Title: What cleaner/wax do you use?
Post by: DarrellB on May 18, 2011, 07:56:18 PM
Just as the subject ask. What is your go to cleaner/wax for making your bike shine. I just tried Mequires Mist and wipe. Not bad for cleanning of water spots after getting caught in the rain. Just ok on bug guts.

I have used Griot's garage products for years. A bit costly but well worth it. I use the Speedshine for daily wipedowns and the paint sealer for my waxing. Great tech and customer service as well.

Plain or lemon scented.

Lemon.... I like bees; they are tasty with a couple drops of hot sauce...

For a quick clean-up I use Bike Spirits brand Original spray cleaner.  Like the old Honda stuff that was so great.  Takes off about everything real easy!
When I really want her to look her best, I follow it with Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze and then follow that with either #26  Hi-tech Yellow Wax or their Gold Class wax.
Ive used a lot of different products, and have seen most of them used, and nothing beats Meguiars for the finished product.  They know paint and paint care.

Of course this can turn into an oil debate like subject too, as everyone has their own opinion...

However, I will NOT use their Mist and Wipe stuff (or anyone elses) since I found the Original stuff.  I used it one time on my VTX and it, along with the cloth, scratched the fake chrome.  Used the Bike Spirits stuff, same cloth, no scratches.  Not sure why it matters, but one suspends the particles better than the other...and keeps them from causing further damage.

Pledge---any flavor.  If it's REAL dirty I wash :( it.  I tape all key slots and plastic bags over the handle bar switches. I use auto soap and water. Wipe dry and ride. 17 yrs and paint still looks great!!

I use Greased Lighning's "Showroom Shine" or "Proshine" as it used to be called. Easy to apply to all plastics and chrome, dries to a haze but doesn't laeve any residue when you buff it off and no streak marks.

For serious bugs I take a warm wet old towel, drape it over the winshield, wait a few minutes and wipe off.  I have used Turtle wax's bug and tar spray which has worked well for me and quickly getting junk off and keeping a shine.

Another vote for Lemon Pledge.

And another. Works good on the helmet and faceshield, too.

I use I.C.E. by turtle wax.  It is designed for painted metal, chrome or plastic and does a great job for a quick shine.  ICE also has a spot detailer which works good for a quick polish with out a wash.

Pledge on the Cee Baileys after cleaning bugs with water.  Micro fiber towel or shop towel only.  Someone told me to wipe only up and down.  Have had great results.  Just started using the Pledge on the plastics too, very nice.

Lemon.... I like bees

I switched to orange Pledge a while ago when it was on sale. For some reason it seems like the bees don't like it as much as the lemon. I have always used Pledge on bikes, but the last 5 or so years has been orange Pledge only. Try is out and see if you hit less bees.

Love bugs are out big time here in Florida.   The wet towel thing  does little to nothing  on those little suckers.
I was just given a can of Honda spray on wax and that works perfect. I spray it all over the bugs and park the bike. The next day or even later I wash it and they fall right off.

Does the Pledge work that way on  love bugs?

Love Bugs are an entirely different story.............  :'( Have you tried using a hot towel to help speed up the softening.

When my shield gets a heavy coat of bugs I'll spray on the pledge rather thick and let it set for a few minutes to turn the bug guts more soft.

Dan in Grand Rapids as in Grand Rapids MI ???

Funny thing is I've never had any real issue with bees in the first place.

Me too!  Only bees I hit now are the ones that lost their sense of smell.  :'(

When I wash it, liquid dish soap and warm water.  Plexus and micro fiber cloth when cleaning the windshield.

A 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and water in a squirt bottle work like magic on hard dried up bugs.  Spray it on, wait a few min, and wipe.  They come right off.

Original Bike Spirits Spray Cleaner and Polish.

If you can't find it, use the Honda Spray Clean and Polish.  Appears to be the same stuff.

Zymol on the tank.  One thing I found is with enough patience and finesse, you can buff out scratches in your windshield with the stuff too.  I use a Porter-Cable dual action orbit polisher to apply the stuff on our other vehicles, and tryed it on the windshield one day.  It polished out the small scratches in the shield and made it shine like a new penny.

Snarf, does that hydrogen Peroxide mix attack the paint or the black plastic on the mirrors?
