ZG1000 starter clutch in GPZ 900R?
« on: December 31, 2016, 09:22:09 AM »
Hello everyone,
I'm rebuilding my GPZ 900R A1 engine right now and was looking to replace that awful original starter clutch that gives head aches to almost every 900R rider (it uses the old design with springs and rollers to engage).
Now the guy from whom I've ordered parts has sold me a ZG1000 starter clutch instead of a ZZR1100 (which is supposedly the best choice).
Is the first gen starter clutch from Concours a good one? I'm fitting it to avoid any future problems with it..

ZG1000 1st gen clutch  (which I'm getting). It has a different boss plate and gear:

ZG1000 later starter clutch (same as the ZZR1100)

Should I sell that one I'm getting and try to get the ZZR1100 one or is the Concours one just as good?

Thank you for your help :)

I am not sure muchhelp this is but I had an 86 and a 01 C10. Had no issues with starter clutchs or starters.

Thanks, but do you know if starter clutches are common to go out on these bikes? As on a 900R it is quite common.

I've never compared gen 1 and gen 2 ZG starter clutches, but will say if you have a 900, I would be thinking a gen 1 ZG would be the choice, as those engines internally were the same, I would be hesitent about attempting an install without having both in front of me... especially attempting an 1100 to fit in.
