Title: Ancestry
Post by: Conrad on August 31, 2016, 05:05:59 AM
My wife subscribed to Ancestry.com and has been tracing her ancestry for a couple of months.

We both even sent in our DNA but the results aren't available yet.

She's traced her ancestors back 10 generations so far. It seems that she's related to Ellis Albert Swearengen (anyone watch Deadwood?).

She has found out a LOT of interesting info on her family. She'll work on mine once she gets hers completed. Some of her family may have been on the Mayflower.

Mine will be a bit more difficult since my biological father ran out on my mom when he found out that she was pregnant. I don't know anything about him other than his name. I'm looking forward to the info that comes back with my DNA profile. I'm not looking to find the asshole but I would like to know something about that side of my family.

I've been using it for awhile and have traced my father's side back to the 1600's in England.  Did the DNA thing (and now the NSA has everything they need) and the results are GB 46% (makes sense as Mom was full on English), Western European 26%, Ireland 15%, Scandinavia 6%, and trace amounts from Finland/Northwest Russia, Italy/Greece, and the Iberian Peninsula, with just a scoche of Pacific Islander (have no clue how that popped in.

Most of the DNA results make sense to me as the Vikings and Western Europe invaded England at some point in it's history.

It also put to bed the rumors in my family of native American Indian liaisons in the past as there isn't one iota of DNA that supports that.  Tried to tell other family members about that but they wouldn't believe the science.

Based on what I found out in Ancestry I was able to find my Great Great Grandfathers tombstone in Tennessee.  My family 'originated' in Bertie county NC and then moved westward into Van Buren County in TN.

Sorry about that C, went into your post and modified it by mistake.

Interesting. My sis had the fam do them and has been tracing . FOund similar results back to the 15 and 1600s in England, Germany, Swiss and France. Interesting findings but also fun to go to the gravesites here in Indiana 6 gens back. Had to be some of the first guys to break the Treaty of Greenville and encroach on Native soil. .  Lots of connections to the past and historical figures I would have never imagined we were related to....

When you start digging you don't know what will turn up and when it's unearthed it's very difficult to bury it again.

As far as ancestry?  As an American, what could possibly matter about one's ancestry?  I believe one's ancestry genetics are what they are, it shouldn't define who one is.  I can see where it could be entertaining, or even possibly have medical use in certain remote cases.  But I can't think of why it would be serious enough to be worried about it., much less in denial about something or wanting to bury it.

I'm not talking about DNA research as far as digging something up....it's the process of learning about your ancestors several generations back where you find the interesting information.

It's easy to imagine digging up something in your past that you'd perhaps rather not know. What if one of your ancestors was a serial killer or a child molester?

Or worse, what if you found out that you are related to Donald Trump?   :o

Yeah, I suppose.  But that is more about exact people.  I was thinking more about what you are getting with the DNA thing- which is just what geographical areas your ancestors were from.... I don't see how that would matter.

No, you aren't allowed to piggy back the same Clinton joke onto my Trump joke. No sir you'll have to get your own.    ;)

The DNA trace is about what geographical areas your ancestors were from but it's not just about that. It matches your family's lineage via the DNA hits but also by the family tree info that has been entered by others in the family. For instance, if you had a sister that you didn't know about (or your sister was switched at birth) and she sent her DNA in to be tested, it would be possible to find this sister by the DNA match. I've found several 2nd cousins that I knew nothing about. They have to come from my biological father's side. Once you have a DNA match with these other people you get hints as to where you might fit into their family tree and they into yours.

My wife has found my biological father and his (my) family. I already knew his name but I didn't have proof positive that it was him, till this morning. She found a late 1950's white page phonebook listing for him that puts him in the place of my birth around the time of my birth.

There you are asshole, but alas, he died back in 1982...

I do have some direct DNA hits for 2nd cousins in that family though.

All these ancestry things are nice, but how can they say that you are % such and such and % such and such when the only people they are comparing you to are only the people that have sent in their DNA, its not really a true test as not everyone in the whole world has been tested. You are only a percentage of just the people who have been tested by that agency. Just a thought that's all. I'm not a scientist.

Uh huh...

One of the things that does make it hard is that over this 5000 or so years  ;) the census takers in this county didn't do a very good job (imagine that, our government workers screwing things up). Some of the names were changed or misspelled by the census takers and that makes things much more difficult.

It's not just the census takers, it's the family members giving the information.  They named themselves whatever name they were using at the time, at least with my relatives.  If someone was known with a nickname, that's what they told the census people.

A bit of useless info. My Mom's cousin did some digging in her side of the family tree, and has traced it back to 1687. French Settlers came to South Africa, seeking new opportunities back then.

Bare in mind that the first Europeans here were Dutch, and settled here in 1652.

The cousin has forwarded everyone that is still alive a copy of the family tree, which is in it's 12th generation since the French settled here in the late 1600's.

He has actually travelled to France as well,. to do some more research, and has found that we are actually descendants of the Cardinal de' Richelieu.

I know how that 'popped in' but it would take a few drawings and a LOT of 'Easy Boys!'

My ancestry goes back at least 400,000 years and I am related to just about everyone living on the planet right now. I am not entirely pleased with that fact but what can I do? Besides, we are all in the same boat no matter which system you believe in: if you follow the creation idea, we are all related. If you follow the evolution thought, it is current scientific belief that at one point, the species that would become "us" was down to a gene pool of less than 600 beings.... meaning again that we are all related. The idea does have a couple of interesting dimensions: if correct, I am related to Adolph Hitler, Mao, Ted Bundy, Joseph Lucas (A.K.A. The Prince of Darkness) et al. .... but I am also related to Fermi, 'Big Al', Leibniz, Copernicus and that guy who invented the wheel.

Brian

For years and years my wife's family claimed that there was a Native American someplace in the family tree. After sending in her DNA that claim has been debunked. What she did find out was that one of her relatives was abducted by a Native American tribe but then released in a prisoner exchange of some kind. That info wasn't from her DNA record of course but she found it out in her research.
