Title: Runnin' a C14, X-country style
Post by: stevewfl on July 03, 2011, 08:59:14 PM
House sitter in place and to launch the trip I wanted to hurry and get out of the Southeast.  Also I never did the Iron Butt 1,000 miles in 24 hours thing.  So I did both. Day/Night one I rode 1100 miles from Tampa to Ft Smith, Arkansas only stopping for gas.  Took me 17 hours but thats 'cuz I did a lot of "off the freeway" stuff on my favorite back roads in GA and Northern Alabama.

OK, I haven't had time to take pics yet. But D*MN its hot up here! Real Phillip's 66 signs in OK, home of that company before they merged with Conoco-

Going to hit "Dodge City" Kansas on way to Rocky Mountains, Denver/Boulder and southern Utah. North Rim of Grand Canyon doing the tourist newB thing (I never been there!) Then seeing a special friend and rolling dice in Vegas...then all over Cali....  and Phoenix and Dallas for friends, Lousianna for cajun food, I hope to eat there for days...   Will check in soon hopefully with some decent pics.

Let me know when you're coming through the Phoenix area - I'll buy you a cold bevie! Just so you know though, it's HOT here too. Officially 118 yesterday, but my thermometer here at the house saw 120.0 for the high  :o. Be safe - there's a lot of kooks out there!

Yes sir, most of my day posts come from business trip airports, hotels, or during the occasional boring conference calls I sit on.  This rare "ride" is because I took vacation from the grind!

Right on!, and Ride ON!

I was thinking of doing something crazy like that this summer myself.  Even though my vacation time at work is maxed out, it's still tough to break away.  Glad to see someone out there 'livin the dream'.

If it gets too hot for you down south, it's now officially summer here in the PNW.  We're blue sky and sunny for the next few months (82F today), and rarely break 100F here in PDX.  Come on up and enjoy!  We'll show you around to all the good stuff.  8)

Thanks!

Made it to Vance AFB Oklahoma and visited my son and his girl.  Wow @ his Air Traffic Control center.

Then rolled across the plains of OK and Kansas, hung out in Dodge City, and made it all the way to Denver tonight! I think I'm psycho going 600 miles on VERY RURAL back roads in 108 degree heat, the locals advised against it unless I rode with someone. I went sometimes 50 miles without seeing a living human or even a cow.

This exactly what I saw all day.

I was so excited to see a tree and cows I had to stop and see if it was a hallucination.

The locals warned me not to step off the side of the road without snake boots and such. But I had to get a pic of this weird plant.

Fields of nothing, but hi-tech windmills cover power for Buffalo, Kansas. They are proud of their Bison but no one in that 400 people town could show me one.

Made new friends in Dodge City Kansas.  They explained Dorothy nor Toto is there, but Wyatt Earp is the town hero there. Everything is about him in that town too. I almost stopped at 300 miles and stayed at the Wyatt Erp Inn, but I went on to CO.

Ok now I'm in Denver, where I wanted to be!  Was tough getting here, a few thousand miles in a few days.  I'm going to criss-cross the Rockies a few times.  Meeting some forum friends that will take me to the highest spot. Hopefully I'll have an opportunity to take pics here that aren't sunblown out...  west OK and Ks was incredibly bright and hot!

Since I got into Denver in the wee hours of the morning after knocking off another 750 miles through 108 degree heat, I mentioned to Stavee I was going to relax a little today.  So he said "see you in a little" and I noticed on the ODO we went over 100 miles in the canyons and mountains (Denver area). Was so awesome him showing me those roads and I'm appreciative.

Tomorrow we'll get serious and go into Rockies starting with Rocky Mountain Nationa Park and climbing over 14,000 ft recomended by both Steve J. and Stavee. It'll start with riding to Rick's for the coffee.

Anyway, the pics do the canyons and mountains we rode today very little justice as the sun was so bright. Hopefully I'll have some real tripod pics tomorrow-

Zoomed down from a 10,000 ft mountain overlooking Coors brewing company in Golden, Co.  (Coors plant - middle of pic)

Buffulo Bill had a nice place on a mountain overlooking downtown Denver.  Went to his crib and his grave.

Be safe and ride hard, brother Steve!   If the Northshore area of New Orleans (I-10 thru Mandeville) is on your agenda, please look me up. I've got tools, spare Connie parts, and a great eye for local Cajun, Creole, or other local food joints.  Your lunch is on me !

All over the remainder of CO targets today. 490 miles one turn at a time.  Made it to Cortez and going to check out the map SteveJ marked up and at least hit some of that stuff in UTAH!

I did more riding than playing with the camera. Some spots it was advised to stop and take pics but the turns were too good!

Here are a few BS gas/pee stop type pics anyway.

Now you know why those of us out west don't post pics of everything we ride, too busy riding and enjoying it!

Keep up the great vacation stories.  As you can clearly see, it's the journey, not the destination.   ;)

No, it's not just you.  I'm still kicking myself for not stopping to take a picture of that road sign on Highway 12 in Idaho I saw, that said "Curves ahead, next 99 miles".  I was too busy thinking "Sweet, more twisties!"  However, taking that picture is now on my list of things to do, so I have an excuse to back there again this year.  :)

backroads UTAH 602 miles today.... too much fun and beauty, and the curves are insane.  Along with the monsoon style weather.

Moab jeep boys told me this road is hard packed and would be OK for my bike.  ADV stylin' a Connie14

Oh man that was hilarious!  I would have to agree with your friend.  I grew up in S. GA and had older friends who went to school there.  Went to a few parties in Athens as a senior in H.S. and yes......don't remember there being any ugly girls!

And Steve, thank you for the pics.  I really love it out West after being stationed at Hill AFB.  The pics are gorgeous!  Keep em' coming.

The bike has been 3700 miles since Saturday, I'll give "it" a break and hang out in Vegas another night.

About throwing dice all night tonight....  of course I took a few pics.

Sun so bright I had to use a CPL polerizer just to see a pic in the middle of nowhere desert as I came in from Vegas to Cali. You know how I am about liking the natural scenes, out in the middle of nowhere desert I saw an intriguing sign that said "go here" so I did. Here is the sign:

So I did both. Day/Night one I rode 1100 miles from Tampa to Ft Smith, Arkansas only stopping for gas.  Took me 17 hours but thats 'cuz I did a lot of "off the freeway" stuff on my favorite back roads in GA and Northern Alabama.

Holy frack, that's 64 MPH average.
That's rollin' you freak.

You gunna make it to San Francisco?
I'll PM you my cell if you are.

Thanks! Time kept me from san fran and the rest of the USA I'd "like" to visit, I bolted from LA to Phoenix tonight and got in at whatever time zone this hour is.  I'm going to visit friends here, run the cave creek twisties, and figure out a back roads way to see friends in Dallas from here and have some mesquite smoked brisket. You're more than welcome to join me on this venture too!

Someone from Phoenix in a thread posted "look me up when you're in town" and i can't find the message in the threads anywhere.  Would like to ride with you this evening if you're into it, can you please send me a PM if you see this?  Thanks!

Let me know when you're coming through the Phoenix area - I'll buy you a cold bevie! Just so you know though, it's HOT here too. Officially 118 yesterday, but my thermometer here at the house saw 120.0 for the high  :o. Be safe - there's a lot of kooks out there!

Thanks Brent - I missed it :(     Finally saw my special friend Tami and spent time with her this afternoon/night. After having some desert fun.

Phoenix is among my favorite places. Sometimes you don't have the right tool.... errrr right bike for the job.  I did the best I could with the Concours14 ADV style.

KEEP RIGHT>>   KEEP RIGHT!

They must ride/drive leftside  in 'Strilia!!

Dang Steve! I haven't kept up on the thread until today. Looks like I missed you coming through Phoenix. I worked about 70 hrs. last week so time would have been thin in any case. Too bad Joe's BBQ was closed. You must have hit it late in the evening or something. Not much happening in downtown Gilbert after dark! I only live about 4 or 5 miles from that place too.

Still interesting seeing your trip report along the way. I'm thinking a large percentage of us are quite jealous of your adventure - I know I am.

Dude, sorry i missed you in Phoenix too. I couldn't find the thread while i was there, for some reason I thought it was in PM and then it was too late.  Tami and i killed 'em on the blackjack tables at Talking Sticks indian casino in Scottsdale!

***Returned to Tampa after a 7006 mile bike ride. It was incredible seeing relatives and friends, mountains snow, desert tundra, valleys, plains, canyons, badlands, grasslands, and finally the FL sea again. Thanks again to the folks that met me and Rick Hall and Stavee especially (helped me with the plug).

No problem.  Perfect, I'm the same height.  So cool enough in the summer (all the way down I presume), and covers completely in the winter?

yes sir, I haven't had the need to swap it out during either riding season.

the past few weeks its been in the desert tundra, snow/rockies, and by the sea.  its my favorite mod by FAR (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/dblthumb2.gif)

Cee Bailey apparently really has their act together. I've ridden behind 4 different shields on the C10, nothing else comes close to the Cee Bailey for lack of buffeting.
