Title: Upgraded to Windows 10 last Saturday...
Post by: VirginiaJim on May 10, 2016, 02:42:10 PM
Was on 8.1 Professional...   Got pissed at the W10 messages and finally said  :censored: k it and told it to go ahead.  No problems with the process but afterwards I lost sound and a few applications were crying the blues.  Looked at update and it said it needed to do it.  After that, sound came back and the applications stopped complaining.  Added Stardock Start10 to give me that ole familiar W7 feel ($4.99) and everything appears to be working fine so far.

Any benefits other than getting rid of the spam request to update to 10?

- Windows 10 is a free upgrade.
- Windows 7, 8.1 will not be supported forever.
- Windows 10 is solid and well made. After you upgrade, you can reinstall Windows 10 fresh including a format if you choose to.
- If you do not upgrade for free in time, you will be required to pay for it later this year.
- Windows 10 has a better UI than Windows 7, so remove your UI interface because it will simply slow your computer down, even if it is just a little.

Not sure anything on your list is actually a benefit to me. Rather than just meekly submitting to MS blackmail and bulllying I think I'll wait.

MS Blackmail does not mean it isn't worth upgrading.
An outdated IE, Chrome and Windows OS will become very annoying in time.
But yes you are right, there aren't really any glaring benefits to upgrading unless an app comes along you want which is not supported on Windows 7. Hopefully it won't be too late.

Technically I believe you could upgrade, then roll back to windows 7 if you know what you're doing, then technically that PC is now on the list to allow a reinstall of Windows 10. Pretty sure they have no way to prevent this.

I continue to use Linux.  No nags, no cost, no blackmail, no spyware, no registration, [essentially] no malware, lots of freedom and choice.  Can be a little tricky sometimes, though.   Everything in life is a compromise.

Brent, I'm not that technically advanced to be able to manipulate the upgrade as you mentioned. Thanks for the info. As far as using Linus I wasn't aware Charlie Brown and the gang had any thing to do with computers.

95% of my work is on Linux but I do have a Lenovo Yoga with win 8 and Start7 to make it look and feel like win 7. I have never been bugged to upgrade. I must have accidentally set the right switches.

I fell into getting the 10 upgrade. Now I can't get Outlook to sync back up with my Yahoo email address and show me my old emails. For that reason, so far it's just another MS POC in my mind.

Post by: VirginiaJim on May 11, 2016, 12:07:56 PM
You know, I had an issue with that but I don't remember if it was just before or after the upgrade.  What happened with me was I checked the box (on Yahoo) for two step authentication (sends a text).  My Outlook couldn't handle that obviously and it stopped syncing.  I went back to Yahoo and changed it back to the way it was and I'm working again.

I had the Yoga option back when it first came out, but bought a loaded Twist instead, since it had much better performance.  Has been rock solid running Fedora and generally very happy with it (battery life isn't great, though).

Run Mageia on my home desktop, mostly CentOS/RHEL/Fedora at work.

After upgrading to 10 and then reformatting how would I go about doing a reinstall of 10?
Title: Re: Upgraded to Windows 10 last Saturday...
Post by: MrPepsi on May 13, 2016, 08:45:34 AM
Its certainly not easy, but here is the jist.

When you click to install Windows 10, if you can find it, you need to download Windows 10 to a flash drive, and make sure it's large enough to hold the entire image. Then perform the upgrade from that flash drive.
After the upgrade, you would then use the same flash drive to install Windows 10, and this time you would choose to reformat.
I would suggest doing some google searching on Microsoft sites to get the process in detail.

Yes, but what would you do if you ever had to rebuild it?
Now you no longer have the media to do it with.

Actually I do.  I downloaded the iso a week before (burned), and I had my data backup up on an external drive.

I bear no ill will to MS over upgrading their products.  Time marches on as do OS'.  It does on the products (IBM) I work with.  I'm used to it.   You know I just bought a 2016 Tacoma and I absolutely love it.  Got rid of a 1991 Dakota and a 2005 RAV4.  The Dakota was past obsolescence.   The RAV had issues that needed to addressed and didn't want to deal with it.  I was born in a time when cars had points and road draft tubes and ran on leaded gas, cheaply I might add.  However, I do enjoy certain aspects of technology such as wireless  and Bluetooth connectivity, PCs that run like scalded dogs (no dogs were harmed), color printers, scanners, scanning software that really works, microwave ovens, indoor toilets and plumbing, satellite radio, satellite tv, HD tv, HD radio, smartphone apps and on and on....  Unless you live like a hermit in the middle of Appalachia, you will be affected by advances in technology whether you like it or not.  I like it.

My previous lap top cried enough a month or so ago, so I replaced it with this one which came with Windows 10 already installed

Its fine it somewhat different to what I had become used to for several years, TBH I don't see W10 as being any  better ...just saying  ;)

I totally agree.  I turned off the talking bit so in some respects, I'm not embracing the technology where you speak to a device and it does what you tell it.  It certainly hasn't worked with my children and wife.  Many times OS' get upgraded and there really isn't anything of redeeming value in it from the user's point of view except support.  And speaking of support, I've never called any support on my WinPCs.  Done it all myself.  Windows 8 was universally panned by the masses.  It got better at 8.1 and usable with my start8 software but there were still misgivings over the the entire episode.  Windows 10 has addressed many of those misgivings and has had many good reviews.  I'm still working out the kinks as far as my setup goes....still that weird error with the Conexant audio on boot.  I'll fix it eventually, though.

Interesting time line of Windows OS...  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Microsoft_Windows

I finally turned on a "real" computer again a few weeks ago and again the box popped up to "upgrade" to W10 now or choose a time. So I selected 10pm and figured it would do its stuff. Nothing happened, but haven't had the box pop up again since.
So, the old laptop is still basically unused and still W7.

I installed the Win 10 update on my laptop and my desktop yesterday. First I created an ISO image for both PCs on a DVD (just in case) and then did the update from the link at the MS site. It all went without a hitch and so far I'm digging 10. I've done MANY an update over the years that I've worked in IT and this was the easiest update ever.

The only issue that I has was with the laptop. The update 'app' on the taskbar didn't seem to work correctly. I initiated the download from the app and it told me that it was 'getting ready' to download the update. It stayed that was for a LONG time till I canceled it. I went to the MS site and initiated the DL from there and everything went fine.  For whatever reason my desktop didn't have the taskbar app.

Title: Re: Upgraded to Windows 10 last Saturday...

what's ISO

"ISO image is a term commonly associated with CD and DVD burning. An ISO image (or .ISO file) is a computer file that is an exact copy of an existing file system."

Making an ISO image on a disk creates a bootable DVD that allows one to do a 'clean' install of the OS. Boot from the DVD, reformat the drive, and then install the OS.

Just joking...actually I have 3 PC's running windows 10 with no issues, 1 Mac with the latest software no issues on it either. Both platforms have their strong points and weak points. I think that the Microsoft software is more polished and user friendly than the Mac. Windows 10 has been just fine for me, it took a little time to get used to the differences from Windows 8 but once I learned the differences I think it is the best OS out of Microsoft.

I'm late to the trainwreck, had to buy a real computer for momma so she could do business, just picked up a Lenova 15.6" nice unit, must say...
MS 10 home came on it... I felt pretty stupid working to setup with Office and Kasparsky, but it only took a couple hours to start feeling comfey with the new "dummy systems" type navigation and icon driven menues and such...being old school XP driven, I always like the old style "list" menues...and trees that I can scroll thru...

Windows 10 says that it will delete the previous version of Windows that it replaced automatically in 30 days after the upgrade. Did anyone notice if this happened on their machine?

I did the upgrade on 7/20 and as far as I can tell the old files are still present.

Use the clean up system files option and you'll see the files. What's strange on mine is that yesterday the old files where there and today they are not. I guess Win10 knew I was questioning the 30 day deletion.

Check to see if your previous version of windows has been removed.

-left click on the start button
-select Settings
-select Storage (from the menu on the left)
-select This PC (from the menu on the right)
-select Temporary Files (on the left. my laptop says that I have 32.5gb of temp files)
-now you can select Previous Version of Windows for deletion (if you're using an Admin account)

My desktop seems to have deleted these files on it's own while my laptop has not

Thanks.  Mine is less than the 3Gb so it's definitely not there, just like Dave.

Has Dave ever shown up in all these years?

We all know "Dave's not here", but does that mean he's not home?
