Replace rim strips automatically with tubes? Yes/no
« on: June 18, 2011, 07:22:58 PM »
First time tube type replacement, 1982 CB125S, 700 miles, original tires/tubes/rim strips. Excellent shape all, holds air fine. Tubes, $9USD each, rim strips, $2USD each, front tire$21USD, rear tire $25USD. I'm leaning towards replacing everything as its so inexpensive compared to what I'm used to with my other bikes. I've got a HF tire changer, should be a bit easier than changing out the Concours tires.

I know. I figured I'd buy new stuff, use the old tubes and strips and have new ones in case I nick a tube installing or if after 29 years of being inflated when reinflated after install won't hold air after a few days.

Replace everything including the rim strip. On that small of wheel just use some tire spoons, not screw drivers and a thin piece of plastic for a rim protector. I inflate the tube gently before installing then leave the air valve core out. Pull the valve stem through the rim hole, put a nut on but leave a few threads showing. This helps to prevent stress on the tube and air valve stem.

I don't like to use lube as it usually just causes rust and these tires are really easy to put on.  I find a plastic garbage can is good for a work stand.

Just pulled the wheels apart on my 72 CB175 for cleaning of the hub, spokes and rim. Got the spokes soaking now and the rim has it's turn in the rust remover.

Trying to resist polishing the aluminium hub as that's a slippery slope. Will see how it looks after a cleaning soak.

The U.K. guys were complaining because they said the tires I want to use are harder than most to install. I'm sure they are doing it by hand and don't have a changer. The tires are Michelin M62 Gazelles. 2.75-18 and 3.00-17 and are mostly considered moped tires in these parts as they simply don't sell bikes like that here in the U.S. anymore for the street. I don't like the tread pattern but they are the only tires I could find that were exact sizes for replacement that were a matched set. The rims and spokes have a bit of pitting but they are certainly very presentable and not worth spending the money to relace and rechrome or replace. Thanks. Pics to follow in a few weeks.
