Nebraska COG - "Over the Pond" Grill Out
« on: July 17, 2011, 11:04:05 PM »
Nebraska COG’s “Over the Pond” Grill Out

Date:  August 1st, 2011
Time:  6:00-9:00PM

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska - Chris's Place

“OTP Winners” - Bernd Neumann of Germany
“OTP Tag-a-Long” - Gie Lambeir of Belgium

Here is your chance to hangout with Bernd and Gie, swap motorcycle stories, and enjoy some good food before they start their trip to the COG National Rally in Snow Mountain, Vermont.

If you can attend the BBQ respond to this post, so we can plan for food. Please bring a drink of your choice, maybe two or three.  Also bring some cash as we will pass the hat for contributions to help pay for gas and food for the guys on their 5,000+ mile trip around the USA.

The “Over the Pond”  (OTP) is an event sponsored by COG members to help send other COG members from Europe or US to travel over the pond.   Every odd year, a European rider comes to the U.S. and every even year a U.S. rider travels to Europe.  The “OTP” got its start in 2000 and has been going strong every since.

Please RSVP.  A post on this topic is adequate.

Do you need to be an official current COG member to attend?  If not, I think that may work for me.

Hi Rick, hope to see you there.  Two years ago or so 3 of us met up with 2 of you guys in Ft. Collins and rode the Mtns.

You don't have to be a member of anything for OtP. Always been that way.

I80 is boring but quicker but if you have a little extra time do the 2 laners.  I'd probably stay on the south side of 80.  Watch for State Patrol, esp between Ogallala and Lincoln (virtually all of I80).

Hwy 34 in Nebraska or something like that.  Of course it depends on the starting point.

Kansas has Hwy 36 so if coming from Denver stay on 36 then cut NE to Alma Nebr, then go east, etc.

Don't know what road construction is happening down that way but could check that too if interested.

Current plan is US-36 in KS, then diagonal up to Alma and Holdredge. (huh, just like you propose ;) ) US-34 till the traffic starts to suk, with I-80 as the detour. US-34 (& 6) seems to jam up at/near Hastings for some odd reason.

I recall the speed on the secondaries is 65MPH, not much time lost compared to the interstates. No truck traffic, not much traffic for that matter, prettier ride too.

Cool.

Minden has Pioneer Village.  Many relics from the past.

Hastings, east of there on 6, has the Old WWII ammunition depot with earth covered bomb storage buildings and a lot of concrete buildings.  (oh, btw, they patrol 6 pretty good within about 20 miles of Hastings.

If you want to skip those, you can go east at Alma.   North at Franklin.   East on #4.   North on 15.

Then go by Dorchester and thru Crete.  About 6 miles east of crete you can take a left and go thru Denton.

From Denton, you probably will want to take W Denton Road east to Lincoln.

I am full of ideas, of course I'm not logging the miles like you guys.

I may be able to meet you in Crete if you want.  Maybe somewhere further west of there too.

Chris is near 40th and Neb Hwy. So if we kept on US-36 til US-81 (or NE 15), Crete is doable. Howz dat work out?

Keep in mind I'm serving breakfast in the AM of our departure, dishes and crap will have to be done before we depart CO. Too may sight seeing visits will put us late into Lincoln. And the A/C unit, and cool showers, and... ;)

Bernd will have my toss-away cell. It's frequently off, and you can't leave VM.

Rick,

Now, don't be to late!  We will need to go to Lazlo's Brewery for dinner that night and try their brew sampling menu along with some good food for Bernd and Gie.  You might remember the Lazlo's Brewery we took Patrick "OTP" there in 2007!

One place you might want to make a quick stop for Bernd's sake.

1. Atlanta, Nebraska on the east-side of town, just before Holdrege, is a WWII prisoner of war camp, for German POW's over 3000 stayed there during its time.  There is a historical marker, and all that is left is the chimney and water tower.

If you guys have time, it's only a thought for the backroads.  Look at google maps and you'll see the options pretty plain.

81 is 4 lane for the most part.  Nice road though.

You could always do breakfast the John Wayne way - throw some bacon on a biscuit and head out.  Ha.

Alma to Lincoln using the fastest way is about 3 hours.  It is 180 miles.    You can decide from there how much time you have.

Do I remember ?  Sure do!

It's 9+ hours at 'brisk' speeds via two lane, 8 hours via I-76/70 at posted.
Unsure when we'll depart, will press for 'early'.
You remember when Patrick and I arrived? We had a four hour head start from my place though (St. Francis), but dawdled a lot getting to Lincoln.

You guys are gonna have a good time with them, Bernd is a really funny chap (don't try to match his beer drinking during happy hour !!) , Gie is very knowledgeable about the C10 and where to ride in Europe.
The US lucky winner for the 2012 "over the pond" rally in Europe will be in for a treat, as it will take place in the beautiful Dolomite mountains in Italy.
