You're one of the ones I get crazy and annoyed at who races ahead to break into the single line that's trying to get through construction.

I am not racing ahead.  I am simply traveling along in a lane until it ends and then merge at one, predictable/marked point.

Quote
If everyone were to get into single file while speed is still high, way ahead of the bottle neck, then there wouldn't be any choke down/slow down at the bottle neck.

And yet that is not reality, so we have to deal with what we get.  I will make the same argument in reverse- if everyone did NOT allow people to merge randomly before the merge point, both lanes would move smoothly at the same speed.  But they don't.  You sit in the "wrong" lane (the one that doesn't end), 1/4 mile before the merge point watching one person after another after another in front of you allowing more and more people to merge and your lane gets slower and slower and slower.  Those "merging people" from the closing lane stop all the traffic in the other lane from flowing until they get what they want, and then suddenly they all can move again much faster, until the next person decides it is randomly the correct time to merge before the merge point.

Quote
I used that as an illustration of the human nature; not to make a direct comparison to shopping lines. People would rather THINK/PERCEIVE they are getting into a shorter/faster line, even if it is not faster, than get into your long line, even if it is faster. A long line appears to be bad and people don't want choice taken away from them.

That seems like a reasonable explanation.  Perception is often reality for lots of people.

Quote
When you say, "I don't want to pick," (I want someone to pick for me) "I don't want to decide," (I want someone to decide for me) and "I know it will be fair to everyone," (I want an equal redistribution of waiting in line), then you express an explicit socialist mindset. The American democratic/capitalist mindset says, "I want to pick," "I want to decide," "First come, first served." What does fair have to do with anything?

Actually, the capitalist mindset would be "I am buying more than others, so I should get special treatment", or "I have more money, so I demand a faster/better line for we people willing to pay more"  :)   Sounds a lot like the extra 25% add-on fee on the admission ticket at Universal Studios for the the "express pass", allowing you to get/cut in the front of any ride line  (yep, that actually exists.... it does at Disney too, but there is administered "fairly" because it is supplied to everyone at no extra cost and is limited).

Now we are getting somewhere, citizens!

Your reverse argument clarifies what I was trying to say. It is the "venture capitalists" who are taking advantage of the clear and closing lane then merging/cutting in line when they can. It is the weak-willed who allow these stronger-willed people to cut in line. These people are bullies! Imagine a theater line where people made their own lane then merged at the box office. Before you argue that this is not a fair comparison because everyone knows there is only one line at the theater and, technically, there are still two lines of traffic available before the merge point... When the bulk of traffic has already formed a single line well ahead of the merge point, there are always a few who take advantage of the open lane, often times AFTER they have already chosen to be part of the single line, so that they can cut in line. If you agree that this is acceptable, then how can you also be a champion of the single queue checkout line? Because this behavior is more consistent with observing all the checkout lines and trying to get to the shortest/fastest line, IMO.

As an aside, I am one of those who will break out of the single traffic line, and block the open lane well ahead of the merge point while also holding my position in the single line. Only when I'm in the cage, though.

In re: VIP passes... I have done the Universal VIP and it is well worth the cost. It is also super-capitalist because there are special VIP lines that allow you to "break in line" under the noses of the "lower-class" who have to wait on you to get on the rides first. Not instantly, but it creates in the lower-class a desire to be a VIP, something to strive for on their next visit. This is the capitalist way; observe, desire, work, obtain, enjoy. The NEW WORLD ORDER way, though, is GIVE VIP treatment to everyone. That's what people want... observe, desire, complain, obtain, enjoy. If you do that, then no one can be a VIP and the benefit is lost.

I'm not familiar with the Disney way... you're saying it doesn't cost more, but you have to know how to take advantage of it before the limited spaces are gone? So it's economically fair, but intellectually unfair?

That would make you the bully and illegally obstructing the free flow of traffic.

I'm not sure weighing in on the traffic debate is wise, but here goes anyway.  First, in MN, the DOT recommends the zipper method, where everyone stays in their lane until the merge point, then take turns.  Daddyflip argues that if everyone got into the single lane immediately, then traffic wouldn't stall or even slow.  The fatal flaw in that argument is that it only works if there isn't much traffic.  When there is a lot of traffic, requiring more than one lane, then it's going to slow and stall, no matter when people merge.  The only way for that to not happen is if people accelerate and go faster (never happen), thereby increasing the traffic flow past the obstruction, similar to a river that runs faster through the choke points, then slows again in the wider and deeper river beds.

Negative. There's no question of legality in either move. Only an imposition of will. Line breakers use their vehicle to impose their will to be "first" through the pinch point in bypassing the established line. It's not wrong, just angry and annoying. Line breaker stoppers use their vehicle to impose their will on would be line breakers. It's not wrong, but it is less expected and angry and annoying to would be line breakers. Bully status is relative.

Good one CS. Unfortunately, in the deep south, we don't play nice like that on the Interstate. When two lanes pinch to one, typically 90% of traffic recognizes it and starts forming a single line well ahead of the merge point. The other 10% blows by the line and wants to jump in line right at the pinch point. Just once, I would like to see the mainstream keep mergers out for about 30 minutes.

I'm looking for one of those -- well, it could be crap brown or even rust-colored, just as long as it has a trailer hitch. Oh, and less than 300K miles on it so I can drive it off the lot and not have the transmission fall out.

That is actually illegal (and an asshole type thing to do).  It is called "intentionally blocking or impeding traffic flow".    http://definitions.uslegal.com/i/impeding-traffic/  And I, for one, would go around you on the shoulder.

Disney gives you something like 5 single speed passes with your ticket purchase and you have to register which rides you want to use them on, ahead of time.  They don't cost anything and you can't buy them.  That way, you can be almost assured you will at least get to ride the 5 most important-to-you rides, almost regardless of how many people are in the park.  It seems a bit confusing, but it is actually pretty brilliant.  I was quite impressed.

Speaking of breaking in lines, just read this in the paper today.   A man breaks in front of someone at a pizza place.  Someone takes offense to this and they both go outside.   The line breaker stabs the other guy.  The other guy hits the line breaker and knocks him out.  The the stabbed guy's friend kicks the stabber...  Moral of this story....get it delivered.

Sorry, what you described is clearly illegal.  It is also "wrong" in most people's eyes.  There is nothing illegal or wrong about waiting for a merge point for an alternate merge.

I especially like to 'annoy' the person speeding up in the right lane and deny them their cutting in front.  I've seen a lot of near misses with that type of behavior including one of my own making.  I don't do that anymore.

I also find it annoying.... if I am in the left lane and being blocked by cars going slower, it really annoys me when people try to force their way into my following distance.  It is not like I could go any faster, nor could they make it go any faster, nor could being in front of me gain anything.  So I will close my gap when necessary.

I always move over to the right when possible, if there is nobody in front of me... or speed up... whatever I can to keep traffic flowing.  But it is just SO common for people to park themselves in the left lane and refuse to either move out of the way or speed up.   All it takes is a few to really screw up everything.

I just hate traffic.  I especially hate the tunnels where people slow down for no reason at all and create MILES of backup.  20 to 30 minutes of crawling, you exit the tunnel and NOTHING- absolutely nothing.  No accidents, no merges, it was just people being stupid.  Oh well; thank god I can walk or bicycle to work every day!

I will ask, but I don't think that law applies to what I'm talking about. I think it's wrong to rush past an established line of cars waiting to get through construction and work your way into the line at the last moment. So that's how I roll.

Nothing intolerant about trannies, although I must say I really detest the Chrysler kamikaze trannies that I had in my mini-vans in the late 80's and 90's.....POS.
