Replacing oil pan
« on: October 11, 2018, 05:50:35 PM »
My oil pan was damaged while loading my 2009 C14 onto a trailer.  Ive ordered a new “2010+” pan so the drain plug will move to the front instead of the bottom.  The new pan hasn’t arrived yet, but I’d like to prep the bike in advance.

The FSM says to remove the radiator and all exhaust pipes...  I’d prefer avoiding that as i just tightened my header bolts and flushed my coolant, earlier this year.

Does anyone know if the pan can be removed with just removing the muffler portion of the exhaust?  Or must the header be removed?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not going to say it's impossible without removing the headers but to me it sure looks that way.

Didn't see any specific tips for installation in that thread...  But after taking a closer look at my C14 I'm thinking the headers do indeed have to come off.  What a shame :-(

Do you know what size lock nuts are needed?  Or a site that sells them specifically for the C14?

I wish I had thought of the header gaskets before I placed my oil pan order :-(. Since I'll have to pay shipping, again, I'd like to avoid 3 orders, if possible.

Kawasaki PN 92210-0121.  But you might find some locally as they are standard hardware items.  8mm.

Anyone know where to get a non-damaged used oil pain?

Kawasaki appears to be on national back-order so there are no new pans to buy :-(

Is there any chance you might be able to repair the original?

Not properly, no.  The protrusion that is supposed to guard the drain plug has sheared off.  So even if I replaced the drain plug and made it liquid-tight it would be lacking protection.  I wouldn't want to risk a catastrophic failure, while riding, that could kill my engine or even spray oil on my rear wheel and cause a crash.  Not worth it!

The three oil pans that I saw on eBay were all listed as "great condition" but the pictures clearly showed a similar failure to what I experienced and the sellers had ground the protrusion down to make it less jagged.  It's disgusting how scummy eBay sellers can be.

I have another motorcycle that I can ride, in the interim, if the weather is nice.  It's just frustrating because my Kawasaki is the better "winter" bike, by far, and it's the only one I will ride in rain or really cold conditions.

I don't understand how Kawasaki can be currently producing new C14's using this oil pan but not have ANY available to sell me?  I know the C14 is NOT a high-volume seller, so I can't imagine that every single oil pan is allocated to a VIN on the production line.

This looks like it might be the one you want?

It may come to that...  But I would really prefer a pan that doesn't look like the C14 was turned upside down and a piano dropped on it.

Yeah, wow, that has quite a major hit on it.... not even counting all the other defects.  Makes me wonder what mine looks like (especially my Concours was necessarily lowered).

Have you looked at some of the ZX14 Oil Pans...... The C14 & ZX14 I "believe" share the same engine block......

They are indeed the same -- even down to the part number.  Unfortunately the part # is on national back-order.

When I search ebay for "ZX14 engine oil pan" I see the same mix of junky pans I saw when searching for C14 parts.

One in particular even made me chuckle.  It had the protrusion sheared off, the bolt was damaged, the sump had a major dent in it, and the back of the sump was scraped so bad all the paint was removed and gouges were taken out of the aluminum.  The description, of course, said "Lightly used in great condition".  I had to laugh, because looking at the pan I have strong doubts the engine survived the hit, and would even wonder if the rider was able to stay upright.

You could always take it to a machine shop and have a new tab welded on.

The tab was sheared off my 08 the first year I owned it, with the drain bolt being gauged at the same time. I rode  the bike for another 9 years and 150,000 miles with no further problems. The tab is so fragile it doesn't really provide much
 protection.
