A Good Freind Gone
« on: January 03, 2013, 03:24:48 AM »
I ask that everyone please pray for the family of a good friend of mine.  He was killed Monday on his police bike responding to a call when a lady pulled out in front of him at an intersection.  This was a guy who would do anything for you.  He would give you the last bottle of water on earth if he had it and you asked him for it.  And now he will be missed on our camping trips and our yearly motorcycle trips.    At 35, he left behind his wife and 3 young children amongst all the other family.  Very sad time.

If anybody would like to read any of the stories, you can google Officer Chris Yung.  He worked for Prince William PD in Virginia.  There are many stories.  You can pick which one you read.

Thanks

Very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend.

If he was responding to a "call", then can we assume there were lights and maybe sirens involved, and the driver still didn't see him?  Wow.

I saw that on the local news.  Very sad indeed.  :'(

There was something on TV the other day about 'not seeing' things because you aren't looking for them.  It was one of those brain teaser shows.  They had people in animal suits walking through the scene and very few saw them until they were pointed out to the audience.  It's very real and scary, if you ask me.  MC have been around for over a hundred years and they still aren't treated as vehicles by many drivers.  I've started doing a weave when I see a left turner in front of me and it still puts me on edge, though.

It's also difficult to hear a siren with the windows up and the radio on or have earbuds listening to a portable MP3 player.  I'm seeing more of that these days.

With us, I hope, we're more alert than a normal cage driver (even when driving the cage) as we're on the lookout for people out to get us.   At least, that's the way I feel when driving my cage and bike.

Really sad  :(

Before I retired I was on a quiet country road with an intersection. marked bike with blues and two's going, and a car pulled straight out on me   ( and I was only doing about 30mph)

I felt it would do more good to stop and advise him.... and he said  'sorry I didn't see you'

I had the right of way , he was at a give way .

There but for the grace of god , as they say

Sorry to hear this.  Thoughts and prayers for his family, and it sounds like he was an asset to the community and his department.

So Sorry to hear about your friend. Many prayers to you and his familt in the time of struggle. Such a grim reminder that the world is filled with those who look but do not see, those who listen but do not hear and those who touch but do not feel. May God's grace be with all who are affected.
Life is good.... At least from my perspective.

Sad thing to hear Zak.  I work for Prince William County and can tell you its a big deal when something horrible like this happens.  The community has really pulled together to offer their support and funds for the family.  This was one of the many well-known and frindly officers of our county - his brother is on the force too.  Most of you have probably read a news article or two and read this also.  Some things are kind of being not published by the media.  Prince William and Fairfax Counties are both like this.  Very hush-hush (usually for good reason).

Both the officer and the minivan had a green light.  The officer had his lights and siren on, going straight thru the light.  The minivan had a 70yo mother driving with her 47yo daughter as the passenger (I think I got the ages right).  The minivan driver did the classic left turn across traffic directly into his path.  Route 28 is about 6 lanes wide in this area and is a large area to scan with your eyes.  The impact produced a fire that engulfed both vehicles in flames.  Bystanders administered CPR until he was taken to the hospital where he passed.

For some reason there have been no public mention of any charges to the minivan driver - yet.  No matter how you look at it, its a very bad story for everyone.  Me personally, I think she just plain old didn't see him.  Probably no cell phone or texting while driving like most of the news article comments reflect.

Be safe out there.
