Speaking of meat, what is corned beef? How about pastrami?

It is meat :)
Meat is the flesh of a mammal.  Pig and cow certainly fit that bill.

I use the traditional and culinary definition of "meat."  Check a typical menu next time- you are likely to see "Meat, Poultry, Seafood" as entrees.  If asked if I eat meat, I say "no, I don't."  Then comes "So you are a vegetarian?"  To which I respond, "No, I do eat poultry and occasionally some fish, but no other seafood, so I am not a vegetarian."  Then, of course, the last question, "why?" which is easy "because I don't like it."

At some point during my life, it seemed many have redefined "meat" as "flesh of an animal" instead of "flesh of a mammal."  Kinda like people keep trying to redefine "castration" as "neuter", which it is not (I am sure you have heard "spay or neuter your pet" which makes no sense, it should be "spay or castrate your pet" or better yet, just "neuter your pet").

I will ignore the rest of your post because.... gross :) ;)

Well, if you were to happen to be at my home and a meal was going to be served, be assured that I would do what was needed to provide you with a reasonable (read: not just 'eat the vegetables and bread stuffing that we are already having') meal not containing any meat or meat products. That would include of course looking up recipes and going to a food store or two if practical, such as we had some warning. Without warning, we would do whatever we could to provide what non- meat containing foods as we had available and of course ask you what you may want of the choices available. I live in a world where such simple difference can and should be accommodated, and it would not occur to me to try and 'convert' you or even mock you for your beliefs, at least not beyond the obvious joking but in pure fun, without any agenda. Your beliefs and choices in areas such as eating preferences do not effect me in any way and they are certainly anything that should serve as a basis to distance ourselves. Far from it- a couple of posts ago I spoke about Kashrut law (Jewish dietary law) and know a surprising amount about that as I am not Jewish, I merely find it absolutely fascinating as a way of life and so have payed attention when in the company of those who may educate me on their practices. I would love to study Islam in the same way but have not found myself in the company of anyone learned in those practices, and 'rank and file' Muslims that I do know are really pretty ignorant of their religion's tenants, just as most Christians are ignorant of theirs.

I wish you a fair wind and a safe harbor in your journey (seriously, not sarcastically).

The aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41, the full sized carrier, NOT the escort carrier of the same name that was sunk in WWII, CVE-63) was the first aircraft carrier that could not transit the Panama canal because she was too wide. It is interesting to note that the Iowa class battleships, the largest built by the US, had a max. beam of 108.5 ft. to allow them to transit the Panama canal, which has a vessel width limit of 110 ft. Betcha' they needed some touch-up paint after the trip though.

Because of this limitation, the US has basically built a 'two ocean' navy, built around aircraft carriers that remain on the east or west sides of the US for their entire lives. They can and do travel to the 'other' ocean on occasion but this is a long and costly voyage, with an entire carrier group of ships, around the tip of South America.

The Suez canal is an option that's been taken many times by US Naval forces.  The USS Nimitz is one such warship.   There are size limitations of course and some naval craft have to go the long way around.  This limitation does not affect our long range bombers, however.

And with said bombers, could we not widen the canal?  8)

That solution wouldn't help the locks very much.

Locks...we don't need no stinkin locks. How long would it take the oceans to balance?

I'm sure there is a mathematical solution to that question, even though I work with math all day at work, that's a bit far advanced for me. :)

Especially since the orbit of the moon would have some affect on the balancing which would probably never end.

Significantly I would think...LOL especially in carpet bombing mode.

I've been thinking, could bombs really be the solution to many of our problems? ;D

Give that man a cheroot. Any east / west canal open to both oceans would never 'balance' but instead create tremendous velocities due to tidal action. Especially on any planet where its satallites are locked into 'tidal lock' as our moon is in relationship to Earth.

Especially since the orbit of the moon would have some affect on the balancing which would probably never end.

Seems like it would work out as long as you could finish the passage before the tide turned.

So just bomb the locks and allow nature to scour out the rest to whatever size you need!  Would make for some fast transport, too- as long as you are going the "correct" direction at the time.

Why not use your 7000 nukes to carve a channel from Houston to LA?
That would work. If you do it on the Mexican border it could replace Trumps wall with a nice radioactive moat.

The Panama canal is a fee based method of passage. The fee, or toll, is based on the weight of the object transiting. The greatest fee paid to date was for the MOL Benefactor, a ship with a nominal 113,042 gross ton displacement. The lowest fee ever paid was ever paid was $0.36 in 1928. The lowest toll was for Richard Halliburton, an American, who swam the canal.

Privately owned vessels can and do transit the canal. The toll for a small vessel is typically between $800 and $3,200 and those vessels share lock spare with a larger vessel as operating the canal exclusively for such small vessels is not affordable.

Ewwwww....makes me wonder what the sewage discharge requirements are (if any) for ships going through the canal. I guess they'd empty the tanks before entering just to lower the cost
of passage but some of it must get in. Like swimming in a oil fouled toilet bowl I'd imagine.

Man swims the Panama canal and Marty wonders how much e coli was in there with him.  ;D  I doubt any ships empty waste in the canal, it is not a long trip time- wise and making the water toxic along the way would be horrible for the locals, or at least I would think. Panama is in the tropics so.....  Cruise ships treat their waste and are have specific places where that stuff goes, and most working ships have so few crew, for the tonnage of the ship, that it just should not be a problem to [not dump] the holding tank(s). I think the only thing to leave any toxic waste in the canal might have been Mr. Halliburton himself and he was always kinda' moving away from said waste so not too much of a problem.

Gee Marty, would you ask Edmund Hillary if he ran into any bird droppings up there?    :rotflmao: two times

Trusting ships and crews to do the right thing....LOL.  I guess they're so clean that they dump before they get to the canal..  Hmm I wonder where that overabundance of oil came from on the Delaware and MD beaches came from....Space Aliens!  Most likely.  Either that or law abiding ships I guess.
