Group Ride Anecdote
« on: May 14, 2012, 11:32:22 AM »
My wife and I went on a benefit ride this past Saturday. Police escorted, only about 70 miles. It started/ended at the local HD place, who was having their spring open house. There was about 30 bikes on the ride, and having the police escort was great. We barely tapped our brakes, let alone stopped at any intersection.

The ride took a break at a gas station/convenience store. All the bikes lined up- HD, HD, HD, guy with an old Triumph Sprint, HD, HD, my wife's Vulcan, my Connie, a Wing, and a bunch more HD's. There were 3-4 boys about 12 years old who were walking to the store and they started checking out all the bikes and saying which ones they liked and which ones looked the safest (which was surprising to hear!). They all gravitated to the Connie and decided that was the one they liked the most, probably because it didn't look like every other bike there. I whispered to them "it's the fastest one too!" which got some oohs and ahs from them lol.

We got back to the HD place, it was now packed with bikes and people. We checked out the band that was playing for a few songs, had some complimentary hot wings from Hooters, and while a few hundred people wasted an absolutely perfect day hanging around the HD dealer, my wife and I left and went for another 3 hour ride, which would have been longer except she had to be back there at 4pm for a group picture.

That pretty much sums up the two worlds between the Connie and the HD. Cool story.

  • Blue might not be fastest, but it's my favorite

So...I guess if I want to ride with some other motorcycles, then I should start hanging around the HD store (for only really short rides though)

If that's what floats your boat Jaxter! I only went because 1: my wife's group had a presence there. They are doing a fund raiser for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and have a 3 digit motorcycle tag they are raffling off. What better place to sell tickets and get the word out than an open house where they talked to several hundred people and sold nearly 200 tickets. 2: the group ride was a benefit for our local police department, and I have a couple friends on the force, so we did the ride to support them. We only hung around for an hour or so after the ride returned, and then went on our way.

My whole point of the original post was how a bunch of kids were geeking over my Connie vs the "be an individual, buy a Harley like everyone else" clone bikes that made up the majority of the group ride. The good thing about riding with those bikes is I averaged almost 47mpg on that tank!
