Title: sorting a KTM... its on
Post by: stevewfl on December 03, 2013, 10:27:17 PM
KTM 530, 908 miles, plated, bone stock.  Let's get it properly sorted for days and weeks long off-roading trips.

1st mod is a lift?  Picked it up brand new condition for pennies on the Craigslist.  Like a dummy I had one in the garage and let it go, thats another story. And let's LOOSEN the CHAIN.  (even though original owner liked these tires off-road they're coming off).

Stock stator on dirt bikes lack?  Let's give this bike some real DC juice for auxiliary lights, heated gear, radiator fan, etc Trail Tech has been installed.  I was amazed how (unlike my jap bikes) this bike uses "torx and 13mm heavily"

FED-EX man visited this morning. I have a lot of parts and would rather photograph them on the install, but thought this porn is worthy of a pic in the box.  Billet mount and steering damper, can't wait to play in the rocks. It looks so tiny in this pic. I was going to go with Ohlins but the cable management of this thing seemed sweet. More on that.... (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/icon10.gif)

And it "should" look something like this when done-

Bike was all to h*ll and back for the 3 mods:  finish stator wiring, convert it to DC, and while I had the front off modify front headlight to H7 and new housing

From the side

Mess under the headlight

DC rectifier, came plug and play with new parts,  harnesses to replace OEM, and adapters (trailtech rocks, called their customer support and got expert help with wiring throughout the bike)

Front headlight modded

Plastic-X polished the front lens to "ice" clarity  (and I hit the orange too!)

Bike put back together and it ACTUALLY RUNS!

****On a side note, the upcoming fan mod and such may add a few pounds to the whopping 250 pound bike. Lets take a few pounds off to compensate  (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/iconhammer.gif)

Its the bigger of the two lithium options for this bike.  About the size of some old keys, and weighs zilch!

I'm on the fence about what to do with these extra Excel rims with tires the guy gave me ?  Keep 'em?  Sell 'em?

Really need room in my garage more than I need an extra set of wheels  (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/readfacts.gif)

Next up is either the radiator fan, a skid plate, or...    not even sure with this list going on

Make sure you keep a spare stator, the word on the street is the TT stators as of late have been prone to failure, buddys croaked and a former distributor stopped carrying the TT stators due to many returns.
Damper, keep it at zero and make small adjustments as needed off road.
See if you can do a swap for some SuMo rims or mount street tires on one set and aggressive dirt on the other.  I'm sure you know the stock exhaust is as close to the best and no need to swap out.
Rad fan, skid plate, and oil cooler (more volume).  And lastly, seat time ;D

No thread on ADV Rider yet?

The guys here have put some major hours on the trail techs, and had probs with the other brand (can;'t remember name but they warned me not to order).  I'll get a spare now that you scared me  :D

Too many street bikes in the stable to fool with one more on street wheels.  I may just hang on to these rims for the day i want to sell the bike, unless you or anyone I know can use 'em.

Rad fan and skid plate are sitting on the table twitching to get out of the box!

There are so many 530 build threads on ADV with the same stuff i doubt I even post up unless a real suspension happens before I even learn to ride it (or fly out for some of your lessons) (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

I may be interested in the rims, I could see a third set for the dunes ;D  I bet you may have some of those in your parts? ;)  Paddle tire out back :finger_fing11:
Which side stand will you be going with?

You have an illness.
Please seek help before we all become infected.  Its that time of hear when mine starts up.  A strong dose of reality from my wife seems to reduce its symptoms pretty quickly.

Ok first let me say after tonight's mods was the first time I cranked since the stator/DC/rectifier mods and oil change that went with them.....  DO NOT OVERFILL A KTM with oil (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/readfacts.gif) Its just not a HONDA, it won't tolerate such.  Your neighbors will offer to call the fire department and mosquitoes will be dead.  Smoke show.  Don;t ask me how I know all this (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/badteeth.gif)

So tonight I completed the bracket, fan, and thermostat installed and wired it all up.  After I DRAINED the extra OIL out of the bike and let it run parked till it heated up, the fan kicked on.  Power and thermostat works like a dream (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/iconmerci.gif)

More bike porn came, the billet powder-coated light kickstand, and the right chain guide as suggested by Jason.

did you do the oil cooler?  I'm thinking change the oil often while focusing on the rekluse clutch and suspension  ;D

Not yet, but soon.  The Rekluse ate my budget and the Monterra overextended it!!  If things work out and I end up with the 520 SuMo that will be the first thing I do.  The 450 is my single track bike, a 5 hour day is a long one and low RPMs so it isn't as much of an issue.  It is due a change and yes, I will be running Rotella ;D

Suspension is first.  Critical to have the right springs particularly the rear.

The Shorai found its way into my bike last night.

I just want to show the difference between a shorai 14 amp and a "standard 12 amp" (from my C14).  The weight is the real difference though:

The linkless rear makes spring choice very important.  When its right the bike floats over the hack, have it wrong and it finds the bottom of every bump, whoop, rock or root.

Thanks for that tip.  I heard the bike was set up for a 180 pound rider, I'm 180 plus gear.  I will have that rear done per your advise.  Suspension is #1 for me on all my performance oriented street and track bikes, I won't skimp on the dual sport toy  ;D

After wrenching every night this week I said "I won't do anything friday night".

But I got home tonight, seen that long billet powder-coated sidestand on the dining room table (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/readfacts.gif)

So I had to take action (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/icon10.gif)

Ok it was time to put my own damper on instead of seeing that one I posted above with comment "it should look something like this when done"...(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/icon10.gif)

And Teressa has been baking cookies from scratch all day, major carb cheat day as I'm helping her by handling the "sampling and quality control" as each batch comes out the oven (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/readfacts.gif)

Out of the box the bike porn comes

take the bike to nothingness once again

Put it back together and its done.  Kudo's to Scott's for that "cable management" black piece the throttle cables are going through. That little bit right there made me glad I didn;t go with Ohlins damper.  Not to mention I'd have been drilling my bike with the Ohlins instead of the Scott's submount.  Also kudo's for Scott's because I had the option of raising my handlebars 25mm and went that route.

I'd love to say your gonna love the damper, but, well, the risers RTW!!  Start with a setting lower than you believe you will need, betcha end up going even lower.  I have got to the point I have the EXC at zero and the GS at a 1.5 (zero when I have the bike loaded and doing dirt/gravel).  Not sure why I didn't mention it before as it is a good chunk of change for something that adds very little value for the riding I/you will be doing.  It will give you a false sense of security and if set too high makes things worse.  The bike needs to be free to move at slower speeds and a damper set too high is the same as riding tight on the bars.  Something that takes a really long time to trust is just how light the pressure should be off road.
An example you can relate too, on the track, just how much pressure do you use in a corner and which hand is applying the pressure?

So, you are likely more familiar with the internet and how those who spent the money on an item and rave at how great it is.  For us mere mortals a damper is one of those items not needed, but it sure looks purty :)

promise I'll use it. I was hating I elected not to put one on the KLR after I rode another KLR on the rocks that had one =)

next I need to sort a plastic KTM skid plate (which I've seen take more abuse than the aluminum in the rock gardens and the big tank.  Both are in the garage.  Also the bling jewelry ironman rear sprocket.... and a chain and a front sprocket for good measure

Thanks, I'll be attending some local classes shortly while the weather is nice (before the scorching and I move on).  If they are half as much fun as my road racing classes were I'll be addicted quickly.  There are pro's out west going to give me one on one when I make it back out there.  Seems those guys really appreciate when a noob rides a KLR all the way across the country to ride in the desert with them  :D

I can safely say it is more addicting, track times are limited and can be costly, trail time??  I/we can go balls to the wall and have no fear of Mr LEO and if you have the flexibility of riding on weekdays the ORV parks are a blast for skills development.  3 years ago I swore I would never sell the Connie, but here I am, 3 days away from seeing her go to a new home.  Still love the street, but I love DSing even more ;D

yeah I saw it, thats the risks we take.  freak accident indeed.

Had we went over the side of the lippencott mine trail on the backside of death valley we'd have fell thousands of feet, and we were always on the edge and riding on rocks.  Thats when I heard of this video being posted on ADV, and my friends warned me not to go over the sides or our bike wouldn;t be recovered and a rescue helicopter would be required to get us.

The modern KTM bikes are bullet proof/reliable, street legal, and the dealer network has grown all over the globe  and sales is penetrating every other brand.  Performance = tops. What am I to be worried about?

Pokey you know me if a bike is a pain for ANY reason, its not in my stable long.  Bravery not required  ;D

Back at it.  Today I did front and rear sprocket (ratio 14/49), aftermarket chain guard, and chain.  Also swapped to the extra set of wheels.  The set on it had "Avon Distantania" crap.  20 hours on the bike, and the original owner needed two sets of wheels?

Anyway, the Ironman brand sprocket I saw on Jason's KTM in Death Valley i was told is second to none and went on tonight (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/readfacts.gif)

I NEED AN OFF-ROAD SOLUTION for a bike stand.  That is coming soon.  The race stand was great for the track bike but.....   There's not even a place on this bike to put spools and I had to turn the stand thing-majigs upside down and put them under the swing-arm

******Didn't trust the stand much, put two car jackstands under the center of the bike.  One on a GQ Magazine, the other on the AMA American Motorcycle magazine.  I don;t pay much attention to either, but they kept my lift from being gouged up.  Caught a picture of that get-up when I got the sweet chain guard.  I'll have a real stand soon.

Hand guards. 6 gal tank, and euro fender are in the garage waiting....(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/iconmerci.gif)

Finished for the night!

Thanks Steve!

"HIGHWAY DIRT BIKE" brand hand guards. I had never heard of them but Jason and a bunch of others highly suggested.

Many suggested these and there are 5 things i noticed I like over the competitors I'm familiar with or used:

1) no "expanding inserts" into the bar ends, this company literally provided a die tool and I THREADED the bar ends (inside of handlebars for a top duty insert)
2) the mirrors, OMG the mirrors! On road out / off road in
3) ADB billet handlebar mount (bike porn dash!) which will house RAM balls, switches, LED indicators, heated gear outlet, etc
4) precisely fit the bike during initial install with zero adjustments in a vise
5) thicker billet material but still light

Dislike:

PRICE!  GEEZ!  (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/badteeth.gif)

OH MY I'm liking this.  The bars connect to this and it replaces the stock top handlebar mount. Designed to work over my Scotts damper, and will house LED indicators, switches (for auxillary lighting) , RAM balls, heated gear plug, powerlets

Thanks!   I'm way under budget. The bike with 20 whole hours and spare wheels was about given to me. The steering damper sand handguards were the highest expenditure yet at a few hundred, most of the other stuff I've been buying on the cheap knowing real riding folks here and there =)

And the brand new condition lift cost pennies.... used hehe

Well since money is no object,...and you haven't done the suspension yet.  :o

Where is the titanium shock spring?

How about an FMF "Power Bomb" Titanium exhaust and silencer?  Those two will save you 6 or 7 pounds relatively high and/or unsprung.

An Enduro Engineering seat will save almost two pounds and be much more comfortable.  Titanium nuts and bolts is worth another 3/4 of pound.

Excel hubs, a 540 kit from Thumper Racing...nah strike that do the 575 Kit.  Add a "Batwing Carb", SXS forks....Hell give me the bike and your checkbook for two weeks, I give you a real weapon back.

I like the handgaurds best KTM set up I've seen. :finger_fing11:

Thanks - Suspension will be when the guys in Vegas get their hands on it soon.  The shop doing it does Dakar bikes and such, not that it matters to me but they helped me so much on my FL to Death Valley trip I can't describe in one post  :D

Suspension is most important to me, HP means not much it makes enough. When it needs engine work we'll get it bored.

Next lets sort the back of the bike with a Tugger and "euro fender" LED tail and license plate lights. The euro fender not only is LED but much smaller and doesn't hang down at an angle.

TUGGER is to make it easier to pick the bike up. The company embroidered stevewfl for me, which used to stand for steve west florida but with not knowing how to ride off-road now indicates STEVE WILL FALL LOTS   (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/lol.gif)(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/lol.gif)

I noticed on your other thread that you intended to run this bike in the Schmokie Mountains.  Given being a newcomer to the dirt you might pick up another chain and sprocket set for eastern woods riding.  13/52 or 13/53 should be good.

I got a hookup on VisionX and owe the dude big for the help and hospitality when I was out west, but I'll look at those.  You got a discount there too?  ;D

Thank you sir, I spend the summers in the mountains but only experience I have riding them is dragging my knee puck and crumbling the sides of 17" street tires  ;D

I'll be doing the desert first and between single track there's lots of straights, and sometimes tarmac between the off-road routes so I'm good 14/49.  I'll keep this in mind when I head up to Asheville for the summer though!  Man wow i don't remember what the stock gearing was, 15/45 if I recall.  It was horribly tall in 1st gear.

15/45 is correct.  Great for a motard, not so much dodging trees and bouncing over rock gardens.  You want it to be able to crawl at about idle on flat ground without wanting to stall or buck or fart.  It also closes up the gaps to 2nd and 3rd giving you more options.  In Ashville area you will rarely see 4th.

Au, contraire!!  Clutch is still usable ;D  A different approach is needed and there is a learning curve, but usable.  I like the Z Start Pro way more than the EXP, better feel, more predictable engagement point.  If Rekluse ever gets off their slow motion progress I will have one in the F8GS.

And while I was out playing in the garage, put the first two RAM balls on.  Of course because of the highway dirt bars my old mirror holes will allow for two more (route sheet holder/phone).  Also Paul sent some switches for the top clamp. Crappy phone pic:

Of course part of prepping the bike for out west as far as mods is fun,  must not exclude a valve lash check.  Thanks to our own "Steve in Sunny FL" for teaching this at a tech day at his house!

Everyone warned me the KTM MX style seat is brutal.  After my Everglades ride, I found that to be true.  Seat Concepts has a solution, and I modified my seat with their parts.

The Seat Concepts set-up is nice.  Its still narrow up front where off-road control is needed while standing, and wide towards the rear where but cheeks are planted when sitting.

Lets get together stock seat and a few materials and a staple.

Stock seat shredded and new foam and cover about to go on  (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/iconhammer.gif)

I was amazed at the level of detail in the stitching, also the top is gripping for control while seating, sides slick.

Wowsers I'm happy with the Seat Concepts product.  Time to get some magic desert dust and magic FL mud all over this this (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/iconmerci.gif)

Chet anything for you.  Burnt some midnight oil (eastern time) tonight on the tank, will have GL pics soon, THAT deserves its OWN post....

New long distance tank. I can swap between tanks within 5-10 minutes, its only 3 bolts and the fuel line. I'm lovin' it. Should get 250-300 miles out of this Acerbis when full.

My friend Rico asked for a side by side pic of tanks.  The first thing I noticed is the part between legs stayed slim as the seat, nothing sacrificed there (for control when standing)

Acerbis gave all the required NEW parts, but rather than use my petcock from the old tank i bought a new OEM one (for 5 minute tank swaps, my stock petcock stays on old tank)

Lovin' the mad fuel capacity... hello Blue Ridge, Rockies, Moab, White Rim Trail, Death Valley, PNW, etc (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

For a guy that "Will Fall Lots" the tank shroud will be a great bit of radiator protection!!  Looking good Steve, what plans have you made for a dedicated GPS?  Or heated grips (Cyclops and the new digitally controlled set).  Short of that I would guess you have 2 last bits, good lights and an oil cooler.  And no, I haven't found a good price yet.  Word to self-do the research dummy.

Thanks!  I like phone GPS, or that plus the junk NUVI on the bike with the new Spot Gen3 pictured above. I have heated glove inserts I move bike to bike

I like the looks of the new CCMs but i don't know if the suspension will beat our KTMs, or if i like the idea of a 5 speed for the type riding i do.  It only has 40 HP. I hope they do well and sell everywhere soon, the more competition in the market place and the better/faster/lighter the bikes get (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

Marzocchi suspension.  6th gear is available as an option at the dealership, and the motor is detuned/limited by RPMs, another easily reversed  dealer option.  Bump it back to the actual HP of 51.  It truly is another one of those bikes that just looks better in person.

Thats great to do all that suspension and engine work to match an out of the box KTM's performance, but wouldn't fix the lack of dealer network where I ride in US and Mexico

And it doesn't come in  orange like our bikes  ;D

Its been sorted!  Over 6 weeks left before the trips begin.

All I have left is install the rear trials tire and the front Michelin top shelf "desert" tire in the garage waiitng to go on the spare rims. Also I still need to wire more USBs and a power cable for the heated gear.  Maybe some axillary lights, or maybe I'll do when i get out west, if at all. Depends how blind I am 1st night ride  ;D

Before I start thrashing it like a rented mule I'll get final pics with the studio lights set up in the garage with the new GIANT LOOP luggage bling mounted.  After those pics the THRASHING BEGINS  8) 8) 8)

But that's exactly what I want to do. Maybe not coast to coast but I do ride multi thousand mile trips on my DR650 in the Rocky Mountains. Have been looking for an alternative for awhile now. All the big bore adventure bikes are plenty comfy but just too heavy to ride off road with my meager skills. But a KTM 680 might just be the ticket. 50% more power then the DR but the same weight (actually a few lbs lighter) than the DR. I want to be able to throw my camping stuff on the bike and get lost for a couple of weeks. That includes lots of pavement as well as dirt.

If you want the KLR style KTM, look at the "Enduro" 690.  You'll give up the "motocross" performance and single-track capability of the EXC line, but it will go the long distances with GOBs more power and much less weight than a KLR
