Great ride today, left Heceta Beach and toured down 101, stopped in Crescent City for lunch, and a few other gas stops. Took a left on 36 and was in Red Bluff in time for dinner @ 5:00.

57-70 degrees all the way down 101, it was even ~60 on the West side of 36. I had to stop at Fred Meyers in Florence for a sweatshirt this morning. 106-109 degrees about 100 miles to Red Bluff, had to replace the sweatshirt with the Hyperkewl vest.

Here is my take on 36. First 30 or so miles on the West side brand new pavement, SWEET. Only a couple of corners are marked, it has some rolling hills, rolling corners and was a whole lot of fun. Next 20-30 miles, the road was littered with tar snakes, would of been fun but after the second pucker moment I slowed way the  :censored: down. Stopped at a little store to soak my vest again and chatted with a Harley rider that was coming from the East. He mentioned the tar snakes are fewer and farther in between the rest of the way. From that point on the road threw everything in the book at me, it had switchbacks, a bunch of long rolling sweepers, rollercoaster type corners, crest a small hill and the road drops into a corner, nice long rolling whoop-dees, some straight stretches to open'r up, and a few more tar snakes.  :(

All-in-all that was probably the funnest road I have been on, but that is only because of the distance. I have been on lots of fun roads but never one that took me more then two hours to traverse. Lose the tar snakes and that road would rise to a TRULY EPIC status, and would probably be on a few more Best Road Lists.

I was going to head back on 36, then North on 3 to 299, and back up through the Redwoods, but there is construction on 299 with possible 1 hour delays. I guess I am going home the way I came in. I'm ok with that, it was fun.

I am changing my stance on HWY 36, but only the 60 miles on the East side heading West, and here is why.

I had not ridden 285 miles prior, it was not 110 degrees,  and this stretch of the road deserves to be calledI TRULY EPIC. I only hope when I make my video I can compile something that will show how much fun this road is. Problem is, I cannot get the humm of the Muzzy's coming out of the corners in the video. (http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll112/tomdvaughan/emoticons/fv-green-dunno.gif) (http://s286.photobucket.com/user/tomdvaughan/media/emoticons/fv-green-dunno.gif.html)

I said I was going to ride 36 back to 101, where's the adventure in that? I figured if I got caught in construction it would be part of my adventure. Plus I rode 600 miles, so I might as well squeeze in a few more roads. I headed North on 3 to 299 through Weaverville. 3 is a great road up and over the hill with lots corners and unfortunaltely lots of deer at 7:ish in the morning. Deer will slow you down just as much as tar snakes. I salute the Connies ABS brakes. 299 is another great road, I am glad I chose to go this route. I found the construction that I had heard about and I lucked out and hit the green light on both stretches of one lane road.

When I got to Crescent City I saw the sign 78 miles to Grants Pass, and figured why not ride another good road 199. I have a cousin that lives just outside of Grants Pass in Merlin, perfect place to pitch a tent.

Oh ya, I got hit by a bird today. It hit me in the chest, dropped in my lap, and flopped around til it headed South.

Life is good on a Connie.

I road out to Crater Lake today, because the waitress at breakfast suggested it, excellent suggestion. I had not been out there since I was a kid, great scenery and a nice ride. I have now made it back over to the coast, and Chet u cannot set up this tent in 10 minutes with coast winds.

Short ride home tomorrow so hopefully I have time to make a video or two.

I wish I could of screwed around on the beach and waited, but I have to go back to work tomorrow.  :(

I made it home from Florence at 11:00. Got the tent set back up so it can dry out and now I need to go wash the bike. Racked up another 1,500 miles on the Connie.  :o

Another EPIC ADVENTURE!

There is a great coffee shop in Florence. We actually love to stay in Florence. One of our favorite overnight spots on our ride.
