Im trying to leave my campsite to get some supplies and my bikes key thing wont turn to the on position. I have the fob in my pocket and when i press down nothing happens. And i cant turn the key thing to the right. The red light flashes.
What's going on and how can i start It?
-
Sounds like the battery in the FOB is dead... If you have the spare fob you can hold it up against the back side of the ignition switch and press the stove knob down to see if that is recognized.

I do not have the spare fob with me. I am in San Quentin, Mexico and there is not much motorcycle support here. What size batteries does the fob need? I can try to track some down.
-
Hi Kurt, from the manual:
If the battery of the FOB is discharged, key knob cannot be operated. Remove the emergancy ignition key from the FOB and fit the hollow of the FOB on the projection of the ignition switch, then key knob can be operated after about 2 seconds passed when key knob is pushed
Pic attached from the manual
Battery is also CR2025
Hope this helps!!!
-
It could be a battery. It could also be the switch is stuck. Tap it a bit on the left side of the housing whilst trying to move the switch up and down and side to side. Happened to me last night but I got it going again. Typically the fob will send a message to the bike stating the battery is low. It usually just doesn't fail immediately. If it was working the day before it could be the sticking switch rather than the battery in the fob. Course it could be the main battery as well. We've seen them do the same thing. Check those connections if you have a tool kit with you. By the way, the fob battery can be found just about anywhere. It's very common. Walmart, drugstores, etc...
-
Let us know if and how you got it fixed
-
Thinking about buying a c-14.
Does the FOB/key work if the bike battery is dead?
Will the FOB/key work if the FOB battery is dead or will it only possibly work if the battery is low and you place the hollow of fob over the projection?
-
When I changed fob batteries out, I tried the procedure outlined by Glenn with no battery in a fob. It works.
If the bike battery is dead, it should be charged before you get anything.

As Tim said above, if the bike's battery is dead, you get nothing and nothing works.
If the fob battery is stone cold dead, you can still start the bike. As outlined above, remove the key from the fob and press the hollow area to the boss above the ignition key on the bike. You should now be able to press the stove knob key down and start the bike.

Just out of curiosity, what model year is your C14?
-
someone with better knowledge may be able to better explain disconnecting the plug under the left side dash.
Anyone seen Brian around lately?
-
He was here the other day. He doesn't pop in as much as he used to...
-
I am in San Quentin, Mexico and there is not much motorcycle support here.
Kurt?
You OK, buddy? Did it start?
-
Yep, still around but have been busy lately on things unrelated to motorcycles.... and one thing related to motorcycles. :-) I have a very limited number of KiPass activation switch bypass harnesses and will be putting them up for sale shortly. Not as elegant as a K-rock perhaps but a lot faster and easier.
And regarding this problem, you guys have already said what I would have said- try the dead fob battery method, and if that does not work, check the battery for voltage.
Brian

No luck. I tried the dead battery in fob suggestions with no results. Anyhow, this bike is a 2011 and just a few months old. I couldn't imagine the fob battery being out.
Today I tracked down a voltmeter and the battery voltage measured 12.6 volts. So seems that the battery is ok.
I am trying to figure out towing options. Nearest dealer is probably 350-400 miles away in San Diego. I dont think theres a dealer in Ensenada.
What a pain in the butt. Any other suggestions before I spend a few thousand on towing (!)?
-
Did you try the "K-rock" trick yet?
-
On the image I posted showing how the FOB works, it mentions above that about possibilites of intereference from other radio sources (seeing as your batter checks out). Try moving the bike and see if that helps.

Yes. No help

I had to push it a half mile this mornin to get it indoors. The inability to turn the key persisted.
I am not so pleased with this Kawi that I chose for its reliability. It spend 3 weeks in the shop getting the transmission rebuilt (1,500 miles on it before gear 4 failed), and now this... With 2,300 miles.

I'm just now realizing, aren't you the same one that bought both the new C14 and the R1200RT just like a month ago? And then never posted any pics of either even after many said they didn't believe you??
Forgive me if I'm wrong or have you confused with someone else and I'll gladly remove my post, apologize, and eat crow, but this is starting to sound a little fishy to me for some reason... :-\

Anyone else think we're maybe getting played here with this thread? :-\

Gents, if you have nothing useful to post then post nothing at all... Need I say more?

I thought I worded that very PC and even admitted that if I was wrong I apologize in advance TC...
But ok. :-X

Matters not how PC you worded your accusations as all this person has asked for is help.

I thought it was a valid question considering his last thread and the fact that this is without a doubt the most spirited issue to start a riot..........hopefully he is a genuine member but I grew skeptical after the disappearing act. So who knows where the connector is to reset the switch?
-
You may have the 'stuck KiPass activation switch' problem. If there is voltage at the battery (or anywhere else on the bike) and absolutely nothing happens when you press the key down, the switch might be stuck.
Take off the top / left side fairing cover- the black one just under the left handlebar. Under that cover is a wiring harness inside a rubber boot- find the dark gray, eight- pin connector inside that boot and disconnect it. Reconnect it and if the dash lights up, you have a stuck activation switch. If there is a valid fob within range, and the dash lights when you reconnect that connector, turn the key to 'on' as soon as you plug it back in- you will only have something like 5 seconds or so. Then start the bike normally. You will have to break that connector and reconnect it each time you want to start the bike until you have the ignition switch assembly fixed at a Kawasaki dealer but that work- around WILL work to get the bike running as long as your problem is a stuck activation switch.
Best of luck and let us know how that works out. If you still have a problem post up again and I am sure someone will help you out. I will check back in later tonight and see if you posted anything else.

Thanks for the refresher training Brian. I needed that.

Looks like your closest dealer is in Tijuana:
Velomoto
Via Rápida Ote. , # 11944
Mineral Santa Fe
22416
TIJUANA, Baja California Norte
(664)900-7276
Which dealer did the transmission repair? Was it the same dealer that you bought the bike from? Maybe they could contact Velomoto as see if they could help you out with the towing. Have you contacted Kawasaki customer service? They might be able to help you, either to work through the problem or to help arrange or pay for towing. FWIW, the C14 is not sold in Mexico, so the service department in Tijuana will likely be unfamiliar with the problem.

I had this happen to me 1700 miles from home, while in Sturgis, last Sept.
The only thing that sounds different, is I don't remember the red light flashing. I had no voltage meter with me to check voltage, but even if it reads 12+ volts, that's with no load, under load it might drop below usable voltage, if it's a voltage problem.
I managed to get my bike started after what I believe was 30,000 depressions of the stove pipe, over a three hour period.
I tried tapping the switch housing, but that didn't seem to work, or I wasn't making contact with the sweet spot that frees up the momentary switch.
After getting home and having my unit, duplicate my Sturgis experience, I believe I found a better way of tapping or beating on the housing. It seemed if I turned the handlebars to the left, a larger void between the fairing and switch, for tapping the housing was created. My unit seemed to respond immediately to banging, by striking under the KiPass tit and to the left(between where the "on and off" graphics are displayed.)
There's a solenoid on the right side of the housing. That's what is preventing you from being able to turn the switch. There's a finger on it, that engages into one of three slots, until power to the solenoid lifts the finger. That won't happen if KiPass isn't working.
The solenoid side of the housing.
The best suggestion I can offer, if you feel KiPass is the culprit, keep tapping the housing, as I described, and also keep depressing the stove pipe key, up & down and hopefully the switch will free up, and the dash will come to life.
I would try my possible solution and if it fails, then Brians. Spending mega dollars for a international tow would really suck.
Brian hooked me up with a great Rhode Island dealer, who did the heavier spring upgrade, and I haven't had an occurrence since then.
Feel free to give me a call, but I don't know, if I could be of further help, seven three two, 492, four, nine, three, one, Gary

It is very unlikely anything will interfere with using the passive RFID.

Brian -- You NAILED it!!! I was able to get the motorcycle running this evening using the steps that you outlined. Tomorrow I will ride to the dealer in San Diego and get the motorcycle fixed. Yes, I will have to cancel the rest of my ride, but at least I get to ride my motorcycle to be fixed rather than have it towed!!
To the doubters: My offer stands. Anytime anyone would like to come by my house for dinner, coffee, or tire kicking, or if anyone needs a place to stay while riding, please get in touch.
Again Brian, thank you!
-
Wow. That was a great idea. I am surprised nobody else suggested that. :o

I'm very interested in how the switch upgrade is done.
Does anyone know or has anyone done the upgrade?
I have an 09 and have never had a problem but I'd like to be practive.
-
Seriously Kurt, do not cancel the rest of your ride. Keep going. I doubt it will fail again and you have proven you know how to get around it. Don't let KiPass win and shorten your ride.

From what we've seen, us mere mortals aren't allowed to possess these special unobtainium springs.

Thanks for this Brian, saved to Evernote so I can access it anywhere.
If you guys are Android users, or maybe even iPhone users, Evernote is pretty handy.
No affiliation.

i'm new to the concours 14, got a well used 2008 model recently and am really liking it, is this issue only on the new ones or on the older ones too?
-
I don't think so and possibly...
I may be revising this prognosis.....
-
Actually, its so hard to tell but we all like to think the issue is with the older ones and not the newer ones. Seems like there have been fewer reported cases from the 2010's and beyond, than with the 2009s and before.
-
Well, the problem showed up on '08's and has continued through to at least the 2011 models (see the thread about the guy stuck in Mexico with a new 2011- http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=6941.0 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=6941.0) ). There have not been any part number changes on the 2012 that I can see so..... ?

Don't fret too much about it. I bought my '08 new and I've never seen the problem. I know what to do if it does show up though.
-
Kurt, have you got the bike to the shop yet? Just wondering about the outcome. Please update us with the final resolution. Thanks.

I guess you are right, I should not jump to conclusions. After all he is brave riding to Mexico on his bike, I cannot say that I would be that fearless.. After looking at the map he was not in that bad of a location compared to Juarez. BTW looking forward to installing the security blanket.
-
maybe he is out riding his r1200rt. :rotflmao: :-X
i just read this hole tread from begining and i call bs. lol
we have a bunch of truble makers over on the ninja forum too, see it alot.

Guys, you did see T's posts a page or two back didn't you? Just because someone doesn't post back immediately after an issue doesn't mean we read something else into this. People ask for assistance all the time and then don't update us after the fact. Doesn't mean anything. So let's keep it that way for now.

Not everyone is a post addict like us! ;D

Yeah, I know. But still, let's give him a break on this for now.

Ok we can do that, just this once, er, twice.

The reality is we provide a tremendous service to C14 owners and there is no requirement that anyone reciprocate. There will always be those who have no interest in our community except when they need help. And that's ok.

You're very right. I enjoy helping other riders when/if I can.

I agree but it would be nice to hear the fix, speaking of which have you installed those stolen Heli Bars yet Jim?
-
Yeah that is true enough. In the end it really works out fine; those who just pop in after doing a search or looking for specific info. don't really participate and that is fine. Some people have been around here for years and it really does become something like a community and social exchange. Why other than you folks, Kirby doesn't have any friends to speak of at all.
;D

If Kirby would only drink more he might learn to mingle and enjoy a more active social life.

I'll be glad to teach him how to lift a glass. Might take him awhile, he's a bit stiff.

It is somewhat frustrating to have someone bring a problem to the group and then never hear of the eventual outcome. It's happened more than a few times here. I checked on the other forum and I didn't see anything similar over there.
The bars are going on but it's going to be a spring project. The neck is feeling a bit better but I've got an appt. with a surgeon next Tuesday to review my options. I have two big trips planned this summer so I've got to be ready for those. The bars should help me get into a more upright sitting position.

Guys, you ALL need to calm down. I just got back from my trip last night. I continued the trip using the suggestions given on this thread and was able to get the bike to start everytime. This morning at 10 AM, I go to the dealer for the repair. I'll be sure to let everyone know the fix.
Please remember that a lot of people do not check the forums 50x per day, and especially while on a trip. Frankly, I am a little put off by the drama and accusing that goes on around this forum. Y'all might want to consider riding more and pointing fingers less. You may find yourselves to be a heck of a lot happier!
Best,
Kurt

I don't know Kurt, I'm pretty calm and happy as is. I'm also happy that you made it back safe and sound. Good luck with the dealer.
I'd like to hear some about your trip south of the border, if you'd like to tell the tale that is.

Wow you guys are seriously hard on poor Kurt, especially after getting stuck in Mexico. Pesky KiPass anyway. If only there was a way to deal with that....
This assumes that Kurt is a real person and Mexico is a real country.... (sorry, couldn't resist).
Careful out there folks, don't be a victim of KiPass and especially, getting heckled by the masses on a public forum. Never venture out into the wild without.... a back-up plan.
<ROFLMAO>
Now on a serious note, glad you made it back OK Kurt.
Brian
-
Glad that you got to continue the trip and will soon have it fixed. BDF has a nice work around for Kipass to make things easier but hopefully you will get the fix from your dealer. Sorry for being so rough on ya.

Yep, it appears that Brian is developing an edge. Too bad. He used to be so nice. That's what happens to members who've been here awhile. They get warped. I mean, think about it, the man is talking to a dried up squirrel named Kirby. Kirby on the other hand, is the more normal of the two.

I'll bet that Kirby has more sense than to talk to Brian.

After doing business with Kirby I find him to be a fine and generous
fellow rodent and his sense of humor to be quite well developed.
