Tar Snakes! Which state has the worst ones?
« on: September 05, 2016, 11:04:06 AM »
This poll is about the quality (lack there of, or slipperiness if you will) of the tar snakes not the quantity. I think Texas has a lot of tar snakes but I just can't remember slipping on one..ever. It seems that they must wipe or squeegee them so there is minimal tar outside of the crack. Utah on the other hand gets my vote, they seem bad when ever I visit the state and temps are in the 80s or higher. Some of them look like the guys making them got paid more if theirs were higher than all the others.
Apologies if I misspelled your state, I tried to find a way to cut and paste the list but I gave up and just typed them all.
Please feel free to also post a particular road in the state you select as an example of what you think are pretty bad tar snakes. In my case for Utah (although I've seen bad ones everywhere I've visited in that state) Scenic Utah Hwy 211 between Hwy 191 and Canyonlands N.P., it was in the 90s and I was down to 25mph and I still thought I was going to lose the front wheel out from under me.

Indiana has some slippery ass snakes. Not only do you get snakes with no sand or texture but you get massive volume per square foot of road. Ridiculous.

Once you get past that you inevitably turn on to a road that has been freshly done with chip seal. Kryptonite for bikes.

From our paper yesterday

"Moyer told the commissioners on Tuesday the funds, along with the local match, will pay for 33 projects, including two bridge projects and 37 miles of road, most of which will be resurfaced in the chip-and-seal process. Moyer said the road improvements alone will account for about $1.3 million."  http://www.thestarpress.com/story/news/local/2016/09/06/county-begin-work-new-road-funds/89908846/    Not real sure why they call it a road improvement
