I was looking at the brochure text, they rave about how much low end the VVT gives it. It does, but they killed it with the maps for the upstream butterflies. No clue why, it's not louder with a reflash or even with them removed, a friend has them removed and has a PC. Must have been emissions or mileage, most likely the former.
Intake noise is much louder with the reflash. Any reflash on the C14. Not sure why you don't notice it (unless maybe you have a non-stock muffler), but I certainly did... immediately... most people I have talked to notice there is much more intake noise in the area where they choked it after a reflash on the C14. Noise is one of the 3 reasons for the yucky stock programming: Noise regulations (mostly pushed by the American manufacturers in the 70's, I think it was, and still on the books, to try and destroy the competition of much more powerful engines from Japan), emissions, and MPG.
I had the same dead spots on my carburated ZRX-11 that the C14 had (although the more powerful C14 showed it even more). And when I "fixed" it with a jet kit- all that deadness disappeared, and the intake was much louder, too. Although not as noticeable as on the C14.
