Title: Ohio tech session in the planning stages-thoughts?
Post by: Strawboss on June 23, 2013, 08:09:27 AM
COG member Joe Vincek of Brunswick OH which is about 20 miles south of Cleveland has asked me to help him organize a tech session for Ohio. He has an awesome garage with lots of space, two bike lifts, tools of all kinds and is knowledgeable in many areas. I'm posting this now as a way to gauge interest and see if this is possible. Obviously a Saturday or Sunday I'm thinking in August or early September would be best, but which day for the most people? Give me some thought here and we can decide if we can do this. Thanks.

Well Rich, with 35 folks viewing and nobody talking, there it sits, gonna need more people than you and me before I plan anything more. Would a weekday work for more?

Usually the host works on his/her bike or  donor bike is used to do something, valves, tires, carbs, install a farkle or six, usually something that's popular and many ask about it. Many bring items to install on their bikes as its a lot of fun and you learn a lot about your bike by watching someone lese install stuff on their bikes, plus, if something comes up, you have 9 or 10 folks there to think and help and sove any install problems that might arise. Its usually a weekend, when I hosted a session, after some coffee and bagels I did my tires and had a little lunch set up, I started around 10AM and the last guy left at around 4PM. Joe has a probably a 30X30 garage set up like a small service bay at a dealer, he's got two bike lifts, air compressors, all the tools you can shake a stick at, refridgerator, lights, hoses, concrete pad out front, electric, and does all his own work.  So far, we have 3 who have asked about it, not enough for me to think about going any further, planning, organizing, working with Joe, making calls and getting it done. Sorry, for the whole state of Ohio I thought there would be a bit more response. I drove 350 miles to Mike Bowling's session to watch him do his valves because I was planning on doing mine soon, thought it would be a nice excuse for some to take a ride. Guess not.

is there anything I can to assist with the planning/execution?  I recently purchased my 2011 C14 months ago and have had a ball riding it around town and I would love the chance to learn more about the mechanics of the motorcycle.  I live on the other side of the valley, a short 20 minute ride to Brunswick.

Both Joe and I both have C-10's, so again, I'd have to plan and coordinate someone who has a C-14 and has done a valve job to show up and assist. Sorry, we need to do a ride first, talk, plan something and go from there. Theres no Ohio AAD, not really a problem but it would really help. Anyhow, maybe just a ride over to someones house, sure, I could do that, we pick a day, come on over, talk and we go from there. I'm in North Olmsted.

I'm well versed in the valve adjust both C14 and C10... I can do a C10 in 2 hours...
C14 first time adjust will take 2 days, due to the need for procuring the shims after you get down to where they are.  Sorry that ain't a single day job.
as for beinhg a doner.....I'm sure every C14 owner out there would "donate" thier bike for me to adjust the valves..... seeing as it's a $400+ shop fee 8) 8) ;D ;D ;D

The O-ring replace, on a lift, can be accomplished in 3 hours easily.

StrawB, don't be soo hard on yourself bro, it's July 4th, and everyone is doin their own family thang, you know how that is...just hang tight, some others may pipe up.....if not, you can come over and drink beer in my shop, and we can tell tall tails till the weeee hours.... ;D

Lets just say I think it is wayyyyyyy over exaggerated for checking the valves.  ;)  They need to be checked for sure, but at less than 20k I am not convinced of.

And you are welcome to the shims whenever you need them, just say the word.

Well if you do it yourself, please let us know how it goes.  We do loves a good story now and then and some of them (dealing with valve adjusts) have been humdingers...

Joe and Dave, I appreciate you guys trying to get something together. It seems like trying to get the Ohio guys together is like trying to herd a group of cats. I am doubtful for a wrench session near Cleveland (uncertain work schedule, busy at campground when I do have a weekend off, and too far for my candyass to ride roundtrip in a single day,) I would like to get together sometime, I haven't seen any COG members since the Kentucky ferries ride ;).   Steve

Any thoughts about an Ohio (Cleveland/Akron area) Tech Session in September?  I will assist any way I can.

Joe Vincek in Brunswick has a huge garage with two lifts and room for maybe 6-7 more bikes, he's got tools, compressors, tools, knowledge, tools, time, area and wants to host a session, he's a C-10 guy though, so if you got a C-14 I'm not sure how that's going to pan out. I've got things going on in Sept. and passed on trying to organize a session sooner as interest seemed to me to be lacking for amount of Concours in Ohio I see, COG members in Ohio and NE Ohio in particular. Again, I passed, if you'd like to respond here to work with Joe and organize something I'd be happy to forward his info to you to ask him whats up as he has the next few weekends off.
