Title: My thoughts on the Forums
Post by: GPz1100 on May 14, 2011, 07:45:58 PM
back in 07 when kawi was teasing us with rumors and then pics of the c14, i found this forum. i read up on the plus and minus aspects of the bike. i looked at the other brands then bought the c14. with the information i gleaned from this forum i modified mine to my taste. i even joined cog the club. later on i learned of a dispute but paid no attention to it. it didn't involve the bike or affect the information that is useful. sometimes i went to the arena but not that much. not my cup of tea so to speak. my post count was low, i felt other, more experienced folks, had more to contribute than myself. i bought and sold items in the classifieds. i figured out who the drama queens, post whores and bullies/commandos were. pretty much avoided getting involved with them. the dispute as i understand it, is still going strong. lots of things being said.
it's a shame so much information was lost but i have no doubt it will all be as it was because of the camaraderie on this forum. as for "cog the club/forum"...i will still visit the forum from time to time but i let my membership lapse. i never felt welcomed or that i fit in. i know there's a lot of the same people here as is there, but this place has a better "feel" to me. i'm glad to be here and that the site is back up.

You absotivley nailed it GPz.
It only takes a few minutes on either site to get the feel for the atmosphere of the population. This is the best site any way you look at it. I know that this is my personal opinion, and some will say I should just keep it to myself. But sometimes you just have to open your mouth and speak, and I tend to do that a lot more then I should anyway.
So just hang for a while here, then go to that other site and hang, make up your own mind, and I'll see you on the road sometime.
Everyone please ride safe.
Greg

Welcome GPZ, and you really are "welcomed"!  :grouphug:

I never say this but I have to agree with you on one point, red is faster for the GPZ, nice avatar!! I use to have one of those myself...

It was kind of like this in the V-Strom forums that I used to frequent before I traded up to the C14. Two boards, different purposes.

Stromtroopers was like this one, very much a Saturday get together for a little bench racing and good natured "discussion" among friends. Plenty of good tech info, but still fun. V-Strom Riders International is very tech related and can be likened to sitting at Moms house on Sunday morning before church, a little more reverend and moderated.

There was/is no competition between the two, but like ours, each has it's own intended purpose.

As to ZGGTR and COG; I will be active on both. Here the atmosphere is more relaxed and, dare I say, fun. There, maybe a little more "stiff'", but, with it's main purpose, being the front end for COG itself.

GPZ, well said and I agree. Especially about the bullies who have to insert politics and religion into a motorcycle forum, throwing out a lot of hate in the process. I can do without that here.

I am a member of several motorcycle forums and I'm a moderator on three sportbike forums.  I see a whole range of site attitudes and rules.

I'll cite two extreme examples.  One is a BMW sport touring forum (if you ride Beemers you probably know which one it is.)  It is the strictest forum I've ever belonged to and they enforce restrictions on discussions involving religion and politics to the point of paranoia, and expect every member to model themselves after the Cleaver family.  Don't get me wrong, I like the site and it has served me well, but it isn't very enjoyable.  The atmosphere is a tad uptight.

The other extreme is a certain GSXR sportbike site, where basically anything goes, and there is no real moderation.  That particular site is fairly useless to me.  A slight step above that is the main GSXR site where I am a moderator.  We do not allow personal attacks and excessive flaming, but we don't care what topics are discussed as long as they are discussed in the appropriate forums.  If someone wants to talk politics fine.  If someone wants to talk religion fine.  If someone wants to drop F-bombs fine as long as it isn't in a thread title.  Most of the site participants are of the younger age set so you can imagine that tempers flare from time to time.  Personally, I think it is a good, useful site.  As a moderator I have to draw blood and sign death warrants on a daily basis though.

This particular site falls somewhere in the middle.  The rules are reasonable and the moderation is not draconian.  I would characterize this site as a good, useful technical site with a relaxed, enjoyable attitude.

That's why we have the arena.

I like guns. Most of these forums have a gun section or at least the few that I frequent. Does that say something about the forums or Me. :-X

I won't go into any of the politics, but I was misinformed (until VERY recently) thinking THIS was the COG endorsed/sponsored forum.

I was wrong and like MOST "stories" there is more to it than meets the eye!

No judgements from me!

Seeing such a low COG number posting regularly here I think is a very clear sign that their is good people on both sides of the fence (as I know that there is) who have simply been caught up in the whirlpool that the falling out created. Very soon the dust will settle and we should all be able to gather around the fire, kick a little dust with our boots, and with a red face stick a hand out in friendly gesture and get back to the business at hand BIKES and FRIENDSHIP....

I just don't get it. I've seen you complaining about the gun talk a couple of times on this forum. What's the problem? If you don't like gun talk then just stay out of that forum. It's as simple as that I would think.

It's not that I don't like the "gun talk" I love to participate in discussions about guns. and especially gun laws/rights.

It's that it has no place on the main page.
I'd say the same thing if there was a recipe section instead. Although perhaps less passionately.
Why, are you saying I shouldn't be able to politely express my opinion?

T-Cro - I know you are a long term member as I am.  I was "peter90A5", but changed on the new forum to reflect the new bike.  I was surprised (to say the least) when I came to the forum looking for answers to questions about the C14, and the Forum was GONE!

Then, I was provided some history from a reliable source.

As you said T-Cro, I prefer for it to be about MOTORCYCLES and NOT politics!  Guns and knives are FINE with me too!

Another couple of speed bumps to be navigated with and we will get there.  :grouphug:

Are you saying we can't disagree with you?  Lots of things in life are out there, don't agree with them, don't go there.

I'm not sure which of my lines you're reading between where I might have suggested that you shouldn't be able to express your polite opinion, can you point that out for me please?

The gun talk is not on the main page, it's in a separate section. I don't see you complaining about the Funny Pages section. This is a motorcycle forum, funny stuff shouldn't be allowed right?    ::)

:banghead:

Jeez, stop crying about it already  :deadhorse:

If you don't like it don't go, if you want to complain then the administrative forum is the place to go. :shoot:

I didn't like the Arena, but it served it's purpose. I went there occasionally but pretty much stayed away. I also didn't complain to have it closed.

Actually, I think you also read more into my being a long time member posting regularly on this forum.

With my C10, having had it for over 20 years, I had gotten to a point that I rarely posted on the forum, but supported COG by maintaining my membership.  I had an awareness of a "parting of the waters", but nothing more.

With getting used to the new bike, and having questions, I came to the forum for good information as always.

When I was provided with MUCH more information than I ever knew existed, as I said initially, I was very misinformed, or perhaps unaware would be a better word.

AGAIN, I do not want to proliferate political lines being drawn, or bad feelings, but this forum on this "domain" was begun under circumstances far different than being portrayed.

AND, as stated in one of the all time great movies..."that's all I have to say about that".
