Radio stations playing continuous Christmas music
« on: November 30, 2012, 11:38:30 AM »
OK, minor rant, lets not make this political or something its not. I love Christmas, its the holiest day of the year and very special in our house, traditional, its the way we were raised. The season for us starts the day after Thanksgiving, we don't spend a lot, our parents didn't spend a lot. I love traditional and some newer CHRISTMAS music, carols if you will, I like secular music too, some. Anyhow with all those caveats in place let me tell you about a radio station here in Cleveland. It started playing what they call Christmas music 2 weeks ago, non-stop, all day, 24/7. Hey, its about ratings which is about money, its your station. I think that maybe there has been at most 60-70 Christmas songs ever written, the others come under what I'd call "holiday" music. You can't escape now, all day long everwhere you go its this "music". I'm done, I dread this time of year now, I can't wait for it to end. Its very hard now to really keep the whole reason for Christmas focused in your life and brain. I have a hard time believing they are making money, oh, they aren't they are being subsidized by......corporations here because nobody is listening that matters so for this time period in the Nielson ratings, they have like a zero audience. Oh, folks listen, we will too, ON CHRISTMAS DAY. Again, its their station, but for me it cheapens the whole day by ramping up folks to spend, spend ,SPEND! OK, thats all I have to say about that. I'm going to go listen to Perry Como.

I actually stop listening to the radio this time of year.  I like Christmas music but not that much.  I'm actually replacing radios in my vehicles with ones that can play mp3s now.  I do like the barking dogs but only about twice...after that it's unbearable.

You may have barking dogs but I have Fart Droid Jingle Bells...

I hate the commercialization, too. I used to work for a Santa photo company.

I, too, get sick of Christmas music after a while.   But with Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Mannheim Steamroller mixed in, it takes a bit longer than just hearing the more traditional stuff.  And the "Merry Axe-mas" albums.

And Father Christmas by The Kinks.

And of course, I am Santa Claus.

^^^put those apps on your phone, the standard little cable from phone to your car stereo (or blue tooth adapter) and then you are NOT a slave to FM or MP3 limitations.

I'm with you on hating the commercialization, it gets worse every year.

I prefer the classics myself.

And they keep playing that vulgar song by Brenda Lee in which she sings about having some effin' pie.

Bituminous, Subbituminous, Anthracite or Lignite?  Come now, you must make a choice!  You can't just say coal without specificity.

Yes, pay radio, I've listened to it, its nice, but I don't pay for things like that, modern muzak, but better. But, I do like the other suggestions too, the house with all the lights is interesting, I'd never do it though, I wouldn't want it next to my house either. Around the 15th or so, I'll go shopping for a few things and the tree will be up and I'll turn some music on. Plus, as my wife is Russian Orthodox, we will be having two celebrations, American and what she calls "little Christmas" the first week of January, we have friends over and cook a traditional Russian meal. And, I do have traditional Russian peasant Christmas music! I don't hear much of that in the stores.  ;D
