fee the majority of us would pay it without thinking twice, I would at least...

Thanks for the support! (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/thumbsup.gif)

All you other knuckheads out there please chime in on this membership fee topic, am I the only one that loves this forum and thinks Rick shouldn't have to pay it out of his own pocket...  :o

Well, whatcha going to do.. First, thanks to Rick for the great forum that was, and will be again! Out with the old, giving us all a new beginning.
Contributions are going to be plentiful, to say the least! Hell, I just read through seven pages that were written in half a day before I could reply!
Now to check out the newer site..

I'd pay $50, ...

Why?

How about if I, or any of my buds on the forum, show up on your door step (OK, yer old man's door step ;) ), you find a spot for us to pitch a tent? Could that be the 'price of admission'? For that matter, If I (or anybody on the forum) asks for a couple of bux for whatever reason, can ya oblige them if'n ya can? Like say the ever popular OtP gig! Par-tay at Ricks place when Bernd (Germany) arrives, and Gie (Belgium) leaves, during their OtP adventure. BBQ, some tater salad, maybe a couple of beers... And yes, I WILL be passing the hat.

Deal? Goes around, comes around.

I have gotten attached to this site. Is the site funded in any way? My point is can I (we) help in the expense to get things back in order...paypal, etc.? You I'm sure have mega time invested in the last few days not to mention previously. Thanks and let us know if we can help,

was it a failure to hold the K-Pass FOB close enough to the 2u server?

Best wishes on your recovery,

I've gotten a *lot* of value out of this forum over the last two years.  Hell, it was mostly why I chose a Connie.

I'd gladly volunteer to donate some cash to the admins, no worries.  But I'd plead against making it members only.  I never joined COG (shame on me) because I didn't see what I was getting in return.  I'm of the camp to give it all away, and then we'll all take care of it.

Wow!  Noob again!   :)

Rick,
I actually have printouts of some of the old threads; a lot of mechanical stuff from when I was first learning about my new ZG1000.  I might be able to help duplicate some stuff that has been lost.  I didn't have a computer in the garage and it kept me from having to schlepp back and forth.

On the subject of voluntary donations or whatever, this being a free forum is one of the reasons I'm here and always will be.

Living OTP, the only threads I ever read are those on the C-10. I ain't got no interest in rides, rallies or whatever but.................

The free info I've gleaned over the past few years must amount to $100's saved from going to a garage at $100 an hour over here. So yes, I would make a voluntary, unspecified amount to the forum. I don't want to be told you've got pay $?? to join but I would show my apprecation.

How about Paypal to Rick?
Title: Re: Starting Over
Post by: maxtog on May 12, 2011, 04:58:13 PM
I would suggest Rick just put up a PayPal "Donations" button somewhere and let people donate if they want to/choose to.   Simple, fast, easy.

I would also love to donate to an effort to get all the old content back in...

... How about Paypal to Rick?

Wots this "Paypal" you speak of?  ::)

How about one or two of you make a modest donation to stopforumspam.com? Their 'stop spam' plugin for the forum saves all of us from a bunch of crap, and makes the mod and admin jobs a relative walk in the park. Mention zggtr.com in a comment field if you like.

Appreciate if you post you intentions. I'd hate to tap everyone, I may have other worthy causes to suggest down the road ;)
