Title: Did a Iron Butt Cert. Ride
Post by: 2talltim on June 16, 2014, 02:35:47 PM
Just got home, a group of us decided to do the Iron Butt Associations SaddleSore ride. So we left out of Cleveland and rode to Chamberlin, South Dakota for our cert. ride it was a hair over 1100 miles on day 1 and we did it in 18 hours. Could have done it quicker but one guy needed gas every 120 miles and every gas stop was longer then i should have been, but still got it done. While out there we also toured the black hills, mount rushmore, the bad lands and devils tower. In total it was a 4 1/2 day trip and 3000 miles, by far the longest haul i have made on any bike.

here is a link to the pics i had on one camera the rest are on my phone and on other peoples cameras, get more up later, and as always     i never take enough pics.

Congratulations. That's great! I'd like to do that one day. Any long distance riding advice for the rookies?

Nice ride...

Did my first in January 2014 with my daughter to celebrate her 15th birthday. 1,095 miles in 23:20. Too many stops,

Second one failed, hit by drunk driver

Third in 03/16/15: an in-state AZ SS1K and collected 3 more National Park stamps. 1,030 miles in 22:00. Made about 22 stops in total.

Congratulations!  The longest I have ridden is 800 miles when I ran out of daylight.

I-10 from Houston west would be very doable with the Texas speed limits.  12.5 hours or less of ride time.  4 fuel stops add maybe 2 hours.  I usually stretch and then eat while walking around.

I won't ride at night except locally due to the increased risk of animal strikes and less visibility.

Congrats.  It is something to be accomplished if it is tickling at your brain.  I did the 1000 and the 1500 back in 2010 just cause it was bugging me.  Glad to have done it, but not something I care to repeat as a loop anyway.  I think you did it right.  To get to somewhere cool, then put it in the pocket and enjoy the rest of the ride.

Not for everyone, but it's a big world with many flavors of ice cream!   8)

Congrats. I've done one official saddlesore and one unofficial. The official I did with a friend and it took us 20 hours. The unofficial I did solo and completed in 14 hours, I only stopped for fuel and food. No stop was more than 10 minutes. The big trick is to keep you butt in the saddle and just keep moving. I carried a camelback the second time so I could hydrate while riding which help cut time during stops.

Congrats! I've done it, but never had one certified. I need to do that one day. I've done enough that qualify.

Yeah, I did a SS1000 and have never had it certified. I asked about it and they said no time limit to turn it in. I still have all the documentation. I bought a notebook just for the occasion and put all the receipts in there. When I got done with mine I didn't want to forget anything so I sat down and wrote a report and attached pictures to it. I still have it. Great to go back and read it cause I couldn't begin to remember all the little things.

Yeah, "Time- Space" compresses after enough sleep deprivation. I can remember a million sights on my long distance rides but the funny thing is that they are not strung together in any order, just random images. I still think there is really only one state west of Illinois named Monkodaington or something like that.

Something almost as good as an actual IBA ride itself is going on a group saddlesore 1000. The Minuteman 1000 in MA starts at 6:00 AM Sat. morning and ends at 6:00 AM Sunday. Eighty riders, more or less, and about everyone stays at the hotel Friday night to start out Sat. morning. But being the chea.... er, frugal folk that we all tend to be, virtually no one gets a room for Sunday. So there are eighty dirty, somewhat cranky, sleep deprived people wandering all over the hotel and grounds.... lots of them sleeping in the <closed> bar, in the hallways, around the rally / banquet room, etc. It looks like a starving, homeless bunch of people who happen to be wearing boots and have a helmet.  :D :D
