Title: Snow!!!
Post by: Conrad on October 29, 2019, 06:25:05 AM
Oh hell no! It's WAY too early for this. We woke up to an inch or so of that cold wet stuff this morn.  :'(

The dogs liked it at least.

Wow.  Here I am just lamenting having no bike in the best riding weather all year (well, between the occasional rain).

My folks are due West of you in Clinton, IA.  I saw photos of snow from their area this morning.  I kinda snickered a little bit.  Hope it goes away and you get a few more weeks of riding in.

Thanks Bruce.

The forecast isn't looking too good. More snow tonight and 2 to 4 inches tomorrow. Crap! I'm not ready to put the bike away!

Total of 8-12" here in S Denver over the last 3 days. But should clear out this morning when we share more of it with Conrad & friends. Sorry Conrad (kind of), but we're done with it...    ;D

New record low last night, 3 degrees. & new record expected tonight. But it's supposed to be nicer this weekend & next week. Might get to ride some.

I was riding out this morning in a balmy 6 degrees c  (43 f) the  weather was beautiful and sunny, however a cold wind meant that despite good thermal clothing I headed for home at midday ..... my old bones were beginning to complain    ;)

I read on the internet that global warming is going to bring on the next ice age. :o
Which is why the scientists have never referred to it as "Global Warming".
The press, especially the "we just make **** up" press use the phrase "Global Warming".

Scientists use the phrase "Climate Change" as in some areas it'll get warmer, in some cooler, in others the swings between cold and warm will be more extreme, and in others less extreme.

We know, it's just fun to make fun!  They have FINALLY switched to calling it "climate change."  Of course, their current "oh-so-accurate" stupid phrase is "common sense", as if they had any (common sense people know that criminals don't follow laws).

Well, the globe we live on is warming.  In fact, if I were you Max, I'd be thinking about moving in the next 50 years or so to stay dry or you'll need to be fitting pontoons to that C14 of yours.  With that being said, if the world goes into an ice age instead, then skis would be more appropriate.

Ice ages are triggered by Antarctic sea ice rising, study ...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/ice-ages

The problem is that the ice is MELTING. Do you understand that? MELTING. What ice is there is rising as the ocean water levels increase.

A quote from Faux News.

"Upside-down "rivers" of warm ocean water may be one of the causes of Antarctica's ice shelves breaking up, leading to a rise in sea levels. A new study suggests that, in the past, increases in Antarctic sea ice in colder climates may have contributed to ice ages."

Read that a couple of times, maybe it'll sink in. The sentence is referring to TWO very different events. The ice is melting, got it?

We had at least 8" of snow here yesterday.

I had to read the damn water meters in that crap! (I'm the meter reader in our lil town) I turned in my resignation yesterday and gave them three months to find someone else to do the job.

I grew up is S Illinois (Newton) and lived in Rockford from '91-'98. Still go back to Rockford a week each summer to visit friends. Might have to swing by & say "Hi" & buy you a beer.

What happened to the censoring software on this site that is suppose to replace four letter words like the title of this thread with “****”?

Joking aside, why is ther such a large percentage of active members on this site from the same 2 states... Illinois and Virginia? I actually check both states. Grew up in Illinois and live in Virginia. Most of my family is still in central IL so I go back for visits, but do my best to avoid winter visits there!

Winter here is a joke. First forecast of snow and everyone freaks out. Never seen a response like I’ve seen here to the possibility of snow, despite if we actually get any or not.

To someone used to heavier winters and can drive in inclement weather, this basically is a nothing by comparison.  However, you can be the best driver in the world during those events and get taken out by a maroon at any time which is why I don't travel whilst it's snowing/icing here.

As to the software, I'll have to take a look and see what's up with that.  I think I've seen the settings somewhere around.  Ok, I've relocated the settings and it's a manual process to add them in.  With that being said, I'd take a really dim view (Jimmymac) on going back and forth adding them in manually.  A bad humour that would put me in.  However, I will research George Carlin and his 5 7 words and make sure they're there.

We just got back from 11 days on the beach in Destin Florida. We had the RV and camped at Henderson Beach state park. If you've ever been there you know what a great park this is.

Drove home from our son's house in Tennessee yesterday in a freakin blizzard! Into the wind the whole way, 7.5 mpg.  :o The RV is incased in a mess of salt and slush that hardened to concrete overnight in the below zero temps.    :'(

It was nice while it lasted.   8)

Snow? Wassat? ;D
In the UK we get maybe ½" every few years or so, but when it does fall, the roads are closed, the trains don't run, and the newspapers start talking about Arctic conditions  :loco: :banghead: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
It'd be funny as faq (censor that software!!) if it wasn't so pathetic.
I lived in northern Sweden (north of the Arctic Circle) for a few months and their trains run, their people drive to work and nobody even notices the snow.
A normal winter days is -35C/-31F, 12' of snow, and 70Mph winds creating snow drifts that bury houses, which is why all houses there have exterior doors on all 4 sides. That way ya can't get snowed in.
Down here they have NO IDEA what Arctic Conditions really means.

This was the first time that I drove the RV in a storm, I hope that it's the last.

We had to slow WAY down from the 70mph posted limit. At one point I was driving at ~45 on an overpass and the rear wheels broke loose and the RV started to drift to the left. THAT will get your attention in a hurry. It's amazing how fast your body will react to the surge of adrenaline. Pucker you right up it will.  :o

If you think that gives you the puckers, do it in a salt truck!

Having driven a DOT salt/plow truck, during the worst winter in Ohio history as a "second job";, I can safely say with 15 tons of salt and a spreader, on the big dumper, and a mega ton plow up front... there was no more COMFORTABLE vehical I have ever driven in the snow.. If it "broke traction", (which I never had happen), you were screwed... the rural area I was doing, had some 30% grades, and even then, burying that plow would stop the dumper dead in it's tracks..

Now I know why when the Zombie Appocolypse comes round, I want one...

Luckily I escaped the snow of late 1968 in the UK as my father was medivac'd back to the States from RAF Sculthorpe before that time.  We had a bus that took us to school in Lakenheath and I understand it got snow bound/stuck at some point.  Glad we weren't on it and back in the US.

With that being said, plans are being put in place to visit beginning May of 2020.  Haven't been back in over 50 years.  I hope nothing has changed.

yeah, tell that to the dude that got canned, whom I replaced for part time work from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m, it took 3 excavators, and 10 people onsite, to extract that biotch... then another crew had to come in, and remove the 8 tons of salt, because it happened in a valley with a "protected watershed"... EPA, ODOT, all sorts of fed and State boys on site.. real clusterfark....

I can't even begin to fathom what that dude was thinking, when he ran it off the road... good weed I suspect...  anyways, I earned enough $$$$ to buy a new ford plw truck, and buy a ford tractor with a snow blade and bucket, to remove snow locally when plow trucks had no place to "push" snow.... that winter. blizzard of '77-'78 in N.E Ohio.

If it never happened, I would never have learned to ski... I bought gear, and cross country skid across town, went downhill skiing 3 times a week, trained for the Olympic team, and always "loved snow"...  We have not seen epic snow like that for many years, but have had some epic "3 day events", which never totaled the 6 to 8 foot accumulations which we had back then, when the temps never rose above 30*F for 45 days..  we simply had no place to "throw" the snow.
