Removing battery - where did this little guy come from?
« on: July 02, 2018, 04:20:20 PM »
As I was removing the battery on my '09 today, this little thing came out of somewhere (see attached image). I inspected all the parts I took out, and I also looked for videos, images, service manual, etc. It doesn't look like it belongs there, but it certainly fell on the floor as I was removing the battery. Does anyone have any idea as to where it might have come from?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I believe that goes on the battery tray and serves to cushion the thing.  Look at the parts diagram for the battery box and look for call-out 92160.

Looks like a rubber grommet, intended to be placed in a hole that a wire or hose runs through, to protect said electric wires or hoses from getting wear holes when moving back and forth against the rough edge of the aforementioned hole.

Dang, I used bigger words in that sentence than I knew I knew.

Like "placed" and "forth".

I would think "aforementioned" would be the better example...

Thanks, jwh20. Unfortunately those 2 pieces are accounted for.

The grommet doesn’t look like it is split which therfore most likey precludes it as something wires would run thru.   If you didn’t pull any wires out thru the hole it would still have wire/s running thru it.

Looks like a grommet that a tab pushes into to hold something in place or cushion something.

Could have also been an extra which fell into the bike at some point and rather than fish it out they just grabbed another one.   The assembly line is pretty unforgiving and if The choice had to be made whether to stop the line to find a $.05 piece, or grab another, I am sure they would grab another.

If I recall correctly, the battery sits inside of a 'tray' that comes out with the battery when the bat is removed. The back side of that tray has two small protrusions that slide into holes (easy boys!!) that help hold the battery in place. I think that the grommet sits inside one of those holes to help cushion the battery. There's a similar thing going on the front of the battery tray but there's a metal bracket that has to be removed before the tray can be pulled out. Check the bracket for your lost grommet location.

That looks like the damper from the battery side cover.  The battery cowling fits into that.

I had a similar, "What the heck it that thing?" moment, when I was yanking the battery out not long ago...

looks to me like one of the 2 grommets from the silver colored battery retaining bracket, seen in this photo' near the base of the battery..
iirc there are another pair, in the bracket that is behind the battery when it's shoved into place, also.
