Title: FI Error 23
Post by: JoeGTR on June 24, 2018, 07:11:33 AM
Hi,

I had this error leaving me stranded the other day. Rode the bike to work fine, went to come home and FI message on the dash. The bike would crank and not start. The error code is 23 which is the exhaust cam sensor.

I've tried cleaning the earth where the negative from the battery and other earths connect to the frame nearby hoping for a quick and easy fix but no joy. Is there anything else I can try before I start stripping the bike down to try and fix this?

Thanks

What happens when you turn the key? What do you see on the dash? Do you hear the fuel pump spinning up? Do the gauges sweep as normal on startup?

Fuel pump whirs, gauges sweep all normal except "FI ERROR" (or similar) on the dash and the red FI light permanently on. Bike cranks fine but won't catch.

I think the next step is to check the connector on the sensor.  Yes, that takes some disassembly to get to but I don't think you can check it otherwise.  If that's good, then I'd say the next most likely scenario is the sensor itself.

jwh20, I came to the same conclusion. The bike is now stripped of its plastics and the sensor connector is buried quite deep. Got a couple more bits to take off by the looks of things - metal supports on the right hand side, I'm hoping when these come off I'll be able to get to the connector.

If you notice the sensor o-ring leaking there is an slightly oversize one available from Murph's.

Sensor replaced and the bike fired straight up  :)

Most definitely. At the time I was thinking "F£$% it, have the local dealer collect" but once I calmed down I got a second hand sensor for £30 (By the way, you have a LOT more spares available on eBay on you side of the pond) and dismantled the bits necessary.

Now I just need to put the bike back together....

Please let us know the year, and mileage on the bike this occurred on, as we try to keep track of possible "localized issues" that arise.

I assume you are over the pond, so that also comes into play...

this would be the 3rd or 4th defective/non functioning exh cam sensor reported over the last couple years, iirc,  so there may  be some tie on coincidence by model year and installed/assembled bikes. Three or four incidences reported, on this small cross section (here) of owners, does tend to point to some probability there may have been a bad run of sensors at some point.

thanks in advance,

2010 bike having done 38000 miles.

thank you greatly

I was going to be a "mind reader" and say it was a 2010, just for giggles, and to keep you in suspense...

the other failures I noted, were on 2010 models... so, I may not be far off in my thought here..
I'll also note that when I was selling/sending out the improved oversized sensor o-rings, the only people that had an issue with them "not fitting" also owned or were installing on a 2010 model... hmmmmmm I don't find this to be a coincidence so much now.
Thank you for your response, you have helped the database greatly by your input.

ride safe,

So what other failures for the 2010 model do you have in the data base MOB? You have my gear tooth failure right?

I recall your transmission, and it was not the only occurrence of it, there were at least 2 others, strangely enough, so far I can recall. And they were pretty much exactly as yours, a fractured/broken tooth.
but the cam sensor and O-ring thing, so far is the most common one I have found.

thanks for the reminder tho,
