Where's Gumby?
« on: August 16, 2013, 04:02:04 PM »
Last year for my two week trip I had a thread that I posted on daily updating my whereabouts. I had planned on doing the same thing this year and this was going to be my ride.

I wanted to ride to Colorado, but life has thrown some curve balls (not in a bad way) and I am going to duck and roll with them.

I am still going to take my two week ride in August, but now I am not sure where to go. The only destination I have is Idaho Falls the last week of August. How do I get there is the question. Idaho Falls is a long days ride from my home town, or two pleasant short days. I have eight days to play with before I need to be there. I first had planned to go ride the North Cascade HWY and stay at my sisters cabin in Mazama for a few days. BUT, Last Sunday Mother Nature threw the kibosh on that plan. HWY 20 is closed due to mudslides.  :censored:

I am done with work for the day and I could have my bike loaded and on the highway in 15 minutes. I thought about riding around Mt. Rainier and then heading up 97 to HWY 2 camping along the way. Go check out Priest Lake in Northern Idaho, lolly gag around there for a day or two before I head South, but I was REALLY looking forward to riding the North Cascade HWY from Seattle. Do I sit around and wait for it to open or do I get on my bike and go?

My family likes to follow along with me as I am riding, and this forum gives them that opportunity. Hence the thread, "Where's Gumby".

I might just wake up in the middle of the night and decide to head South, who knows.

Life's good my friends, hope to see you out on the road.

Well, I did not go South.  ;D

I decided to stick around the house and have one more steak cooked on the Traeger before I hit the road for 14 days. I will probably slab it up to Seattle tomorrow, spend some time with my family, and hope that HWY 20 is open Monday morning.

Gumby, your route does not show Idaho Falls?
Aren't you coming by the National?

Yes, that map is for the ride I was going to do this year, but the Nationals dictated otherwise.  ;D

My timing was way off the ferry schedule this morning.  :'(

So I went 30 miles West to cross the river.

Made it to Kirkland to spend an evening with my favorite nephew.

300 mile trip to Kirkland.

And unfortunately the North Cascades is closed till further notice. There was a rather large mudslide across the high way. The EPA doesn't want the mud and dirt thrown over the side of the road so they are dump trucking the mud and dirt to another location.

My question is if the highway wasn't there just how did the EPA plan on  dealing with the mud and dirt that would have gone down the side of the hill anyways?
I don't always ride a street bike. But when I do, it's a Concours. Ride safely my friend.

HWY 20 is suppose to open at 10:00AM today, so I'm heading your way Tim.

I have mapped out a ride that will not put me over that way until well after 10:00. Day 2 Ride
Ride the Mukilteo to Clinton ferry, all the way up Whidbey Island, over Decepetion Pass to get to the West side of HWY 20. My brother-n-law told me to go ride up scenic Chuckanut Dr, then loop back around 542 to 9 that will take me back to 20, and off to Mazama I go.  ;D

I was on time for the ferry this morning.

It took me almost 4 hours to get to the North side of Deception Pass. So I skipped the Chuckanut loop. I jumped on 20 and never looked back. Seattle traffic!  >:( keep it.

From Marblemount to Rainy Pass I had the road to myself, and I don't need to tell anybody what this machine can do to the look on your face  ;D

I am gonna have to run back over the hill to see if going East to West is as much fun. Then I will go find some other roads cause I'm going to hang out in this little section of paradise for a few days.

Thanks M & D

I am going to stick around paradise one more day before I hit the road for Priest Lake tomorrow. Saturday I am thinking of riding some where South of Missoula. Then I have a nice ride Sunday into Idaho Falls.

None of this is written in concrete.  ;D
