How do I properly dispose of new battery acid?
« on: August 11, 2012, 11:19:05 AM »
I just got a new battery and after filling it up I have extra acid. It says in the manual to properly dispose of it by NOT doing certain things, but nothing on how to properly dispose of it the correct way. I'm not going to wait for my city to have a hazardous materials day next June. Its about 6 oz. Other than dumping a load of baking soda into it I am at a loss. Any ideas?

Make a batch of meth? On a serious note the solution to pollution is dilution. Have you looked at what's in a bottle of drain cleaner?

Just run the water in the sink and slowly pour the acid into the drain. Wearing rubber gloves and safety goggles is not a bad idea.

Check your local dump/recycling facility.  There's a good chance they have a moderate-hazard household waste disposal place where you can drop it off for free.

Get rid of it? That's crazy, save it. You never know when you might need it. (That’s the hoarder in me talking, just ignore him)

You could carry it around in your back jeans pocket but make sure it doesn't leak.......don't ask me how I know.

fill a 5 gallon bucket with water, and pour the acid into it.....

NEVER pour water INTO acid......(just saying....it's a chemistry thing we all learned in school, the hard way....)

then if you want dump a box of baking soda in the bucket, stick the hose in, and let it run till the reaction stops.... the result will be simple salt water.
