I've tried using my Escort 8500 plugged into the accessory socket on the dash but the plug won't stay in place for more than a minute or two. I've anchored the cord close to the socket but that didn't help. Has anyone else encountered this problem and, if so, how did you solve it?
-
Put a small piece of the fuzzy velcro on the plug, if you need more add another small piece on the other side.
-
Or plug the thing in and shove a wooden tooth pick in there to hold it.

A black toothpick, right? ;D

Had the same problem with my GPS until I hardwired it. I thought it was just my bike as a defect, but it seems that the basic design is oversized. I agree with the suggestions already made to "tighten" the fit into the socket.
-
a wrap or two of black electrical tape around the plug where there are no contacts...
....black toothpick.. ::)

Thanks, guys. Don't want to hardwire it 'cause I use it in my car. I'll do the tape thing.

OK... I will say it:
How will hardwiring it effect your car... It would work out better. Less crap to move around.
In fact I have my car hardwired, too.
The only issue I could see is if you are using the 8500 X50 Smart cord with your smart phone...
If you only have an 8500, then that is a mute point.
Anyways, this will get you going for 6.99.

The smart cord is a cool feature. You do need an 8500 X50 with Revision 3.6 installed.

Good for an extra 2 hp... ;)

Best way to do it for sure.

It is amasing how many post whores replied to this exact topic from the same poster on every ZG forum across the net.
If I would have seen this topic sooner on other forums, I would not have wasted the time and effort to give a viable option.
What a waste of time.

And yet, here you are.

Added a Powerlet to the blank on the other side.

Have you tried wedging the plug in place with the stove knob key? It won't work but the bent key might take your mind off the radar detector entirely....
Seriously this is a common situation. Wrap something around the plug such as a couple of turns of electrical tape (not over the contacts though) and that should hold it in place. An even better way to go would be to wire the device into the bike using the acc. leads under the top / left fairing cover if that works for you.

Bet a Honda 12v receptacle works better ::)

i had the same problem and i also use mine in the car as well as on the bike. bought a direct power cord from escort. i grabbed power from the wires going to the accessory socket and the other end just plugs into the radar detector with a plug that looks like those u use in a telephone jack. I just unplug it when im not using it and let the wire hang down. I have a redline and im thinkin the 8500 is similiar.

Cut a short piece of paper from 3x5 index card, wrap maybe a full turn of paper around the plug and push it into place, do it a few times until you feel there is a strong effort required to push it into place so it won't fall out.
Simple no cost fix.

Velcro pad in the socket works the best.....trust me.

Worked great for my GPS socket. Cheap easy reliable water proof and looks good too.
Go Velcro Pad ...

I wrapped black electrical tape around the plug. Worked great and didn't fall out once in 1300 miles. Very happy. Will use tape all the time. Velcro scares me.

Luddite.

I think that we need to get MG on this ASAP! ::)

You do see that my clothing is a bit dated, don't you? That should tell you something.

Ha very true. ;D

single side 1/4 insulation tape like you see in the hardware store. unpeel the proptective cover strip on the sticky side and cut to circumference length. wrap around plug so that it seats about 1/4 inch down into the socket. works like a charm on my gps plug.
