Value of New & Used bikes
« on: March 07, 2020, 09:37:59 AM »
I currently joined the site recently looking for a Concours to go with my 2019 Goldwing Tour as a second bike, I also joined a FJR group to check out that bike also. What I’m noticing is all of us believe our bikes are worth  more than the market will bare.  New bikes are way down in sales throughout all the makes in the industry, but especially in the sport/tour market. I test rode a new 2018 from a dealer a couple days ago, In talking with him I asked why he’d didn’t have any 19’s or 20’s his response was I can’t sell a 18 so I’m not going to inventory a newer one,  I have heard this from two dealers now 😢  They are pricing these bikes way down as new just trying to move them, so reality is used pricing will take a hit. I have noticed both with the FJR & Concours bikes for sale on the sites have set for long periods of time with no sale?  Reality is unless we find buyers by chance that are looking for something that has are special Farkels, it’s going to be tough to move. I totally understand with the money spent on extras are hope is to get some of that back, but it’s rare.  What I’m seeing is, unless we are willing to get near dealer trade value, it’s probably going to sit on the market for some time. Believe me I see that in the Goldwing market also.

Exactly. Why not buy a cheap used one from the private owner? Forget the dealer. The used market is always saturated with good used C10s and C14s for very little money. Wait out on the owners who think their bikes are worth more. They will break down in time.

Or they'll just keep them because they can't get close to what they want.  I hardly ride my 09 C14 but I'll probably keep it forever because it's worth less than what I'll part with it for.   :)

This  :goodpost: .

As long as you are still riding and you don't need the ~2X6 foot storage area, I say keep it. If you have to, or want to quit riding, then
obviously it's value to you goes down, and you must decide if you want to strip the farkles and sell them separate or just toss 'em in
with the bike sale and be done with it.

Now as to the purpose of the original poster...??? other than being Captain Obvious? If you're trying to talk the price down on a group that obviously likes the bike, that's not gonna work.
You join this group to learn about a bike and to look for farkling and maintenance ideas, not for finding someone selling cheap. I imagine the same over at the FJR group.
Sure you may actually find someone that decides quickly that the bike isn't for them and just wants it gone and prices it accordingly, but that's pretty rare.

I understand what your saying, but reality is are they serious about selling.  Take a look at all the bikes that have been for sale for months if not a year, seems to be obvious they aren’t serious or delirious as to the value of the bike.  Would be interesting to see of the ones that have sold, what they really sold for. Two thoughts involved here one is the seller doesn’t want his time wasted by lowball offers and two the buyer is looking for someone who is legitimately looking to sell. Both can feel it’s a waste of time.

I guess I'm a little slow but was there an actual question here?

No question. Just some commentary and hoping to get a cheap bike somewhere on the site!

MichiganRider,

I would have hoped that you joined the ZG forum to find out about the C10 and C14, not start posting about things we already know and have observed.

To Gpink's point, I'm not sure MichiganRider what you want members of this forum to do for you.

Please post something relevant. Members here have been extremely helpful to me and my C10 journey.

It’s always interesting to me how we’re not allowed to create a general discussion, which is what I did and some want to take things in a negative direction, that was not my intent at all. I will say I’m sorry to those who took offense. Sorry to have bothered you.  It will be my last post.

Thanks for the discussion to those I didn’t offend.

Me neither.  It is just an observation- one I probably agree with, that sellers generally overvalue their bikes.  I probably would too- seeing I paid something like $17,000 OTD for mine (hard to compute, since I had trade-in with it).

The market is what it is.  Yes, mileage and condition do matter a lot on the used market (as do maintenance logs and other factors).  Blue book is a usable reference, but, ultimately, it is worth what people will pay for it.  I paid more because I wanted a particular color and more because I didn't want to drive hundreds of miles to a non-local seller.  Same thing if I was shopping used.  I might pay less if it had "farkles" that I would have to remove, especially if it damaged the bike (holes drilled, harnesses spliced) or the original parts were not included.  I might pay more if it included farkles that are now hard or impossible to get that I would want (like the canyon cages).  I would definitely pay more if it had an active factory warranty, especially with the option to extend it.

I am a Michigan Rider myself and am always watching bikes for sale and values.

I thought this was a good topic to start a thread on and not sure why some got snippy over it.

To the OP - this is the back end of the winter madness that seems to set in each year at this time on the forum, so . . . .

Don't let this be your last post due to this.

Nothing wrong with the topic. I'm not sure why the OP took offense over someones opinion that didn't agree with his and decided not to continue the conversation. If stating an opinion is grounds for for being called out this will go the way of another forum I used to enjoy.

I can see how a new guy coming in and getting responses like these might seem off putting, making him just want to move on.

I just didn't understand the push back.

His post was accurate about relevant conditions, and I thought it was a worthy topic.

If I didn't, I wouldn't feel its for me to tell him it wasn't and would just stop reading and move on.

Well crap, I guess I started it off, the push back that is. I was just trying to understand his goal here, not cause a problem. It seemed as though he was trying to talk someone here down in price and I thought that can't be it. More likely, I thought, I'm not picking up on his goal.

Apologies MichiganRider, and all here.

M'R' best wishes in your search for a C14.

If this simple question was enough to get anyone's panties in a wad then all hope is gone.

In case all hope isn't really lost . . . .

The OP didn't pose a question in the first place, so the 'simple question' reply:

Quote
I guess I'm a little slow but was there an actual question here?

seems rhetorical and implied:  'so what, quit wasting our time.'

This can make newcomers not want to bother hanging around, counter productive to wanting others to come to this sandbox to share a common interest.

You want to hang out with bikers, but nobody gets kicked in the nuts? I don't think so...
I've seen chicks get pimp slapped too.
Did somebody wanna ride around here?

I've been holding my tongue a bit, but some people are just a bit too sensitive.  The way I took his initial remarks was that we want too much for our bikes and we shouldn't.  So I politely responded that we think they're worth more than they're really worth...   :)    A bit of mild "harassment" should not be a big deal.  Welcome to the internet.
