Sad day for me....
« on: July 05, 2011, 03:25:51 AM »
The 4th of July weekend turned out the worst for me. Lost my 4 year old cairn terrier. He just was too young to lose....

He has been sick for the past several months. Vet was trying to determine what was wrong with him. We finally were concluding it is some sort of auto immune disease and was getting ready for another battery of tests. But suddenly, his condition plummeted last Sunday. He started to head press, lost coordination, starting shaking and would cry out once in a while as if in great pain. None of that made sense so we immediately took him to the animal hospital emergency at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. They kept him over night trying to figure out what is wrong. They thought it has to do something in his liver that is causing ammonia build up in his blood causing loss of brain function. But the test came out negative. They concluded it has to be some sort of cancer/tumor of the brain. An MRI was next in line. But his condition kept worsening and by next day noon, he cannot see, hear or smell. He cannot recognize or register anything. All he wants to do is go over to someone or some corner and head press. Wife and I finally took the painful decision of putting him to sleep. I was just not ready to say goodbye....but could not see him suffer anymore. His pretty little face is stuck to my head - I cannot sleep or concentrate on doing anything....

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. The only consolation was that, for his all-too brief time here, he had owners who loved and cared about him.

Awaz,

I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss. I know how tough it can be to lose your friend. My thoughts are with you.

We had a Cairn terrier years ago, great lil dogs.

Prayers to you and your family, I understand how hard of a decision you made.  Hope this helps you understand what a courageous action you have taken.

From Friend to Friend

You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

I have not seen this before, I need to stop reading these threads while at work  :'(. My sincere condolences on your loss. Like so many here, I too have had to make this painful decision for a beloved pet. As the poem states, they are counting on us to do the right thing. As difficult as it was, you did the right thing.

Guys and Gals, I'm an avid waterfowl hunter, I hunt all over the world.  Please understand that I am not diminishing anyone's love for their pet, but when you have to put down a dog you've trained as a pup and spent countless hours training and traveling as well as hunting with it is not measurable the pain one goes through.  I have sent that poem to many people and have had some tell me what great help, focus and understanding it brings.  I am glad to send it to anyone going through a tough time.  I have read it probably 50 times, most times I get a little choked up.  I hope it will help you through the tough times, I know it has me.

Thank you all for your kind words. He was truly my stress reliever. You never know how much they mean to you until you lose them...
I have been trying to divert my attention to my other dogs, but it is not the same. Our one other male just do not want to be bothered, the female is just too needy, and we got yet another male that we sorta rescued and he is still too jumpy for much attention. No wonder I was so attached to my little pup that I lost. It always felt so good to lay my head on his little belly and feel his little kisses. He somehow had just the right temperament....
Well, I guess it is gonna take a bit for this hurt to go away from my heart.

Kindered spirits never change.  They just live in differant worlds.  I always get a tight throat when I think of all of my little buddies and I always swear, never again.  How can someone who has felt the loyalty live without it?  I have a hard time seeing a future without a four legged companion.

May he rest in peace,

Brother My heart goes out to you. Nothing seems to help ... but the knowing you have a group here that really feels your pain too.
We put down a 17 yr old just last year my eyes are calling to her now from your post. You have our prayers . Have your pup give our Maggie a shout
I know you're still talking to him

The eyes of a Dog

Through the eyes of a puppy

Life is easy I don’t see the fuss
Love, eat and sleep
Wake Mom in the morning just to see her smile
That’s I earn my keep

Bark at a bug
Thought it wanted to play
Pee on the rug
Just couldn’t wait
All part of the fun in my day

Through the eyes of a Dog

I have a job, lots to do
Wake up early share breakfast with Dad
Dig a big hole but that got him mad
Monitor the house during the day
When he gets home we still play

Through the eyes of an old Dog

Now I’m older not much to do
Teaching the pups took a lot of my time
But when I’m gone I think they will do fine
Life’s a little hard, can’t run ,can’t play
Lay in the grass and enjoy the day

But now I’m so tired I just want to rest
I love my pack and given my best
For this time when I sleep
My eyes will close for good
 Don’t cry don’t weep

Just think of the love
