I believe that it's fairly difficult/impossible to prepare for every instance of stupidity and stupid behavior. Just when you think that you're prepare for idiocy along comes a more idiotic idiot to throw a wrench into the works.

Case in point. Look at what's happening today in this country. Who could have anticipated and prepared for this?

Well I guess it depends on what exactly/specifically that is happening in this country that you are referring to. If it is the pandemic..then....

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/obama-pandemic-playbook/

I've probably steered this thread into the sword's direction...but honestly I was just trying to answer Mr. C's question.
If this thread heads towards lock up, then my apologies to all  :'(, if not then thanks for everyone's restraint.

You're right. A pandemic was planed for by the previous administration, despite the lies to the contrary by the current administration. So yes, a pandemic can be planned for.

What couldn't have been foreseen is the stupidity of the populace over how to deal with the virus. I'm talking about how a simple medical mask has been made into a political statement instead of a way to show your patriotism and to protect your fellow citizens. I'm talking about the stupidity of people taking advice from 'experts' who seem to be parrots of the current administration. Filling their heads with what they want to hear. Not the truth but something else, something far more dangerous.

Agreed- doing anything that encourages humans' natural <bad> pack behavior is always a bad idea IME. Not blaming COG and it is probably just a feature of the new software but allowing any degree of elevation to another always turns into a weapon, again IME.

The new software looks pretty nice and has some nice features; the new private messaging system is now under the term 'conversation' and the slick part is a conversation can include more than one person. Further, any member of the conversation can add other members if that is how the owner of the conversation set it up. I have not used the one on COG but I have used it on another forum and it really works well, almost a self- selected sub- forum for specific things that would not be of interest to the main group, such as local events and similar. This software package is supposed to ease integration between the forum and the other facets of the COG on-line presence so it should be a big step forward for those who have to actually run the site.

I don't know, I've checked it out a bit to see how it looked but I didn't dig in very deep. You may have more time on it than I do.
Time will tell but if it is as you say...oh boy.   That's all they ("we" since I'm a member/officer sorta) need is some ingrained points system
to define who walks on water and who's flash is better (based on fanboys offering up points instead of data). It may deserve a second one...

Well, there have been ~10,000 acres of woodland burned and I STILL do not know the gender of the baby! They shoulda' used a bigger smoke generator I guess.....

As far as charges, there is legal precedent in a virtually identical case where people were both fined as well as sentenced to jail (prison?) terms. I have to believe charges will be forthcoming.....

You're right. A pandemic was planed for by the previous administration [...]  So yes, a pandemic can be planned for.   What couldn't have been foreseen is the stupidity of the populace over how to deal with the virus.

No plan included all the complexities of COVID-19.  Although in many ways it was like a super-flu, which we have experience with, it defied so many assumptions and acted quite differently than anything seen before.  So many aspects of any such plan wouldn't have been very relevant.  We are STILL learning new stuff regularly, even after 6 to 10 months into it.

I have never had a login on COG, nor looked at it much.  But I did just look...  This score being mentioned is just the number of "likes" posts get.  Typically, posts will also list WHO liked it.  Not all that uncommon on forums.  I can see both good and bad with allowing visible (to others) "likes" on postings, listing who liked it.  Even more issues if it also includes "dislikes."  I tend to not like public "liking" because it can be more of a tribe or mob-mentality.  But private liking (only you see the likes you placed on postings, and the total likes YOU gave to people) would be pretty safe in all situations.  It would help you identify like-minded or helpful people you might want to meet or whatnot.

Like all the forums that use this feature that I have seen, the new COG forum publicly shows the number of likes and who liked the post.

It might be even worse not having a 'dislike' button as a lack of likes could be construed as dislikes. As Marty said, it quickly becomes a weaponized tool used en mass to pound on 'the chosen one'.

WTF is wrong with people? Damn attention whores!!!!

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/07/us/california-fire-el-dorado-gender-reveal-trnd/index.html

A gender reveal sparked a wildfire in California that's grown to 7,000 acres

As multiple wildfires burn in California, one of the fires was started during a gender-reveal party, officials said.

A "smoke generating pyrotechnic device" used at the party caused the El Dorado Fire in San Bernardino County, Cal Fire said in a press release.

The fire started Saturday at 10:23 a.m. at the El Dorado Ranch Park in Yucaipa and spread from the park north on to Yucaipa Ridge, according to the release.

It has since grown to 7,050 acres as of early Monday morning, the Cal Fire incident website shows.

Evacuations have been ordered for the communities of Oak Glen, Yucaipa Ridge, Mountain Home Village and Forest Falls. An evacuation warning is in effect for the Yucaipa bench area and Yucaipa Community Center is being used as a temporary evacuation facility, according to Cal Fire.

More than 500 personnel have been deployed to the fire, along with 60 engines and four helicopters, according to the website.

Overnight weather is expected to remain hot and dry with a relative humidity of 20%, San Bernardino National Forest said in it's evening update on the fire. Winds will also continue at three to five miles per hour with gust up to 10 miles per hour, resulting in "active fire behavior throughout the night."

No charges have been announced in the blaze.

A firefighter has died in the wildfire caused by these idiots and their gender reveal BS.    :(

https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-09-18/forest-service-firefighter-died-in-california-wildfire

The death toll from California’s unprecedented 2020 firestorms rose to 26 after officials announced the death of a firefighter battling the El Dorado fire in San Bernardino County, a blaze sparked by a pyrotechnics from a gender-reveal party.

Few details were immediately available about the death Thursday, and the firefighter’s name had not been released. On Friday, residents in the San Bernardino Mountains area lined the highway in respect as the fallen firefighter was escorted from the fire zone.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and fellow firefighters during this time,” the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement released Friday.

The fire broke out Sept. 7 near Yucaipa and is 66% contained. Officials said it was caused by a smoke-emitting pyrotechnic device that was part of a gender-reveal party in a park. Such devices typically shoot off blue or pink smoke to signal the gender of an expected child.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department could not say whether the family whose stunt sparked the fire would be charged in the death, nor have they been identified.

“If investigative reports are filed with our office, we will review all facts, evidence, statements and reports to determine what criminal charges, if any, need to be filed,” San Bernardino County Dist. Atty. Jason Anderson said in a statement Sept. 9, the Associated Press reported.

In Riverside County, the fast-moving Snow fire, started by a vehicle, prompted evacuations near Palm Springs after doubling in size overnight. It was 0% contained.

The El Dorado fire is not the first wildfire sparked by a gender-reveal party. A 2017 fire in Arizona that burned 47,000 acres and caused more than $8 million in damage was set off by an exploding, powder-blue target.

The death in the Yucaipa blaze is the 26th attributed to a California wildfire since August and the third among firefighters in that same span.

On Aug. 19, a firefighting helicopter on a water-dropping mission crashed in Fresno County, killing the pilot, Michael John Fournier, 52, of Rancho Cucamonga.

Firefighter Diane Jones, 63, was fatally injured Aug. 31 while battling the Tatham fire in Tehama County, which was part of the sprawling August Complex fire north of the Bay Area — now considered the largest in California’s modern history.

The largest concentration of fire deaths have been in Butte County, where the North Complex fire swept through a rural region. At least 15 residents were killed.

The victims who have been identified range widely in age: from 16 to 79. Most lived in Berry Creek, a mountain hamlet northeast of Oroville, while two hailed from nearby Feather Falls.

Many simply could not get out before the fire hit.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said Thursday evening that only one person reported missing is still unaccounted for — a promising sign the death toll might not climb higher.

“Our efforts to really get out and start searching areas has increased dramatically,” he said during a briefing, adding: “Because we’re covering a lot more ground, and that number [of fatalities] is staying steady, that gives me some hope.”

They should be held criminally and financially (good luck) responsible, man and woman both sterilized to prevent future occurances, any existing children taken from them (they are obviously too stupid to raise them properly.

Or maybe just take them up in a helicopter and drop them into the fire.

That article says they had to call a "rotator" truck to rescue the mobile home.  That's basically a crane truck.  I bet (I HOPE) it cost him $5000 to get that done.

And since stupidity truly IS an unlimited supply, here's yet another whack-job attempting to remove himself from the breeding pool:

DeKALB - A DeKalb man is facing multiple felony charges after police arrested him in connection to reports of gunfire on Ridge Drive early Tuesday morning after an investigation at his apartment where they found spent shell casings and a loaded gun.

In a news release late Tuesday night, DeKalb Acting Police Chief Bob Redel announced police had made an arrested in the shooting, which police believe was aimed at an unoccupied car.

Maurice Shaw, 44, of DeKalb is charged with armed habitual criminal, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition without a firearm owners identification Card (FOID) and unlawful Possession of a fun without a FOID card.

If convicted of the most serious offense, being an armed habitual criminal, Shaw could face up to 30 years in jail.

According to the news release, DeKalb police responded to reports of gun shots around 4:35 a.m. in the 900 block of Ridge Drive, and upon arrival, discovered bullet fragments and broken glass around the area.

Police used security camera footage from around the area and identified a suspect vehicle and person of interest, later identified as Shaw. During the investigation, police found the car from the camera footage in the 1100 block of Varsity Boulevard.

During a search of the car, police discovered one used shell casing and broken glass inside the car. Police also obtained a warrant to search Shaw's apartment in the area, and during the search found additional shell casings, ammunition and a loaded gun.

There was no reported damage to the other car which police believe was the target of the gunfire, and no reported injuries during the incident.

Shaw was arrested Tuesday and taken to the DeKalb County Jail, where he'll await a bond hearing at the DeKalb County courthouse Wednesday at 1 p.m. No booking photo of Shaw was made available Tuesday evening, Redel said.

According to the news release, Shaw's arrest was the second arrest made by DeKalb police Tuesday related to gunfire. Juan Franco, 27, of Sycamore was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and violation of a firearm concealed carry act after police say he fired a gun into the air in the Burritoville parking lot.

Let the above be a lesson to wanna be gang bangers.

When attempting a drive by shooting be SURE that your car window is open BEFORE shooting through it.

 :rotflmao:

I'll bet those shots were pretty damned loud inside of that car!
