My 2012 only came with the keyfob, and my dumba** managed to lose it. I have researched this subject extensively and buying a new ECU and keyfob is not an option right now. (might be an option if i get a tax refund in 2019).
Any other cheaper options that i might have missed? (Ebay used ecu's do not come with the keyfob)
-
Here is a used one for sale. http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=23622.0 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=23622.0)

Thanks for the heads up. My research shows my 2012 requires 2010 thru 2014 ECM.
-
I have a used/repaired KIPASS ECU with 2 full function FOB's from my '08. The ECU was damaged by a rather epic electrical malfunction (that I caused). The ECU was repaired but I have not been able to install and test it because my KDS is an old version. (Still looking for the most recent version by the way...)
Anyway, long story short, if an '08 KIPASS ECU will not work with your model year perhaps someone out there has a need for it.

You are correct.
The bike comes with two fobs, one active, one passive. If you lose them both, you are toast and have no option but to replace the ECU, and it must be the correct one. Lots of $$$.

Tree, When you say your KDS is an old version, what do you mean exactly - the software?

don't think that's gonna help him..
you need a KEY CODE from an active or passive FOB.. to fire the bike to recieve info, and operate KDS 3.0
OR you need a NEW FOB, which comes with a CODE NUMBER on it's enclosed paper to input into the KDS under a manual install of a NEW fob... but, reading the book, it's seeming like an existing linked FOB is still needed...
he needs an active FOB, and an ECU, which is prior matched. along with a NEW (with code paperwork) FOB.
IIRC, current KDS is 3.0, revision 1, but may have been updated recently.. sorry, I can't help on that end.

I just bought Ver 3.1.4 - latest available, p/n 57001-1802 for the CD.

Tree, When you say your KDS is an old version, what do you mean exactly - the software?
My KDS software versions have an old database. My new KIPASS ECU cannot be read by KDS so I can't test the original one. Worst case scenario is that the repaired ECU is a P.O.S. and I am stuck with a bike that I have to trailer to the dealer. That's basically what's up. I need a newer version of KDS3 and I have run into a wall. I have purchased used tools in the past and it kinda pisses me off that Mama Kaw has a death grip on this one. Poor customer service if you ask me as far as the software is concerned - Dealers Only, what a bunch of crap.
p.s. I apologize for the crap.
-
:offtopic: still
What version of the software & database do you have? Just curious.

Why did your bike come with only one fob? Did you not do any research on the possible consequences of having only one working fob?
This has been discussed over and over in this forum.
-
My guess is that's all he got when he bought it - unless he doesn't recognise a credit card size immobiliser for what it is.
One doesn't need to research the consequence of losing the only fob/key/immobiliser/thingy one has does one?
He just hadn't got round to getting another yet, sadly for him - unless he has the c/card one somewhere.
Give him a break.

Guilty of not doing my research on lost keyfobs before buying a new to me motorcycle, I am.
Guilty of not knowing that a "credit card" should have come with the bike when i bought it from the H.D. dealer, I am
Guilty of not having had enough sense to have a back up keyfob made, I am.
Hopefully the above admission of guilt/stupidity has satisfied your needs. now, do provide positive input to this thread, if you have it.

My apologies if I appeared to be too harsh.
On a positive note. You have a great bike and once you've spent $1k or so for a new ECU w/fobs you will have a great bike once again.

If there should be any guilt to speak of, it should be on the head of the previous owner that had the callous disregard as to trade in a C14 at a HD dealer!!!.
Making that poor girl sit there with all that chrome and leather fringe. Shivers!
The most constructive thing I can offer is for you to get a good photo of a credit card passive fob and go back to the Harley dealer with it and see if they can find it. It could be sitting
in the sales manager's junk drawer with them having no idea what it is. If you offer a $100.00 reward, (yeah, I know you shouldn't have to, but...) you know they'll look for it.
I'd look all over the bike to see if perhaps the previous owner secretly hid the credit card fob on the bike somewhere, as some do that. I'd also ask the dealer if they'd contact the previous owner to see if he still has the credit card fob. If he says "No, I gave it to you with the bike" then maybe they'll redouble their efforts to find it.
If you can find the credit card fob, then you are getting off the hook considerably cheaper. I lost my active fob but I still had the passive credit card one and now I have an active FOB, a second passive fob, all programed in by the dealer for less than $350.00 total. If you find it, be sure to check back here to get advice about programming your replacements, as not all dealers know how to do it properly. I had to coach mine a bit.
Best wishes.

Thanks, i tried that as well. they are a Harley Davidson dealer, they buy bikes at auction (that is where mine came from) and they dont seem to be to interested in helping a "metric" bike owner.

Did you offer the $100 reward? Nothing motivates like a monetary incentive.
-
One possible way to help locate the previous owner may be to look up the warranty information on the Kawasaki web site. It should list the last registered warranty owner. If the bike was somewhat "local" before being auctioned you may be able to find him in the white pages. Might be a slim chance, but a chance none the less.
-
Thanks for the heads up. My research shows my 2012 requires 2010 thru 2014 ECM.
Yeah, I posted without looking at the year the ECM came from.

Somehow that doesn't surprise me at all.
-
Did you offer the $100 reward? Nothing motivates like a monetary incentive.
And if you [original poster] do, please use an accurate description of the passive fob- it is nothing like a credit card. It is much smaller and much, much thicker. (Can you tell, I hate the term?)
Also a good idea about the warranty registration; although both are probably a long-shot.
-
One can't be tooo careful with one's wording can one?
There, all us ones are working toward a good outcome for the unfortunate other one. :banana
-
One can't be tooo careful with one's wording can one?
Well since there doesn't appear to be anything else we can do to help, perhaps we can find a term that meets max' s sensibilities?
I'll start us off...it's larger than a thumb drive but smaller and thicker than a credit card.
..next?
-
Well, if 3 times the size and 7 times the thinness with a different aspect ratio and different materials is a suitably comparable item for a description, let's try the other direction- an item 1/3 the size and 7 times the thickness.... Hmmm... Let's call it a "double sugar cube fob"! :)
(My point is: if the objective is to describe, in words, a lost item to someone, like it was in this thread, comparing it something that it doesn't look like is going to hurt the chances of success, not help.)
-
The fobs pictured. The "passive" fob is 2 1/8" long, 1 1/8" wide & 1/4" thick.
-
Ah - the magic key-holder thingy.

Point taken, and agreed with. So let's see if we can do better.
Dot-less tournament domino sized passive fob? (not right, but a lot closer than a credit card, I'm still searching.)

Hey- that's a good one. A domino fob.

Tell me my friends, how long have you been obsessed with the size of your fobs?

-
Tell me my friends, how long have you been obsessed with the size of your fobs?
;D
Since we found out that size matters, however now we are just trying to give it an accurate descriptive name.
A name that my mother would have liked despite her fob envy problem, and one that would ensure the approval of my father,
but most of all...
....a name that will help max' become comfortable with his passive fob. ;)
-
I think Kawasaki should come up with some way to start the bike, with something small that could be placed on something, maybe like some sort of ring that could be placed in your pocket, then taken out of the pocket and put in some sort of receptacle on the bike. You could maybe turn the small thing, then hit the start button. It would be secure since you couldn't start the bike without it. I think Kawasaki could truly be a leader if they developed something like that.

"21 1/4 (Twenty-one & a quarter) passive fob", indicating its size but more importantly that it's old enough to drink legally. Probably helpful with this bunch. ;D 8)

Talking to them sounds like they can make a brand new keyfob work with my bike, keeping my fingers crossed. (waiting for more detailed explanation)
I've had this bike for about a year, i lost my keyfob somewhere between my first and second heart attack and becoming a full blown diabetic. because of my health taking a turn for the worse, i have only put about 200 miles on my Connie. She looks so good and shinny sitting in my garage :(

Good news. Fingers crossed they can get you back on the bike again. Hopefully the cost is reasonable. Glad I could help.

Must be the freaking season dude. Same thing happened to me, bought from a dealer, then bought by me, neither dealer nor PO know anything about the passive fab. I'm following your story, but from the same boat. Only difference is, my bike is 45 minutes away wheel locked and stuck in front of a strangers house, not in my garage.

Call a tow company and have them put it on a flatbed. Or get some buddies to load it into a pick-up. Don’t risk losing your ride permanently.

I wish it was that simple, but the site you linked, simply clones the info on the ECU, into another ECU... the key codes, and FOB codes are encrypted, so even tho they can program an ECU, you still have no FOB to match the clone...
unfortunatly...
and even then, you would need a FOB, to use the KDS3 serialization, to add additional fobs..

bummer
I have answered more FOB/Key?ECU questions in the last week, than in the last 10 years I've owned my C14... when it rains, it pours...
I answered your question to Tree, in his refurb ECU for sale thread, doesn't look like a match for you, I think he has a pre '10 model...
go there and read the link I posted.

Before I bought my bike I started reading the forums, so when I picked my bike up I bought an extra FOB because they were giving me a discount on everything I bought that day, I was really happy about that the day I washed and dried my FOB because I thought I was screwed but it still works, or the month that I thought I lost it. :banghead:
-
I thought I lost one of them for 4 years...finally turned up in the house.
-
I bought an 08 c14 and sold it a short time later because I could not find an upside to having a bike that uses this system.
What a nightmare solution to a problem no one ever has.
These are really nice bikes, I actually owned two of them (08/09) and may buy another if anyone figures out a way to just use the key.
Then I could ship the complete kipass system back to Kawasaki with Christmas cookies made with ex-lax.
So many horror stories!

oh my...
It's soooooo hard to explain, would I sell my house, trucks, everything I have, because they use a KEY I could loose at any time?
would I kill myself over a WALLET, which I could loose... at any time, and all the personal information, and charge cards, and such... down the tubes, and almost impossible to replace without having a Social Security card, which was contained in said wallet......
ohhhhhhhh the Horror........
ever loose a wallet???? OMG.... Now THAT, That truly sucks..

I can- mostly security and convenience. I don't have to go fishing for keys and it is harder to steal. But neither is so important so that I couldn't just pass on Kipass :) The security aspect would work fine with a chipped, passive RFID, metal key.
What a nightmare solution to a problem no one ever has.
Works almost the same way my current and previous car do...

That's essentially what I do. The fob is in my zippered jacket, always. Never have to think about it. I walk up to the bike, turn the stove knob and press start. Easy. It wouldn't affect my buying decision either way (if it had it or not).

Tons of upside, imo. I wouldn't buy another tourer without keyless-go. I love not fiddling with a key. Leave the FOB in my jacket pocket and that's it. My only wish is that the bags were better integrated, as I do have to pop the stovepipe key to get the bags open when I don't want to take my glove off to fish out the FOB. I'd consider a new Goldwing as my next bike and I like that they've integrated the bags, electronically, so they can be opened while the FOB is near, without using a key.
The only potential downside I can see is that you must junk the ECU if you lose ALL the paired keys (since an existing key is needed to pair new keys.). However, this also has an important upside -- it deters theft. At any rate, my C14 came with two active fobs, so I leave one at home as a backup.

Makes me think of losing my wallet in the 90's. An older lady at work told me that I should call my homeowners insurance guy and file a claim for my lost wallet. Never heard of that before. So I called and told them that I lost my wallet with $300 inside. They paid for my wallet, the money inside and paid the fees to get ID back. I was amazed that homeowners would pay for a lost wallet, but they did. So I have to wonder if they would pay for a lost fob (that flew off the bike, ie accident) and all associated costs. If homeowners wouldn't pay, maybe a full coverage bike policy. Full coverage policies cover things like being locked out. Well, he's locked out. I will ask my insurance guy soon. Hmmmmmm

So, you had one C14 and hated the fob system so much that you bought another? Or was it two more? It's not clear (to me) if you had two or three C14s?
Yep, such a terrible system. I've bought my '08 new in 5/09 and it's been flawless. I guess it's only a matter of time...
