RAM mount for Zumo 550
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:13:02 AM »
Thanks fellers,
appreciate your friendly, open replies.
It's nice to join a Forum where n00bs don't get dogpiled just for being new.

Here's my first question.
What I'm after is a RAM type mount for my Zumo 550 that goes through the steering stem instead of one of those two or three legged Techmount type ones

I just think it would be a neater install, it would be in the same place as the Techmount type deals, just less"Busy".
There's a black plastic dust cap that you can pop off and the stem is hollow.
The RAM mount would go through the steering stem hole.
I've used the search, put in GPS mount, stem mount, GPS holder and a couple other permutations of the search terms but couldn't find it.
RAM mounts website isn't much help either.
Have any of you blokes put one there?

Cheers.

Welcome.

Yep, I used this from RAM
http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045066045051054055/Default.aspx

I took one of the bolts and ran it through the steering stem hole.  Got a couple of washers (metal and rubber) at Lowes and a nut, ran a long socket up from the bottom, and now have a nice RAM mount right in the center.

Aha!
"Triple Tree Pivot"
Thanks felllers.
I'd never thought of looking for that term, it's not something we'd use.
Divided by a common language, that's us.
EDIT:
Ooops, sorry, I must have had the reply box open when you posted the "Moved & Merged " post.
I don't know how to move it.

The ram mount that goes through the steering stem may be better now? but when I had my 08 model I bought one and did not like the way I could never get it to tighten up and be solid. so I got rid of it. I think it was because of the rubber that it just would not tighten up enough
