  • It's only really cold if you fall down in it.
    • C-14 farkles you almost cannot ride without.
So I am going to try it again on the way home- a Coast to Coast in 50 hours between Ocean Shores, WA and Rye, NY, starting Monday morning (25 June 2012). Several changes made to the bike while on the west coast in order to make the timed run going back a little bit slicker- added a temporary aux. fuel cell (there is an entire story in itself right there but not for this post), highway pegs, and a new helmet- Nolan N103 (the old helmet had a leaking visor, as well as a badly fogging visor). Of course I should not have made any of these major changes just before a long trip so if it proves to be a mistake it is all on me.

The route will start in Tacoma, WA and end in RI but the timed portion of the ride will be between Ocean Shores, WA and Rye, NY. This is the planned route:

As usual I will have SPOT with me and on but this time I will send an 'yellow flag' each time I get fuel. That should make it easy for everyone to follow the timing; normal marks on the route will be orange and uploaded about every twenty minutes or so. The yellow colored marks will indicate fueling stops, and if I abandon the trip I will leave a green "OK" mark to let everyone know that I am fine but have abandoned the timed run. Bear in mind that I have increased fuel capacity of the bike (hopefully... sigh) so I <should> be able to go something like 300 miles between fuel stops. This is the link for the SpotWalla link to follow my progress:

As it stands I'll be there to see ya off for sure, we'll see how far I'll go, Spokane is scratched for sure.  I'll do a work up on the aux tank in another thread, but lets just throw a teaser out there, it's a mini epic undertaking to say the least.  Me thinks we should hook up a pyromoter to the spot ;D

Good luck.

Hope the new Nolan doesn't prove too tight and squeeze your brains out through your ears and nose. My last new helmet gave me headaches I would thought could ony be associated with a cerebral hemorrage. ???

I will be following you on spotwalla.

Funny you mention that- I wore the Nolan for a time today and it squeezed my head enough to cause my jaw to hurt. I guess the Nolan won't be making the trip east, at least not on my head :-(  Back to HJC for me.... they fit like I was the model for the size and shape. I am currently using a SY- MAX II so if the III holds the same sizing, it should fit me very well.

Brian

Good luck.

Enjoy the trip and thank god for Michelins. I like my HJC FS-15 carbon very much. Fits like a glove and light weight.

Just about packed and loaded, and after I get my gear I will be headed west to Ocean Shores. I am meeting Chet there so maybe he will upload a photo or two- perhaps a photo of me telling the 'cat joke' to the Pacific. :-)  Then probably a quick, light lunch, stock up on water and fuel and point east. I should be back in two days or so.

Just found this thread.  Good luck to ya Brian!

I wish the weather had been a little better up that way, and my work schedule a little less demanding.  I wanted to ride up north to see your project.

I figured you must be getting a late start, since I just checked the Spot page, and it says you haven't left yet.

Chet, keep him out of that horrible traffic up there, so he doesn't spend the first 10 hours just getting to the snow on Snoqualmie Pass.   :)

Maybe with enough escort riders, he'll make it this time.  Anymore volunteers out there, to pick up where Chet has to turn back?

Yep, using a late start here so I do not get to the coast in NY during rush hour Wed. I am crossing the Hudson well north of the city but that area still gets pretty congested- if I leave Ocean Shores around 12:00 or a bit later, I should arrive in NY after rush hour has passed.

Chet already saved my bacon by having me check Snoqualmie for blasting which I was unaware of. There IS blasting this morning but it ends at 9:00 and I won't be there until the afternoon so I should be fine. Assuming they don't have an oopsie and blast a hole in the middle of the road of course :-)

Thanks for the well wishes and I should be back on the forum in a couple of days.

SPOT's been activated and he's making his way to the west coast! AT Ocean Shores (I think) he'll get his pacific water,  hang with Chet for a moment (hopefully get some pics!), then get his timed receipt.... I'll talk to him next after he's gotten that and is back on the road heading east.....I'll keep you all posted!
