Title: '08 C14 totaled...
Post by: TRBN on November 27, 2013, 10:48:30 AM
My '08 C14 totaled.

Riding home from an uneventful day at work, no traffic, no surprises, just a nice ride home.  I stop behind a pickup truck at a stop sign for the next to last turn home, put both feet down, feeling great about the day.  The pickup truck rolls forward a few feet, but then notices another truck pulling a trailer taking a left onto the road we are stopped on.  The pickup truck in front of me stops rolling forward, throws it into reverse and proceeds to backup into me.  I tried to get to the horn as soon as I realized that he was backing up farther than he had originally been sitting, but by that time it was too late.  As soon as he hit me the bike went over on it's right side and I abandon it to its fall.  I did a little hop, skip, and jump over the right hand ditch and looked back to see the front of my bike under the rear bumper of the truck.  A truly sad sight....

The dealership estimated ~$5300 in damages including replacing the front forks, the front and right side plastics.  The insurance decided it was a total loss and gave me $7550 for it.

Sorry for the "disgusted" tone of the post.  I really loved my '08.  I rode it from 2 miles on the odometer to over 54,000 miles.  It ran 10.8 second quarter miles with my fat ass on it.  It never left me stranded (except when I left the key on with the headlight on, but that was the KIPASS' fault.)  It was a honey of a bike and was the best motorcycle I ever owned.

Looks like I will be moving up, though.  After a week of looking, I found a 2011 with 9K miles, and some farkles for $9k.  It's not as nice as my '08, it's black and has those damned linked brakes, but I'm sure it will help fill the hole left in my heart.

RIP

Aaron

Very similar thing just about happened to me on my first street bike but the truck had a camper shell and it was dark out so no way could he see me behind him...  I got lucky though and pushed the bike back really fast and lucky he decided to stop...  Sorry to hear about your loss but as others said glad your ok.

Nope.  No police were called.  He helped me get home, we exchanged insurance info and let the insurance companies work it out.  The insurance companies made it pretty painless.

Wow.  Sorry to read about that.  Glad you were able to bail.

$7550?  Was the bike completely stock?

My neighbor got $6000 for the '08 KLR I sold him when a 16 year old pulled out on him and totaled the bike.  It had over 50,000 miles on it.  The original owner had maybe $8000 into the bike.  I bought it at 6 months old for $5500, and sold it to my neighbor 4 years later for $4000.
