Payson ride with Silly Sportbike riders
« on: December 02, 2013, 10:48:08 AM »
So I was gonna take a ride up to Payson from Phoenix and saw that a few of the Sportbike guys were headed that way as well...  So I mentioned that I would tag along with them if they didn't mind...  The guy on the 600 GSXR laughs and says sure but we don't look at the scenery so you might be better off riding by yourself.  Then the big guy (always gotta be a "big" guy on a Busa) says we don't wait up for no one...   I said sounds good to me, if I wanted to see the scenery I would drive my car.  So we take off about 6 of us...  and once we get out of town into the twisties I start to let the Concours do what it does best on high speed sweepers.  I have ridding this route so many times and it is my favorite stretch of road suited perfectly for the Concours.  Next thing you know I am pulling away from the group through the turns and on the straights the only one even close to capable to catching me is on the Busa but by the time he starts to reel me in we are hitting another sweeper so I lay the bike over and throttle threw it pulling away from Busa man...  The whole time little to my knowledge they are being showered with rocks from the sticky rear Michelin PR3 on my bike especially since I have a fender eliminator on it.  I get up to Payson and gas up then sit down and kick back with a bottle of water.  They pull in and the first thing they do is surround my bike looking it up and down...  The one guy swears I have a turbo hidden under the body work...  The Busa man says damn you can ride that thing!!  I had trouble hanging with you through those turns... Then his girl who was far behind on her GSXR 600 says but babe you surely could have blew past him on the straights if you wanted to... He looks at her shaking his head and says yea I thought so to but never could this damn Concours is a beast and he was hauling ass on that thing giving all of us a meteor shower of rocks the entire way.   Hahaha...  Young guns found a new found respect for the Concours :)

Hahaha, I love it. I always say, it isn't how fast the bike or car will go, but who has the balls to ride it. Skill and the willingness to use what the bike has to offer has more to do with it than the bike, generally speaking. The C14 is very capable as you demonstrated.

I love that area. I haven't been there for a long time though. I performed at the casino in Payson for the Millennium Eve celebration. I drove up from Phoenix and wished I had a bike instead of the rental car.

Years ago when I had my Wing I pulled up to a stop light w/ a Busa next to me... tshirt, tennis shoes (untied), shorts... at least he was wearing a helmet.

Light turns green... Busa winds up and goes, shoe laces straight back... stops at next light... I pull up next to him again... this goes on for a few miles until it goes one lane... then I follow for a mile or two till we turn on to the twisty road.  8)  After one sweeper, I pass... last I saw of Mr. Go Straight Fast...  ::)

I've seen Goldwings whip 1000cc sport bikes in the twisties.  It's way more about skill than pure power.

Nice story, thanks for sharing. The C14 is no Busa, but it was built from a Busa killer. 8)

I did open the one of the bag's and pull out a bottle of water for all of them as I had a case of water I had bought for the house and forgot to take it out...  It was pretty funny to see the looks on there faces :)
