I don't know who is a Lee Child fan but his Jack Reacher novels are great. The main characters name is Jack Reacher (duh). One reason that gives me pause on this is the following stats:

Name: Jack Reacher (no middle name)
Born: October 29th
Measurements: 6’5″, 220-250 lbs., 50″ chest
Hair: Dirty-blond
Eyes: Ice blue
Clothing: 3XLT coat, 95 cm. pants’ inseam
What he doesn’t have: A driver’s license, Federal benefits (doesn’t want them), tax returns (doesn’t do them; he hasn’t filed taxes since he left the Army).

Me thinks that the diminutive Tom Cruise comes up short (literally) on all the stats. I think he is supposed to be about 5'7". Don't get me wrong, I like Cruise, but this does not seem to be the right part for him. A common theme throughout the novels has this great big guy scaring people and bouncing heads because of his size. One person that I think could have played this role is Ray Stephenson. He is a big guy and he played the starring role in the second Punisher movie.

Pretty sure Ron Perlman could do that role, as he's not exactly a small guy, and seems to fit the 'knocking heads together' bit pretty well.

OMG no!

Tom Cruise has the face but not the build of a Jack Reacher. Reacher's character is more physically imposing without saying anything. Reacher's literally has an arm reach that has disabled opponents with one blow.

Having listened to Lee Child audiobooks while riding and reading paperbooks when not, I appreciate Reacher's loner character.

However, he is written as a physically imposing character. Cruise ain't that tall.

Going to be interesting which story gets picked; 61 Hours, One Shot, Tripwire, or something else.

Since I read all of the John Carter of Mars books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, I have yet to see how that movie compares. I understand three stories were combined and the graphics are good.

Similarly, I wonder how any movie project will treat Child's books.

Good Lord, Tiny Tom as Reacher?
Maybe someone like Hugh Jackman,Daniel Craig(he may be a bit short though) or Ben Roberts-Smith but certainly not Tom Cruise.

One interview I read Tom Cruise said that he had talked with Lee Child and he approved it. He said that If Child had not approved it then he wouldn't have done it because he too is familiar with the character.

Well, I suppose if the did some Lord Of The Rings height magic, maybe. The question is (if you went the CGI route to make Tom look bulker/taller), could Tom pull off the mannerisms that go with being a big brute?

Agreed, Tom C. ain't no Jack, not in body, nor face, nor voice.

Good example of why people say the book was better than the movie.

If it really must be a pretty boy actor then maybe Chris Hemsworth. Ray Stephenson would be better.

NO, NO ,NO. As far as Child agreeing, $$$$$$$$$. All I can say is, think of how they messed up Cussler's Dirk Pitt by having that ninny Mathew McConneghy(sp) star. Oh well, look how many Batman there have been, maybe next movie will be another guy.

Lee Child is a brilliant writer. I've read all the Reacher novels several times. I had been anxiously waiting, and dreading, the day they would finally make a movie. I just knew something like this would happen. Hollywood always screws up the movie version. Like was said before, its all about the $$$. And Cruise is a huge draw. From what I've read, Reacher isn't even going to be portrayed as a former MP major, just an "investigator" of some sort. Most of the cast has been announced already. There are some fairly big things missing. I have not decided if I am going to watch the movie or not,.

Dude is smart, (masters degree in chemical eng) certainly looks tough and has a suitably impressive physique.
