Title: FREE RIDER TRAINING - Advanced Cornering Clinic, Quantico Va.
Post by: Barry on June 28, 2011, 07:26:47 PM
To all,

Last week I attended my first (but NOT my last) FREE Advanced Cornering Clinic sponsored FOR FREE by Quantico Drivers Training at Camp Upshur, Marine Corps Base Quantico.

The events are open to current military, former military, dependants, and contractors in DoD, Law Enforcement, and the Intelligence Community.

The intent is to provide free, expert training to make people safer riders.  This is NOT a track day.  If you do track days or race, you will be right at home, and the event is loosely similar to a MSF ERC in that you are on your bike, riders are coaching you standing on course and riding (think control riders).

Being that I said it is not a track day, it is NOT the MSF either.  This is high-performance riding.  On my supermoto race bike, I ran easily 60+mph in straights.  They emphasize braking, turn-in, line selection, etc.

Days are broken into SPORTBIKE (Thursday), and they allow supermotos in with the sportbikes, and CRUISER and OTHER bikes (Friday).

Gear required is on the website, but it's over the ankle boots, DOT helmet, gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection.

If you use a street legal bike, you need license, registration, and proof of insurance.  I rolled up on my supermoto race bike and had to show only Va. D.L.  I had a blast, it keeps riders from being stupid on the street, and they are begging for attendees.  One of the instructors was from the Keith Code school, and there were various other instructors that are local to MCBQ.

Events run about 1 per month through the majority of the riding season.

I'm not going to make it.  I'm pissed.  I have a meeting tomorrow that I can't get out of.

Another co-worker IS attending though.  He'll be a tall, lanky, black dude on a GSXR-750.  I can't remember what color it is, but he's got kind of a strange helmet.  His name's Dre.

You don't know how displeased I am that I can't make it.  I'm going to have to sign on for another session.  >:(

Your friend didn't make it either...  was H O T.  We got 3 sessions in and they called it due to dangerous heat.  So we drank beer and gave the staff seat time on the supermotos.

All in all, a fun time.

FREE Advanced Cornering Clinic on 8-25 and 8-26.  Sportbikes (and C14s) on 8-25...  cruisers and "other" bikes on 8-26.

I'll be there on 8-25.

Just to stoke the fire, there was a gentleman there last month on a FJR...  just sayin'.

As much as I'd like to, I don't think it's in the cards for this year.  Quantico is about a 10 hour ride for me from NH.  The course being on Thursday means 3 days vacation.    Dang it, why can't I be independently wealthy!

Seriously, for a vacation or that distance, I'd go do a full-on track day.  You got Loudon near you, don't you ???  Like to do some exploring in NH.

UPDATE!!!!

Chris "teach" McNeil will be the guest instructor on 8-25 at Quantico. You may remember him from stunting BMWs.  He's a pro rider, has a ton of YouTube video content, and is a very talented rider.

If you can make this one, MAKE IT !!!!

Be jealous... I'll be there.

Loudon is about 2 hours away, by the most direct route.   We have lots of good back roads to explore.  The only problem is the local police don't have much to do, so traffic enforcement is high on their list of "to-do's".   Got stopped for doing 48 in a 30 zone, but just received a verbal warning.   I swear the gray hair on my head definitely helped.

If you want to make a trip up, let me know.   We normally have a guest room available , or can throw a rollout bed in the wife's sewing room.

See you at the next one.

That's a nice run, Barry.  I've done it twice.   Although I think you're going to miss the best part of the BRP.  The 100 miles from there to Asheville is, in my opinion, the nicest part.  I'm jealous!

Hey, are they still doing Supermoto races at the Go-kart track in Chantilly?

Oh... I'm VERY familiar with BRP from Boone to Asheville.  We may very well hit all of that while we are there.  Although within 20 miles of Boone/Blowing Rock is crazy good riding.

Supermoto starts in October IIRC at AllSports GP in Sterling.  www.supermotojunkie.com (http://www.supermotojunkie.com) has the full schedule.  You should come out and spectate.  You can give it a try on the TTR if you want.  Crazy good fun.

Sweet.  I'll have to head there after work to watch a race or two.  I'm looking for a super-cheap street-legal supermoto to tide me over until I can figure out what I'm going to do about a bigger bike.

A stock TTR is $750 - 1000, a pimped out setup for indoors with BBR150 kit, suspension is $1200 - 1600.

You have no idea how fun running indoors is.  LOTS of contact, very aggressive.  The guys on CRF-150Rs are hitting about 52mph on the back straight.  It is ridiculous good fun.

Pretty much anyone can sign up.  It is supposed to be only those that are in, retired, or are currently doing (support/contract) something for the military.  It is a great course.  Its about as close to a track day that you can get without actually being a track day.  The instructor are great!  Maybe Barry will elaborate.

Give yourself enough time to get there.  It is about 20-25 minutes off of I-95.  Its a real pretty ride on base getting to the location.  It's about 16 miles of driving once you're on base.

P.S. - looks like upper 70s, perfect for riding.

Have a picture ID handy (and of course you should be wearing all the appropriate riding gear) and tell them you're taking a riding course at Camp Upshur and they'll let you in.  Bring the print out just incase.  Make sure you bring some food and drink for the day.

Barry, you missed a good one!  They changed the course to have a lot more turns.  Glad you could make it Chris.  This was a very good class.  No one could catch the C-10, and I passed quite a few in my group.  The "experts" group didn't have to many "experts" in it I found out.

Did you do the Thursday event or Friday event?  It killed me not to make it.  I heard the course was way more fun.

I was supposed to be on BRP in NC with 2 buddies on a bike trip.  Got sick, didn't go.  SUUUUCKS.  You got pics Frank?

I went to the Thursday class and Chris Caffeinated) was there also on his C-14.  Another co-worker of mine went on Friday with his H-D.  I hope they continue this class next year.  The course was a little slower because it had a lot more turns - we even ran it the opposite direction for the 2nd half of the day.

From what they told us at the briefing,  they are hoping to continue this next year and years after that.  The advanced cornering clinic has to go thru funding approval each year.  Do a search for "Semper Ride" it should show you where that program has been this past year.  Semper Ride kind of travels around the US, whereas the clinic repeats at the same locations.  The Quantico classes are no longer listed on the MCBQ site because the season is over.  I guess we just have to keep our eyes and ears open.

Did any of you get contacts at the Training? (Contacts that you (or I) could call and ask about other sites.
I will continue to look in Google, but so far no luck.
NOTE: (From memory) On the Semper Ride Site the last date was in Sept.
One of the Rides in August was at Belle Chase in Lousiana. That would be close enough to me to have attended, but it was a Track Day.
Which would be cool....
But, the Advanced Cornering Training sounds like a better choice. (If I were to have a choice).

Maybe next year more will be available....

I see that there are two classes- Sport Bike on the 26th and Non-Sport bike on the 27th.  Any idea if there is a decided advantage of one over the other given we are on C14's?

If you are "comfortable" on your bike, I would say take the sportbike class.  Each day the class is divided into beginner, amateur, and advanced groups.  You can specify which one you would like to start in and move to another if you feel the need.  The non-sportbike day is the more of the "cruisers" (HDs, Vulcans, etc.) and may be frustrating for you because you have the potential to take the corners (and straits) faster and someone may always be in front of you with you riding their butt trying to get around them.  You're not learning that way.

From talking to others in the class (and seeing what they are riding), if you have any skill at all, you probably want the sport bike day.  There are even guys with KLRs an V-Stroms that come on this day.

Thanks for the insights.  I just spoke with Ed Billig, at USMC.  GREAT guy.  Once I told him I was riding a C14 he strongly suggested I opt for the Sport Bike class.

Since I will be traveling down from NJ, if there is anyone from the NJ/PA/NY area or points further north interested in meeting up to travel together, let me know.  For those of you in the Quantico area, do you have any suggestions on a hotel?  It's been YEARS since the govt paid my way to go down to either Quantico or the Academy.  At the time, it was mandatory for me to stay in the BOQ.  I have some rather nightmarish memories of the Quantico BOQ!

Look up your choice of hotel brands in zip code Dumfries area (22025) with a Dumfries Road or Old Stage Road address, these are pretty clean and reasonable.  They would be a little on the north side of MCB Quantico.  The other area would be Aquia Harbor / Garrisonville that are a little south.  They would have a Jefferson Davis Hwy (US 1) or maybe a Garrisonville Road address and a zip of 22554 or 22556.  There is a hotel out front of the main gate but it was still old and worn down last I checked.  The gate to get to Camp Upshur is one exit south from here.  Be advised that it almost takes half an hour to get to Camp Upshur after you come off of I-95 at exit 148 (its way back in there).  There are no services at this exit either (i.e. food or gas).

Edit:  Don't get me wrong, there are some cheap hotels in this area.  I don't know if I would leave my bike outside of one over night though.

Last year I learned of it too late...

Thanks, Ya'll enjoy!

Just a reminder that this event is coming up soon!  Check your area for similar events.

For those that are here for the first time, don't forget that the location takes almost 25 minutes after you exit I-95.  Its back in the far corner of the base and there is a lot of morning traffic after you exit.

Can we get a head-count on who all is going to attend this?  According to the course web-site they have all 50 slots filled.  I know I have one of them.   I'm arriving sometime Wed afternoon.  Staying at the TownePlace Suites.  If anyone wants to meet for dinner let me know.

I'm going, although the weather doesn't look too promising.  '87 Wineberry with a black shorty windshield and a new rear tire with just about 20 miles on it so far.  I just did them this past weekend.  hopefully I can add a few miles before then to cook the tire in.

The June 28th class is listed already.  Did I miss the sign up for a May one?

May registration closed a couple of weeks ago.  Registration was hovering around 30 of 50 for a while through March.  I didn't check it for about two weeks and when I did, it showed 50/50 with 1 on Stand-by.  I see the June class already has 13 or 50 slots filled.

Rained out today.  Sucked for Armyguns because he came all the way from Jersey.  Nice to meet you by the way.  For the others, they told us if we come back tomorrow, they will fit us in (because it never really fills up)!  Come on local guys - they said just show up and you can ride!

You might even get to see someone drop a HD!

Made it back safely, despite rain pretty much the entire way home.  The rain was more of a nusance than a hazard.  568 miles round trip.  That was by far the most expensive FREE riding class I didn't get the chance to take!  Two days off from work (without pay), $53.13 in gas,  $96.80 for a hotel, about $45 in food and I don't know how much in tolls since I used my EZPass.  I can't afford to attend too many of these, especially if they get cancelled like this one did!  ;D

On the bright side- I got a great opportunity to try out the Russell Day Long seat which just came in last week.  Two 250+ mile days back to back and I can say for certain the seat is awesome.  Doubling that mileage would not have been a problem with anything related to sitting.  I'll post a review in the appropriate place.  Another plus was getting to meet RFH87_Connie.  Nice talking with you!  I will send the LED write-up to you as promised.

Hi - sorry about the drive.  I provided very specific feedback to both Ed (decider of the cancellation) when he stopped by, another instructor, and via feedback form.

I strongly suggested that since people are losing pay/leave, or have other travel expenses to attend the ACC, in the interest of customer service, they need a PLAN B.  What do we do if/when the ACC is cancelled?  I expect to do SOMETHING for 5-8 hours.  Theory, classroom instruction, conversation on riding and skills.  The problem is we all have a day blocked off, they cancell the ACC and they are already at work.

Hopefully they take note of this. It's a good resource, but when the riding aspect of the class is affected by heat/rain, it seems everything just stops... that is not acceptable, IMHO.

Man it was a hot day for class yesterday!  Just about 99 degree air temp, high humidity too.  The course this time was very technical.  I mananaged to maybe get up to around 50 to 55 mph.  It was many more turns and less straights this time.  I did a lot of tire sliding and hard front braking - no real scares though.  Connie suffers from a skinny front tire (early model) a lot on this type of course.  When I got home I was worn out.  Here's a pic of my front tire.

Edit:  I have a pretty new Avon Venom on the back (both tires are radials), it very well with no major wear.
