Title: How much paint?
Post by: jim_de_hunter on May 15, 2011, 07:05:10 PM
How much paint do I need to repaint the Blue Monster a new color?  Is a pint enough or do I need a quart?

I would think that quart would be needed but I'm not a painter.

You'll need less than a quart, and more than a pint, @ ready to spray consistency. I did all panels 'cept belly, main fairing twice. And main fairing again a year later. Still have a few dregs in the bottom of the can. DuPont Chroma, SATA Mini Jet 4 HVLP gun.

Primer or primer/filler is another story, don't forget clear.

SATA Mini Jet 4 HVLP gun.

I've not used a gravity fed gun yet.  Is it any different than a cup gun?

Both puke a bit of paint when you paint upside down  ;)

The good HVLP guns are a dream to work with, 105% of the paint goes on the part, not in the air then onto the floor (you hair, shoes, fingers, ...). The better ones (Sata and Binks are but two) are a bit pricey though (opinion).

You can use up all the paint in the cup, no waste. Unless you mix up WAY more than you need ;) Cleaning is a breeze, 1oz of solvent, slosh, spray, dump, repeat twice. Wipe down. They don't sit flat on your bench though, you need a hook of some type to hang it on while filling and during flash times.

The Mini-Jet I mentioned is a panel / touch up gun. Only has a ~4oz cup, but works for all I do.
