So, has anyone here rooted their Android phone? I have an HTC Inspire that I just got from AT&T, and really don't like all the crap that AT&T has disabled/installed/whatever. Looks like rooting it is fairly simple, but just wondering if there is anyone who has done it.

naw, I'm a jailbroken Iphone junkie, this will be fun to read.

I need a spare microSD card, so I ordered up a few 4GB ones for the rest of the family. These things are incredibly
cheap frugal these days. $4.99 each. And a 16GB for myself... :D (The 8GB it came with was filling up fast...)
I'll take one of their smaller old ones to do the rooting. (I love coming up with "excuses" to upgrade stuff...) Need one to make what is called a "gold card".

So my 17 year old son says you can't update your phone if you root your phone.........true?

I rooted my HTC Droid Eris. No problems at all. I was much happier with the rooted firmware I used than the original. I would recommend you get one you can update without losing everything each time. There is usually good info at the androidforums.com. I have an Incredible 2 right now, but can't find a reason to root it.... yet.

AT&T disables the phone's WiFi Hotspot ability unless I pay even more for a data plan. (Already paying for one, but don't need the extra data amount that it entails) Plus I'd like to get rid of some of the stupid apps that are running for no reason, like Facebook - I don't have an account, so why would I run the app? And there are a bunch of really cool apps that I could use, but they require root access, and AT&T blocks that. Those are my main reasons.

What updates in particular? If a new version of Android hits the market, if it isn't available before AT&T offers it, it would be available shortly after.

I've got all that taken care of. Instructions, etc. Now I'm just waiting for the microSD cards. They're currently in Windsor, CT. (I love online package tracking.)

I rooted my HTC EVO 4G and I get a lot of information from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1015 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1015)
I flashed a MikMik rom and he has a ton of "goodies" for the EVO 4G
At to updates, most developers create new roms, or update their current rom to include the OTA updates. Mik did this on the rom I am using, so although you cannot update with OTA it doesn't take these guys but a day to update
I really enjoy the different themes and looks that can be done after rooting, and now my battery life is incredible and got ride of all the bloatware that the manufactures put on the phone
Find your particular phone on XDA and have fun ;)

My experence with any of the 4 HTC made phones is they only last about 12-18 months before they crap out in variuos ways . Good luck !

I have not had a good experience with my HTC Merge, I am on my second phone and have had to factory reset it three times. I will be upgrading to the Motorola Electrify the next time US Cellular runs a phone sale. I doubt I will ever own another HTC after this.

My HTC EVO is over a year old and has survived being mounted to the bike in the Arctic Rockies, desert of Phoenix, LA, and all over the southeast USA. I probably jinx it since saying this. Its been mounted on the bike for a few thousand miles more than this now heh
